2018 Monthly Building Contest - October: Monsters!

edited October 2018 in Building and Techniques

Tada it's October!

And time for another Monthly Building contest. My fourth one so had to think a bit myself. It's getting a bit darker and colder out here (and warmer for you lucky people on the other side of the earth) but I'm guessing Halloween has spread a bit everywhere. So I want to see Monsters. They have to look organic (not like a mech) atlhough I will allow grey ball joints seeing as Lego only makes them in that colour. They can be cooky, wacky, scary, strange, whatever you like. You can make a Lego representation of an existing monster or make your own creation.

Size does not matter for this competition.

Don't be shy in sharing, even if it's your first MOC, this contest is here for fun and to get those creative juices flowing. Also, if your kids want to take part and make one for themselves, feel free to post those too, always great to see what they come up with.

The Rules:

- your model must be built for the contest, not an existing MOC

- organic monsters only

- two photographs per entry only - it helps the thread load better/at all! However feel free to upload any extra images to Flickr etc. that aren't for your entry.

- you can enter as many different models as you like so long as you make a separate post for each

- contest runs till October 31st. I'll announce the winner by November 4th.

The Prize:

That is a surprise, I'll try to find you something cool.

Any questions? Anything dubious? PM or leave a message below.

I look very much forward to see what you all come up with.

-- Does it look fun to come up with an idea yourself? Volunteers can speak up here.

This is an example of a cool monster I like - from TLBM :)

    Are digital models allowed?

@truck730 I appreciate your effort, but would like to see more organic 'alive' looking monsters. Although I guess nothing says a monster truck can't come to live off course.

^I was hoping someone would say that... I've got a couple of entries built that I need to get round to photographing...and one is bound to be popular on that front

As discussed in the general thread about These monthly buildings, the contests run 2 months. So you've got until the end of November.

Can @[email protected] , @[email protected] or @[email protected] change the title to reflect this?

Kept putting off photographing this, but finally got around to it.

Got it one more in the final stages, so hopefully I’ll finish it in time.

^ Nice truck, but I'm not sure that this would qualify as an "organic" monster?

I had intended to create a moving skull akin to the one in #2506, but I realized early on I wouldn’t be able to incorporate such a feature.

Not quite monstrous, but he's green, he has a knife and an apron. He's a butcher! And probably an ogre.

Had a bit of time to do some builds, working towards festive but I think these could count as cute monsters...

    Thanks for hosting @snowhitie!

I kind of ran out of time, wasn't quite happy as I was originally going for something else... but decided to take the photos all the same. I now think this is more like a weird baby T-rex than a monster anyway. I mainly used parts from #70904 Clayface Splat Attack, because initially I thought I'd like to try to build exclusively from one set.

Okay, you have now waited long enough I think. It was a difficult choice as the monsters were very different.

The lair and the not organic monsters I am going to exclude, it was nice to see them but they did not fit the brief.

Really liked seeing some parts being used for something else, like the sausages for lips from Cyril (by Mr_Cross ) and the snake-tongue (by @bumblepants).  His woodland creature was the most scary in my opnion. I liked the builds from @Mafon, especialy his last mixel-like one.

I really liked complicated builds of the rainbowmonster (@theoriginalsimonb), the pygmy cyclops and the trex baby and all were contenders for the top spot. But I got to give my prize this time to @Shib. His monsters weren't the most intricate builds, but almost all had a lot of charachter and they not only came with backstory and even rhymes. All of them made me smile and my son loved them all too.

So congratulations @Shib, I'll be checking out your wanted list and sending you a little something.

Thanks all for playing and go and check out December/January now live here

    @snowhitie Cyril wasn't @Mr_Cross's entry...
I know, my browser kept refreshing with adding the shoutouts and cutting out bits of the sentences. I thought I'd fixed it all but it didn't.

Apologies, Cyril was indeed by your good self  @fowlerbricks and I was mentioning @Mr_Cross because of his use of a spiderweb for an eye. but it cut out that bit! I should have realised...

Well deserved @Shib, I enjoyed your monster builds too.

I realised I put up too many pics of mine, sorry...
Thanks for the kindwords about the spiderweb eyes though, I think that was the bit of mine I liked most.

I have terrible trouble with the editing window too, stuff jumping around, not selecting properly, I thought it was just me :-)
