Millenium Falcon #7965 vs #75105

JudgeChuckJudgeChuck UKMember Posts: 1,555
Hi all,

I'm weighing up the options for getting a Millenium Falcon at some point and wondered what other people thought of the relative merits of both sets.

My criteria are really to have an Ep 4 - 6 MilF, so am erring towards the earlier version, however it is significantly more expensive than the new one, of course.

If I did buy the newer one, I would look to modify it to be more like the original. Has anyone done this and what did you change, apart from the obvious dish?

One draw for the earlier version is to get an Ep 4 Leia,  and I am not interested in the Ep 7 characters at all. In the newer one's favour, it seems to be that the build is significantly superior to the old one, which pushes me more towards that, even more than getting the Leia minifig. I can always source Leia elsewhere, if need be.

Decisions, decisions...

What are people's thoughts on this?

Just to add, I have read the following discussion, which came out around the time of the release of #75105, which did provide some useful insight:

I'd say the two falcons are so similar, I wouldn't sweat the differences between them. Like you, I had zero interest in any of the newer minifigs so that would be the thing that would swing it one way or the other. The best things about the older one is Leia and Luke's grey helmet, but it could be cheaper just bricklinking them and going with the newer falcon. Of course, another Leia will be released at some point anyway. You probably can't say the same for sunburnt Qui Gon Jinn and the dude in the swimming cap or whatever those other forgettable characters are called.

I would Bricklink the Death Star Leia and get the Ep. VII Falcon, because the interior is way superior.

I believe they can be picked up for around the same price (second-hand atleast)

Thanks for the thoughts so far. I think I am leaning towards getting #75105 and modding it at the moment.

@Brainslugged Thanks for the thoughts. Nope, I'm not interested in the Kanji Club (Klub?) figs in the slightest either! ;-)

@J0rgen Getting the Death Star Leia sounds like a very good idea, thanks.

@Gruff666 Just looking at Bricklink prices, #7965 is around £200 BNIB, while #75105 is around £120 - 130. I do prefer new over used, if at all possible.

That's fair enough, lowest Brand New on eBay is £158 and eBay has 10% off today, so it may be the ideal time to get it

@JudgeChuck if you'd be getting #75105 and you can have slightly creased box I've got one which I probably won't build now as setting everything for the UCS one.

I'd imagine with the 20th anni coming up they'll likely have a classic MiLF coming out if you can wait.  If not, another vote for modding a #75105 to meet your criteria.

@Hanzo Hmmm, that's a good point. I think I'm going to have to sleep on this one. To be fair, I'm in no huge rush to decide one way or the other. Thanks for your input! :-)

Just to resurrect this thread with an update.

In the end, I decided to go with a #75105 Force Awakens MilF and mod it. I found an interesting video on YouTube of mods someone had made to their MilF, so I am using that as a basis for transforming my own:

I have already put in a BL order for all the parts they used and a few extra for changes that I wanted to make in addition (nothing too radical) and I have also added a Han and Leia from #75159 Death Star and already have an R2-D2, C3-PO, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Tatooine Luke from other sets.

The changes aren't major, just tidying up the inside and swapping a lot of the Dark Tan and Dark Bluish Grey plates and bricks for Light Bluish Grey. Oh, and the communication dish as well!

So, I finished the changes that I wanted to make. As I said earlier, nothing too major, but I think it tidies things up nicely and makes it look more how I want to see it:

The only criticism that I would have is that the changes he made to the 3 "roof panels", to close up some of the gaps does make them a little bit fragile, so I've had to add some bracing underneath, but that was a minor issue.

I'm just waiting for the Han and Leia figs to arrive and it'll be done!
