I'd like to build Bastion as the normal skin. Or maybe he'll be in a set that way.

The menacing minfigure in the window was unintentional, the odd thing is I have just opened it up and there isn't any figures in there and this isn't even the spooky fire house.

@SMC So what do you think now it's built? Having spent £22.50 plus postage are you pleased with it or underwhelmed?
  • SMCSMC UKMember Posts: 1,607
Good question, forgetting the price for a moment I like it more than I thought I would. I build mostly large sets and although its a lot bigger than a minifigure it kind of feels like you are building a nano version of a much larger robot. It makes good use of the smaller ball joints and the build is interesting. It has a lot of charm to it and looks good on display although I think it would look better as part of a collection of similar sizes brick built characters.

Saying this I wouldn't really recommend it, its a £15 set at most and although its an exclusive the only things that would stop you making your own are the 3 stickers. Also next year we are bound to get a bastion with the normal skin. I dont play overwatch but I did enjoy the animated short that was posted here and would have preferred normal bastion to start with.

Saying that I think this feels more like a sneak peak set and it did make me want more. Who knows which of the sets bastion will come in, this might be the cheapest way to get him. Also the colour scheme does look good and I'm a completist so I like to get in early on the one off sets just in case I end up liking the theme enough to pick them all up.

Overall I am very happy with it and it is more than the sum of its parts. Which is lucky because the sum of its parts are not worth £22.50 plus postage on their own!

I get the sense this build is way larger than its actual minifigure-scale size.  (I am interested to see how they scale-down for the 'regular' sets.)
  • SMCSMC UKMember Posts: 1,607
I think this is one of the problems with overwatch, all of the characters are different shapes and sizes. It will be hard for Lego to get it right.

Maybe it's an extra special flat box edition...
Stick it on ebay with "WOW [email protected]@K SUPER RARE BOX ERROR" in the title and I bet it'll sell for a mint...or just end up referenced in the rediculous ebay thread.

OK... wow! I’m in the proces of sending my box back and it only looks like this. It was packaged in a box which itself was undamaged, so it was packed already damaged. But seeing @SeanTheCollector’s box, mine looks almost pristine.

I sort of wonder whether the items  they're used to shipping have sturdier packaging... it feels almost like a misunderstanding between Lego's typical packaging design and Blizzard's online retail store. Which isn't an excuse, just a downside of Lego working with a retail partner that they don't have any previous experience with. Hopefully Blizzard can learn from this if they intend to continue carry the sets carried at regular retail next year.

Aside from shipping packaging, I've just received mine (no issues and no damage) but for a limited item appealing to "collectors" the box packaging is quite shoddy. It's just like a GWP or £7.99 Seasonal set. It would have been far nicer in a sturdier box such as a typical Ideas offering. Quite disappointing for the money I feel.

I'm curious if the brisk sales of the Bastion mini-build are any indicia if the video-gamer market is going to cross-over and buy these LEGO sets.

I'd also be curious to know if Overwatch sells other merchandise.  If they sell gobs of Funkos or whatever Overwatch fans would be buying up.
    Baby_Yoda said:
Yes, there are many Overwatch Pop! Vinyls and other similar products. As I far as I know, they're quite successful. The distinct appearance of each character certainly lends itself to the unusual style of Funko figures.
I think dontfeedthebrickster's comment on the front page story may have been right on the money… "Price per piece goes out the window when the target audience already spends money on non-physical purchases."

As far as the price goes, though, as I was commenting on The Brothers' Brick, I suspect it makes less sense to think of this as an unusually overpriced store exclusive set, and more to think of it as an unusually low priced convention exclusive. The current plan is for it to be sold at BlizzCon in addition to the current online availability, and set designer Woon Tze described it on the LEGO Ambassador Network blog as "the BlizzCon exclusive".

Incidentally, that blog entry also seems to suggest some degree of time crunch in terms of getting it out in time for BlizzCon… which may explain some of the aspects of the model that feel shoddier than people often associate with premium LEGO products, like the flimsy packaging and stickered decorations. Not that stickers are unheard of in premium products, but it's rare for as few as THREE new printed elements to be outside an individual set's budget, even for much more limited items than this one and ones designed as free giveaways that can't directly recoup their production costs.

I'm guessing a game mode where a team has to bring the truck from point A to B? and the gate would be a checkpoint?

don't think any of them is a must buy, guess they are really for overwatch fans. though the shuttle looks pretty interesting.

That's a nice group of sets.  I presume the Bastion is not minifigure scale?

I suppose nobody should be offended by the Widowmaker figure.  It is comparatively very tame from the source material.

(I'm still interested to see if this gets cited as not family-friendly.)

It’s interesting seeing these sets as I’m realising this is probably the LEGO franchise I know the least about.

looking at them purely as LEGO sets there isn’t much that I personally don’t interesting. Even the minifigures (normally my Achilles heel) just look quite dull for the most part. I can see me picking up the Tracer vs Windowmaker set mainly for the Tracer fig as I think that’s the only minifigure I’d have recognised as being an overwatch character and I like to have a bit of variety in my minifigures.

Im still hoping the theme does well so LEGO might look for other video game IPs to licence.

and on some level I still feel like LEGO moving into vide game IPs could be the main legacy of LEGO Dimensions.
  • Baby_YodaBaby_Yoda The world's backsideMember Posts: 1,135
These all look very clean and refined and the way they're designed and presented definitely gives me the impression that these are marketed more heavily towards Overwatch fans than Lego fans. I'm glad to see this as it might drive sales, or, at the very least, tell Lego whether such a strategy does drive sales so that they know for the future.
I'll definitely grab the smallest #75970 Tracer vs Widowmaker set since it's battle pack price and comes with the two figures I would probably want most of all. #75971 looks pretty weak although I appreciate the low price point. I hope #75972 isn't unreasonably priced in Australia since it looks to be very good value for money, although the actual builds are kind of uninteresting so I'll hold out on that one too. The D.Va/Reinhardt set #75973 is very attractive but the huge shoulders are kind of dorky. Bastion in #75974, on the other hand, is amazing, and depending on its local price I'll probably get it at some point. I couldn't help but laugh when I saw #75975 because we were joking that the launch tower would appear in a set, and it indeed has! $90USD separates it as one for the hardcore fans, though. Overall, I think this line hasn't quite met my expectations but it's still a great addition and I'm sure it'll grow on me.

I had a feeling that Bastion would stay the same size as the exclusive set but they made him even bigger!

Think all the sets look great, not an overwatch fan so wasn't expecting much until the leaks started. But I like the near future vibe.
  • stluxstlux LuxembourgMember Posts: 2,130
Similar to @Bumblepants I didn't think I would be interested in this theme. I thought it would be nice for people interested in Overwatch, but not for me.
Then we get pictures of these sets... And now I have #75972 Dorado Showdown, #75973 D.Va & Reinhardt, #75974 Bastion and #75975 Watchpoint: Gibraltar on my wanted list...

Sweet mechs and sets that can be modded in my city. Good job TLG!

I really really like Reinhardt and the big Bastion. So awesome! It looks like Lego has done a fairly good job keeping the not-kid-friendly stuff down. I was worried that Mercy would be along the lines of Widowmaker, as her outfit is basically a second skin. But it looks like they've done a good job.

l don't like how the best waifu character is in the most expensive set.
  • AanchirAanchir United StatesMember Posts: 2,771
I suspect that Bastion and Reinhardt were scaled up so D.va’s meka could fit a minifigure comfortably without towering over all the other heroes, even those that are similar sizes in the actual game. Same as how the Hulkbustee tends to be out-of-scale with minifigures.

@SumoLego, you're not the only one and because of that I also have no interest in these as a theme, or the backstory or the characters. However, I really do like the look of the sets on the whole.
There are some really nice parts that have gone into these, especially in the shuttle set.

Like @stlux these have now been added to my wants list and look forward to seeing the real thing.

The Hanzo and Genji one definitely is. A lot of the others seem more gameplay based (at least, judging from comments I've read elsewhere, since I haven't played the game to see for myself). But some of the shorts do give you at least a bit more context about the characters and some of the settings depicted, if not the particular scenarios.

Nothing wrong with not knowing about a theme before LEGO gets their hands on the license… I mean, I was barely aware of Avatar: The Last Airbender before LEGO got the license in 2006, and that was actually AIMED at my generation (and later wound up becoming one of my favorite shows, despite me having had little interest in it when the sets were available)!

I doubt I'd know much about Overwatch either if I didn't see so much stuff about it shared by friends around my age on social media — not only do I barely play video games myself these days, but it's neither the type of video game I ever enjoyed playing, nor is it on Nintendo systems which tend to be the only ones my twin brother and I have owned. I've tried playing competitive fighting and shooting games with friends before and I'm just not very good at games that require those kind of fast reflexes.

That said, it has been a little bewildering to me that many Bricksetters who've never heard of this before haven't been curious enough about it to even ask other AFOLs who are fans what the characters are supposed to be, let alone to look them up on Wikipedia! Maybe that impulse to try and clear up unfamiliar or confusing stuff online is also something younger people are more into? Here's a Wikipedia link if anyone wants to give it a skim (some of the characters also have their own more in-depth articles): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_of_Overwatch

For me it’s more that if I waned to learn about it I’d be more likely to look at picking up a copy of the game cheap, but given that I’m lead to believe that it requires playing online (and therein paying a subscription to an online service) it kills any interest for me. I could read up on it, but aside from  the LEGO sets I’m unlikely to ever use that information...and my head is already full of pointless trivia I barely use :-P

I haven't played a video game since Tomb Raider 3 iirc... I have no interest in reigniting the timewasting joys of that particular money pit, even if I did have the time.

However, these sets have some really nice qualities and there are definitely parts I would like from them. I can't see myself investing in the whole theme, but when funds and/or deals allow, I'll definitely get a couple of these sets.

I do like a couple of these sets (Tracer vs. Widowmaker, Watchpoint: Gilbraltar, the Blizzcon exclusive Omnic Bastion), but overall I can't help but think these remind me more of Megabloks than Lego.
Some of the designs feel quite basic, like not a lot of thought was put into them. The box art just looks incredibly CGI.
On the otherhand, that rocket in Watchpoint: Gilbraltar is gorgeous.

Well. These are all very interesting. I've been quietly looking at this since I first heard about the Overwatch licence back in August. My youngest is a big fan of the game, despite not being able to play it at home (we only have a 360 - it stops him asking for all the new releases). I'm sure he will love those sets - his favourite is Genji.

For myself, I'm a big fan of mechs, so despite the lack of leg articulation I'll be getting the D.Va & Reinhardt and Bastion sets, and also Watchpoint: Gibraltar (because spaceship). I might get the little Tracer & Widowmaker set too as it's a mini-spaceship (or something) and because Tracer is both a Brit (allegedly, despite the in-game voice acting) and is on the cover of everything.

As far as sexuality is concerned, they all look like minifigs to me. Blizzard has been quite good in the past about acknowledging when a pose was overly suggestive and then changed it, and they have taken action against prolific rule 34 stuff. I don't think anyone should be offended by a couple of curved lines drawn on a minifig torso, but I know that there will be, inevitably.

@SMC - thank you for posting the images for Omnic Bastion, and the parts list. :-)

On the topic of the Bastion set, I can't quite fathom why it mentions batteries on the box. Is there a light brick or a motorised function? All the more fun, I suppose.

From this I think it's a light brick in the head - if it had motors it would almost certainly have some sort of power function branding on the box.
