Seems more like a facade than a building.  I think I might put some white tile pieces on my Fire Brigade and make it my Winter Fire Station.

A fire station would not be made out of wood if brick is available. That being said, again I think there were many other ideas that could have been made instead of failing back on a fire station as an idea. It is like they filled a hat with ideas on slips of paper, but also added 50 extra 'Fire Station' slips of paper.

I wonder if the tree is *meant* to be an artificial one? After all, the Fire Department has every reason to encourage the use of fire-resistant holiday decorations.

I also think if they'd used the bricks that add extra width to the building to give it extra depth instead I'd have been happier with the building. I may try that out for myself, and perhaps experiment with a different roof as well. Even though it's quite different from @mouseketeer 's design, I like the general idea; it's the details (and the feeling of being skimped) that make me less than enthusiastic about the set.

The fire engine is very similar to some of the other WV trucks, so I'm quite happy with that. And I certainly won't object to a "Dalmatian," even if the actual piece looks a lot more like a harlequin Great Dane!

Lovely little set. The problem is when I look at the price, and the little is screaming louder than the lovely at the moment.

The new fireman torso is really nice.

^ Yeah surprised this hasn't been mentioned before. The new firefighters look really good would like a few more to add to my Fire Brigade. Would love a little give away to go with this set like they used to do with a couple more firefighters in.

Hopefully they will appear on replacement parts.

I think they've done a really nice job:
    1) it's gender neutral
    2) no unnecessary yellow skin showing, so can be used with fleshies
    3) no annoying print that continues onto the legs
    4) insignia free (no big fire badge), so can be used for other things (such as soldiers here).

It would have been even better if they had not put the belt on it.

    :-)

The belt could have gone on the minifigure hips or been left off completely. Sometimes less detail makes things much more usable. Still, this isn't bad and isn't like that little yellow bit of flesh, the JCF badge and the 1337 badges on the collar of the police constable.

I mean fire stations are great and all, but I am really excited for the 2019 Winter Village Police Station

While OK, I agree with others that it seems more "City" than fitting in to our quaint little village at Christmas/Holiday time theme that the Winter Village is.

The fire truck leaves a lot to be desired too.

A larger version of something more like this would fit in better IMO:

^Personally I think the building on that one is pretty dull, and those vehicles are far more City.

I really can't see the problem with the set, other than it's price but I always expect that with the WV sets as they aren't always as easy to garuntee a discount as other sets, so the RRP always weighs a little heavier than on other themes.

I agree. The vehicles are very city like - I prefer the old style truck in the official set. It isn't as nice as the larger one in 10197 but then it uses fewer parts.

It is a shame they didn't do the big doors in dark red, but again I prefer the official building.

I'm only talking about the building...not the vehicles.

Agree that one is somewhat dull but they could spice it up. Just think they could've easily kept it more in the wooden village motif with different shades of brown and bricks like everything else they've released.

Be interesting to see how it looks with the rest of the town.

I'll start again by saying that I'm easy to please with these sets.

My first gut reaction was that I love this set! After taking time to more closely examine photos and the few videos that are out there, I have to say that I love it even more!

There is something about the overall aesthetic that I really enjoy about this one. Although I understand and can appreciate the concerns others have voiced about how it may feel out of place, I believe it will be a great addition to the traditional buildings we've already received in this series.

I really enjoy the color scheme, general building layout and facade, minifigs, and ice rink. I do also like the general look of the truck. I had planned on building out a few additional vehicles for my village anyway, so may look to add a second, more robust truck to the brigade.

After seeing the full tree, I don't hate it as much as I thought I would. Is it fantastic? No. Is it terrible? No. At least in my opinion anyway. It certainly won't have a prominent spot in my layout, but I'll still include it.

My two biggest issues (which are relatively small) are the stupid blue cart thing and the snowman. No words really for either.

I do also have to say that I find it a bit odd that the depth of the building isn't sufficient to support the length of the truck. I realize the amount of bricks that would have had to have been added to fit the whole truck would have likely been unrealistic. But still, it stands out as slightly odd. The redeeming factor here is that my village is set up so this detail likely won't really be seen all that clearly.

Last year I took the time to modify the Train Station to include more seating area inside as well as to expand the platform out further. I don't plan on making a lot of modifications to this one, but do think I'll likely put a detailed "bell tower" on top of the right tower portion of the building, similar to Mouseketeer's set. The single little 1x1 cone "bell" just doesn't do it for me. I think I could piece together something with parts I have on hand that would help that feel even more complete. I'll probably dress up the flat portion of the roof as well to bring it a little more to life.

All in all, I'm a fan of this one. I can see the concerns others have expressed. I also share the feeling that Lego could have done so many other great buildings. I trust that they will come in the future. But I'll be excited to pick this one up. I feel there is a decent chance it will be one of the October x2 VIP point sets. I'll likely end up waiting until November/December to see what GWP there ends up being.

I'll get it! (My dad was a firefighter - we got to ride the truck with Santa) The orange cone has to go, my snowmen all use the carrot and that looks a lot better. I can keep adding to the other WV ice rink, love the statue, the pole, the baby, the facade..... Next year: a WV Inn. Please!

I like it, though I will like it better when I can source enough bricks to make it big enough to fit the entire engine in the bay.

If the carrot piece didn't exist, the orange cone would be okay. However...

It seems a little weird how they used the headlight bricks to provide connection points on the opposite side of the walls where you can see the holes(like under the black stairs). I think I’ll try changing those out for regular 1x1 bricks with a side stud.
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,712
not sure that will make me start a WV collection, the building is ok, but the tree and truck are a bit poor. maybe I'll get the station (with the hogwarts express)
  • BrainsluggedBrainslugged Member Posts: 2,278
I prefer the building @grizzy posted. It would fit in with the rest of the WV buildings much better. Really not a fan of the new one. Might be my first WV pass. My completionist OCD might say otherwise though. A great Xmas freebie would make me hate myself less.

Sorry for the newbie question but I was just wondering will the train and station also be available again this Christmas? We'd just started collecting at Christmas last year and I fear we may have missed the boat (or train!) on that one.

Oh and just a heads up I've had an e-mail to say the Fire Station is available to VIPs now. I have £50 in credit to spend... argh the temptation.

Funny that - I checked yesterday and they still weren't up, and just now I saw that they are! I suppose Lego's festive season begins 13/9?
  • LegolisLegolis Member Posts: 248
I guess they put them up with the Fire Station.

I want the new set but I suspect the sensible buy is the train. I'll just have to hope I come in to some more money before the Christmas season is over (lets be honest, when Christmas starts in September there should be plenty of opportunity!). Can anyone point me in the direction of how to motorize it and roughly what that would cost please? We've not used power functions at all yet but I think they kids would love it.
  • Baby_YodaBaby_Yoda Member Posts: 1,295
There are instructions on how to motorise it and which sets should be purchased to do so in the box. If you'd prefer to use the new system, though, you could get #60197 and do a little switcheroo. I'm not sure if all the sets recommended for motorisation on the box are even still available.

The instructions to motorize it are in the set instructions, but I think it looks pretty poor with the wires from the tender to the engine, plus you can't fit the driver in once done. I put everything in the tender, so it pushes the locomotive. Works fine and looks much better. Happy to send some photos if you like. You have to extend the tender very slightly, but it's simple to do.
    You need:
    • 8879 IR Speed Remote Control
    • 8884 IR Receiver
    • 88000 AAA Battery Box
    • 88002 Train Motor
These are around £45 at full RRP, but you should be able to pick some up at a discount or used.
I picked up #60051 very cheap and used the PF elements from that, selling off the spare pieces which paid for the PF bits anyway, though it doesn't seem to be cheap anywhere just now.
The Winter Train was significantly cheaper in Lego Store's sale just after Christmas last year - picked up a further 2 sets for just over £40 each, but guess you need to balance that against availability as it's been out a while now. I actually thought it had retired, but guess it's come out for a final go.

  • Baby_YodaBaby_Yoda Member Posts: 1,295
^ That'd be devastating if it retired! It hasn't even been out for two years yet, and it's only available for a few months at once.

    @Legolis
If you don't want to splash out for the new system, the bits required for controlled power functions with the old system are...

    #88000 - Battery Box £11.99
    #8884 - IR Receiver £11.50
    #88002 - Train Motor £11.99
    #8879 - IR Remote Control £10.99.

Currently they are all available from S@H but how long for now the new system is out is anyone's guess.

It's well worth doing, it really brings the Christmas train and Winter display alive. :)

  • NickF22NickF22 Member Posts: 489
I used the rechargeable battery box #8878 - yes it's more expensive, and you also need the Transformer #8887, but it has a built in speed control, so you don't need the IR receiver. And you save on batteries. (You just have to be able to catch the train when you want to stop it!)
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,270
WV sets are normally only available for two years - the year of release and the following year. I guess they decided to make the train available again this year because it goes with the station.

That's what I assumed, especially with the heavy discounting after Christmas. Must be the station like you say. They might only have limited quantities left I suppose.

That's not necessarily true.  Sometimes they are available for longer - but are intermittently on the S@H.  My local LEGO Retail Store still has the Toy Shop Reissue on the shelves.

Happy too. Just need to check if I still have the photos anywhere. If not it will need a trip into the loft and try to dig it out of my Winter Village boxes!
  • milambermilamber Member Posts: 637
It needs a visit to the loft. I'll have a look tomorrow if I remember
  • milambermilamber Member Posts: 637
Here are some photos of the modified tender now that I've finally got the Christmas Lego out of the loft. Really just a matter of making it a bit larger to fit in the battery pack and sensor, plus attaching the motorised wheels to the tender instead of the locomotive. You need to leave a small gap at the top rear in order that the remote works (you can just see the green light in the photo I think)

Anybody got any idea when we're likely to hear about the 2019 Winter Village set? Is it usually around August?

Also, I know there were some train MOC instructions for extra #10254 carriages for sale on eBay, I think by somebody called "Mouseketeer" - I cant seem to find them anymore, does anybody know where I could them?

*Edit* I found the Eurobricks post about the train carriages I mean: https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/142031-modmoc-expanding-the-10254-winter-holiday-train/
