I wonder if the tree is *meant* to be an artificial one? After all, the Fire Department has every reason to encourage the use of fire-resistant holiday decorations.
I also think if they'd used the bricks that add extra width to the building to give it extra depth instead I'd have been happier with the building. I may try that out for myself, and perhaps experiment with a different roof as well. Even though it's quite different from @mouseketeer 's design, I like the general idea; it's the details (and the feeling of being skimped) that make me less than enthusiastic about the set.
The fire engine is very similar to some of the other WV trucks, so I'm quite happy with that. And I certainly won't object to a "Dalmatian," even if the actual piece looks a lot more like a harlequin Great Dane!
I really can't see the problem with the set, other than it's price but I always expect that with the WV sets as they aren't always as easy to garuntee a discount as other sets, so the RRP always weighs a little heavier than on other themes.
My first gut reaction was that I love this set! After taking time to more closely examine photos and the few videos that are out there, I have to say that I love it even more!
There is something about the overall aesthetic that I really enjoy about this one. Although I understand and can appreciate the concerns others have voiced about how it may feel out of place, I believe it will be a great addition to the traditional buildings we've already received in this series.
I really enjoy the color scheme, general building layout and facade, minifigs, and ice rink. I do also like the general look of the truck. I had planned on building out a few additional vehicles for my village anyway, so may look to add a second, more robust truck to the brigade.
After seeing the full tree, I don't hate it as much as I thought I would. Is it fantastic? No. Is it terrible? No. At least in my opinion anyway. It certainly won't have a prominent spot in my layout, but I'll still include it.
My two biggest issues (which are relatively small) are the stupid blue cart thing and the snowman. No words really for either.
I do also have to say that I find it a bit odd that the depth of the building isn't sufficient to support the length of the truck. I realize the amount of bricks that would have had to have been added to fit the whole truck would have likely been unrealistic. But still, it stands out as slightly odd. The redeeming factor here is that my village is set up so this detail likely won't really be seen all that clearly.
Last year I took the time to modify the Train Station to include more seating area inside as well as to expand the platform out further. I don't plan on making a lot of modifications to this one, but do think I'll likely put a detailed "bell tower" on top of the right tower portion of the building, similar to Mouseketeer's set. The single little 1x1 cone "bell" just doesn't do it for me. I think I could piece together something with parts I have on hand that would help that feel even more complete. I'll probably dress up the flat portion of the roof as well to bring it a little more to life.
All in all, I'm a fan of this one. I can see the concerns others have expressed. I also share the feeling that Lego could have done so many other great buildings. I trust that they will come in the future. But I'll be excited to pick this one up. I feel there is a decent chance it will be one of the October x2 VIP point sets. I'll likely end up waiting until November/December to see what GWP there ends up being.
Oh and just a heads up I've had an e-mail to say the Fire Station is available to VIPs now. I have £50 in credit to spend... argh the temptation.
I want the new set but I suspect the sensible buy is the train. I'll just have to hope I come in to some more money before the Christmas season is over (lets be honest, when Christmas starts in September there should be plenty of opportunity!). Can anyone point me in the direction of how to motorize it and roughly what that would cost please? We've not used power functions at all yet but I think they kids would love it.
The Winter Train was significantly cheaper in Lego Store's sale just after Christmas last year - picked up a further 2 sets for just over £40 each, but guess you need to balance that against availability as it's been out a while now. I actually thought it had retired, but guess it's come out for a final go.
If you don't want to splash out for the new system, the bits required for controlled power functions with the old system are...
#88000 - Battery Box £11.99
#8884 - IR Receiver £11.50
#88002 - Train Motor £11.99
#8879 - IR Remote Control £10.99.
Currently they are all available from S@H but how long for now the new system is out is anyone's guess.
It's well worth doing, it really brings the Christmas train and Winter display alive. :)
Also, I know there were some train MOC instructions for extra #10254 carriages for sale on eBay, I think by somebody called "Mouseketeer" - I cant seem to find them anymore, does anybody know where I could them?
*Edit* I found the Eurobricks post about the train carriages I mean: https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/142031-modmoc-expanding-the-10254-winter-holiday-train/
i’ve got a bunch of his instructions and build them; very well done all!
