July-August Building Contest - Play!

As AFOL's we aren't always very interested in the play features of a set. However it is very important to kids, the main target audience of TLG.

So for this month's challenge: 

Get building on something that moves/shoots/does something interesting!
A simple example where I have added some gears so the girls can try to hit the flag: 



Every contest needs some rules, so here we go:
  • Your model must be built for the contest, not an existing MOC.
  • Show/describe how the play feature works.
  • No theme limitation, but keep the footprint to 32x32 studs max.
  • Two photographs per entry only to ensure the thread still loads. However feel free to upload any extra images to Flickr etc.
  • You can enter as many different models as you like so long as you make a separate post for each.
  • The contest runs from July 31 to August 31.


The prize: Something from my stash of polybags or GWP - an up to date wanted list makes things easier for me ;)

    Interesting challenge, something I don't have much experience with so good to think out of the box.

    Hmm...this one's gonna have to be a physical build since Stud.io isn't very good for action features.

    Won't stop us from trying though. (I do have an old motor and some gears lying around though, just have to think of something, trying to avoid digging into my complete sets)

    I do have a big idea (I've had for awhile) that I'm not sure how to do though. Basically a PF modular system based off of an XL motor hub and spokes (hot swappable jerker lines made of technic axles) that go out to and crank different  things. If a line jams, it just pulls off at it's connector.

    It's gotten awfully quiet around here. I think it's time to liven things up, so here's my first entry: the Cocoa Pod Base! Nasty mobs bugging you?     @stlux and I discussed in the other thread to prolongue the date on this one, since it's holidays in lots of places so maybe less time to build. (or more if you are not travelling or brining your bricks with you).

    Edit: Nevermind. After looking through the album, I figured it out. 

    @TheOriginalSimonB Very thoroughly thought out with the two parts! Mine is also more in the vein of a playset-style entry. Now, to finish it at some point...

    Can I also post an LDD-build? I don't have all the necessary bricks to actually build my model (which isn't totally complete yet, so please tell me if I can post and therefore need to get a move on with my build...)

    @eMJeeNL Whilst it's nice to see creations "in the brick", there's nothing in the "rules" I posted against LDD creations, so go for it!

    ^Good point. Didn't even think about that. @stlux is there any rules against non-Lego rubberbands?

    As the same effect/something similar could have been achieved by a Lego rubber band (and possibly a different part use), I'm allowing @FowlerBricks's use of that non-Lego rubber band. At least it's not a Mega Bloks one!

    ^Ok, awesome! None of my Lego rubber bands were the right size/tautness for the amount of power I was aiming for.

    So I struggled with this, looks like I am better with shapes and houses than acutal moving things, but it was fun trying out stuff.
    Ended up building with only bricks from our play-pile for this play themed contest. And I build a play-ground with play -features :)
    My son helped me make a little video so you can see the roundyroundy (no idea what that's called, thats what my Brittish husband calls it), the trap door that lets you fall down on a thick matrress beneath, the musical buttons on top of the slide (not technically a play feature since you have to make the music with your mouth), a slide, a climbing rope and stairs.

    I liked the "weeeeeeeeeeh", "waaaaaaaaah" and "wooooooooh"; sounds like he had fun demonstrating the play features of your playground :)

    It took a few sleepless nights, but I finally finished my last and largest entry. I had planned on making more in the back but ran out of time.

    @BillyBricks84 great entry and video 'which great set doesn't have a helipad? and then you take one of your 300 helicopters or anything that flies' and yes there's Gandalf. Very good.

    My son gasped when the robber came 'crawling' out with your clever mechanism.

    Lots of great entries; will watch all the videos again this week and then decide on a winner!

    *drum roll*

    Alright, as the theme of this competition was play, I enlisted the help of some kids to judge the entries. Their favorites were:
    1. @FowlerBricks Cocoa Pod Base was the biggest hit; they loved the launching of the projectiles.
    2. In second place was another of @FowlerBricks' entries: the net cannon. Because cannon. Seems there's a theme emerging, and why TLG adds stud shooters to everything.
    3. In 3rd place the kids nominated @snowhitie's playground. Lot of things to do.
    I was however also interested what the parents thought. They choose @BillyBricks84 's very clever bandit hideout as the winner in the "what most appeals to the adults" category!

    @FowlerBricks and @BillyBricks84 please PM me your address, so I can send you your prize!

    Congratulations to both winners, and thanks everybody for the great entries.

    Ugh. I knew I should have had a cannon that launched the thieves to their escape rather than an underground passageway.

    @FowlerBricks send me one of your cannons, I'll attach it to my mountain, and we can do what only Pixar movies and frosted Pop Tarts have done before: appease both children and adults with one item.
