Bonus Ball Drawing 3/10/18 SeijiAmasawa Part Deux

Q: Some threads on this forum are like siren songs luring unsuspecting bricksetters into themes/money pits they would not otherwise think twice about. Name one of these threads/themes so that we may each investigate it. Or if you are impervious to sirens, name a recent set you built where you learned a new technique.

A: Great ball contraptions in Building and Techniques – go look! I built the Captain Phasma brickheadz and I really liked how the helmet was created especially the eyes.

For anybody wondering how this works, well, it's simple. Answer the question and get a number based on your post in order between 1 and 59 for the UK national lottery bonus ball. If your number gets drawn on Saturday night, you win the prize. If you don't make the first 59 replies, well there's always next week to be a little quicker.

I’m not sure what the prize is yet but I can guarantee that it will be Lego-related.

Good luck!

I haven't fallen yet, but all this discussion about Speed Champions has been tempting me to investigate further.

Well, I didn't learn this building technique from a set, but I just figured out that this piece: https://brickset.com/sets/containing-part-4222113 can be attached upside down by the hole on the top.

Oh, it has to be http://bricksetforum.com/discussion/22975/collecting-certain-parts-only
It doesn't cover a theme as such, but instead inspires yet another aspect of LEGO collecting.

For me it was the Brickheadz discussion thread. At first I wasn't going to get any, then it was just Star Wars ones, and soon (if I'm not careful), it will be all of them!

Any thread in the Shopping UK sub-forum. As soon as I decide to go cold turkey and aim for a month, up comes a deal too good to say no to! So far, March has been successful. So far....

Mine wasn't actually a thread here (it was a BL forum post), but a similar thread does now exist here: monochrome minifigs. And realising I could make half a dozen from what I already had got me started on what I thought would be relatively easy and painless. It wasn't and still isn't.

The thread on collecting certain parts only is leading me to some dark, expensive places!!!

Have the agree that the Sausage thread always intrigues me.  Not sure I would consider it a money pit, but I do have this strange sensation that I must have multiple copies of the Hot Dog Cart polybags that are now popping up...

The leaks thread always entices me. I love getting little tidbits of new info about upcoming LEGO sets. The monthly contests are fun too.

Definitely the collecting certain parts only. It's a rabbit warren that i'm tying so hard not to fall down. However the collections look so neat, that I look longingly at my parts of varying colours and think I could do that. So far I have resisted, but if they guys and gals on the thread could post more about how expensive it is I would find it easier to steer away from the temptation. :D

Any thread can do it to be honest. I'll find myself innocently browsing a seemingly innocuous thread and someone happens to mention that they think a certain minifigure is cool or highlights a new piece or mentions a piece I haven't seen before and the next thing I know, I'm ordering it on Bricklink!
The new parts thread would be the worst for me, but as parts are usually being spotted in upcoming sets, I'm spared the immediate buying reflex by virtue of the unavailability of the piece in discussion.

    Thanks for hosting!

I enjoyed how they did the rear wing on #75877 Mercedes-AMG GT3.

It's such a little thing they do with it by attaching the droid arms to the back of the wing instead of the front, but it makes it look so much better than some of the other models.

Another one would be the steering mechanism in #42054 CLAAS XERION 5000 TRAC VC. Using a simple sliding mechanism to dictate the different steering modes is brilliant to me.

As for a thread, the Speed Champions thread seems to have gotten a few people interested in that theme.

Interesting question, look forward to see what gems people dig up. Thanks for hosting!

I think I want to point you to @bendybadger first ever bonanza (before he even named it that) which this generous person did in May 2015. He did them for a long time, and a month after the first one they were called bonus ball bonanza's and it's great to see we got volunteers to keep these going, even though bendy has been away from the forums awile. Genuinely lovely bloke and I hope he'll be back soon.

Regarding to techniques, I've just been building the #31024 Roaring Power creator set this week and I just love to see how you can make three totally different models out of the same set of bricks, it's what Lego (and this month's monthly build contest) is all about. Otherwise, I loved how the Saturn V came togheter, think that was one of the best things I've build.

What are you buying/building? threads, its interesting to see what everyone else is up to.

Having built the new City tractor this week, I love the use of wall double corner piece, stacked four high to make steps up the side.

    --- double post ---

Really sorry, I've misunderstood the question, thought it was 'interesting thread period' -but it's 'interesting threads that make you spend money'. Scuzi, I blame the brain fog.

The what are you building/Moc thread  usually has good inspiration to spend :)

Sorry about double posting, I know that makes the list-making harder so to make up for it, I'll make the list!

Massive ideas how to arranger your house: check!

That thread has cost me alot of money already. Not only on bricks but also on display cases etc... :-)

Being a forum junkie and reading most threads as they appear, I can't really say that any one thread should be read more than any other (but I do pick up a lot of stuff that I wouldn't have known otherwise).
As for building techniques, most sets I build manage to surprise or teach me something at some point or another but Technic sets always seem to blow me away with how they go together and function. I've yet to build one I haven't been fascinated by.

It's been a few years but I got sucked into the hype during the countdown of remaining stock of the Fire Brigade modular in the Predictions thread. Bought one and ended up loving it and have bought every modular since.

I spent too much money because of this thread: http://bricksetforum.com/discussion/26164/ucs-falcon-rumours-that-turned-out-to-be-true#latest

I might have waited until I could have gotten a discount, but the stupid black VIP card suckered me in.  And now its just utter disappointment.

I stuck fast to my initial decision of not getting into Speed Champions, mainly because I didn't like the blocky designs and massive amount of stickers and also because I didn't want to get sucked into another theme.  However, it was either the TRU deals or Speed Champions thread that showed a great deal on one of the 911 sets or the Raptor set.  That's when I gave in but not entirely... still haven't gotten many of the sets that I'm interested in and already missed some that went into retirement.  But I'm trying my best not to fall too deep into this rabbit hole!

Not LEGO related, but this thread http://bricksetforum.com/discussion/20050/what-are-you-reading-right-now has led me down quite a few rabbit holes. But anything big bang related draws me in for sure.

Was mentioned already, but the UCS Millenium Falcon thread got me to spend a dollar or two more than I was planning last year.

Was really hard for me not to get sucked into the hype leading up to the official reveal. I definitely would have bought it anyway, but due to the thread I was EXTRA stoked about it.

Nothing particularly exciting, but tend to lurk around the Marketplace thread... normally for browsing purposes, kindof like window shopping, but occasionally setting up a purchase / trade. Have dealt with some genuinely nice people! And, hey: more LEGO!

The "Dare I say Walmart" and "Target Deals" threads have sent me hunting for clearance deals that I otherwise probably would have missed, because I'll use brickseek to check a few more stores instead of just checking the closest ones once a week.

I told myself I was done with the CMF's: they are too expensive; I have too much Lego; I have no room; I want to cut back on expenditure on Lego purchases, etc. etc.
....... but then I took a look at the Series 18 CMF thread, and now I am contemplating how cool it would be to add all those awesome looking minifigs to my collection.
Must .... resist .... temptation .... do not give in to this urge ...... dooh!
Shut up, and take my money!     (probably)

Mine has been the "How do you display your minifigs?" thread.  I've bought a couple of the Ninjago Display boxes, and am considering one of the large shadow boxes I see on Amazon, etc.  I've even started just buying some minifigs instead of the sets themselves because of it.

Like others, the Speed Champions thread and also Brickheadz have drawn me in. Not going for superheroes but the Ninjago Brickheadz are just great and I’m now keeping pennies to one side for the Star Wars OT and Harry Potter ones.  And just built the GT40 which is now my favourite LEGO car of all time.

The UCS MF display thread keeps me coming back, i still need a solution for my own ship.

also New Ferrari Garage, this was more of a feature of new pieces, but there were several new connection methods on the cars thanks to new detailing pieces. (check the nose of the 488 in the set.
