Box Art Blunders

Hi all, I don’t know about you, but I’m always very interested in when Lego make a mistake in their promotional pictures for sets, whether it be incorrect building, wrong minifigs or anything else in between!

I noticed on the promo pic for #8896 Snake Canyon, the sticker on the front of the lime motorcycle is peeling off!

Feel free to share any you’ve noticed!

The set with Arctic Batman vs. Mr. Freeze comes to mind.  The word arctic was misspelled artic.

    #7623

The airplane wing supports are shown in white on the front and are actually grey.  I emailed customer support, complained and they sent me the white ones.  Always great CS!

One of the promo photos of the UCS TIE had a sticker that was catty-wompus. Made me laugh at the time.

Ever since I got the set 7626 for my birthday many many years ago I always noticed this binder clip on the exploding play feature that wasn't photoshopped out

Unfortunately I don't have the box and Google doesn't have any good images of the back of it so this is the best I could find

Not box art, but just noticed this gem on the stock images for #70316

I suspect someone used the wrong layer when saving the images.

383 has the filed down pony tail hair for the king (same as on the 675 box and probably also 361 but I couldn't find a decent pic)

They diy shock absorbers on 8860 (which was pretty cool as this was the way I made them back then before getting 8845 - we had no working pens left in the house, haha)

The official images for #75005 Rancor Pit have some very subtle blunders. Can you spot them?

If you enhance the edges with a little bit of photoshoppery, it becomes apparent that the base of the set has the feathered outlines of the minifigures on top of it:

Also, the two finger hinges are seen in blue in several sets (like 6844) but never actually made it into production in that colour

^Wow...How crazy is that....On the cover!

It's funny, I was thinking about this before seeing your post that after looking at this catalog , whoever put it together seemed to be just throwing it together.  They have a lot of coverage of the Ninjago city set, but never show all the minifigures.

Not necessarily box art, not necessarily a blunder but I was always amused that the box art for #6442 Stingray Explorer implied a highly scientific study of an elusive undersea giant.
However, closer examination of the official catalogue image reveals that these guys were just really, REALLY missing their lost hats!

    An oldie.... but doozie....

The 1956 introduced  (310/1310) LEGO Esso Service Station came in several box designs over the 10 years it was produced (1956-66).  And in the earliest box image it showed artwork instead of a photograph (the LEGO Photo Dept. wasn't opened until 1959).  And that artwork showed this box top design....

There was a hand painted red edge to the white plates along the roof line... but never to the  top side edge of the 1x bricks (including a macaroni) above that.

This error was "partly" corrected in 1959 when TLG came out with a new box design (with introduction of the new LEGO Photography Department)....

However... they still didn't get the instructions right... because the (inside box top) instructions showed the red painted plates line on the side of the building.  That line actually was only added (hand painted) to the front 2 sides of the plates (with the curve between)....

TLG finally got it all right with the 1960s version of the 310 Esso Station when the instructions were moved to the bottom of the lower box part... but this was correct only until 1963......

Both the 1960s box top and instructions on the bottom were once again incorrect from 1963-66.... when the labor intensive red lines were eliminated from the set, and the garage door was changed to red (white garage doors were retired in 1962).   The box top and bottom were never changed to reflect this parts change however...

    Here's the 1960-66 box top....

My LEGO collectors guide would only be half as big... were it not for these types of anomalies.... ;-)

Just noticed they left the 2x2 slope off the right front foot of the main model image of #70611 Water Strider. Left foot included for comparison:

^ Looks like they got it right for the new chess set #40174 but I can’t understand why it would matter. Maybe if I played chess more...or at all.

The resurrection of this thread is timely as I have noticed my Downtown Diner box omits the word ‘Expert’ from the top right had corner:

Examples I’ve seen elsewhere have ‘Expert’ printed. Does anyone else have this variation?

  • JRLJRL Member Posts: 86
Nope, otherwise complete and purchased direct from the Lego Store in Leicester Square, so I’m confident of its provenance. As you say, weird.

    ^ No, you are not.

^^ Isn't her hair in front of the rest of her neck, flowing over her left shoulder? Ah, but that would mean there is something wrong with the headphones, maybe. Oh well, could be worse - they could've made her head wider than her body. Hang on...

This is a stylized cartoon based on a mini-doll.  I wouldn't expect these to be studies in accurate anatomy or physiology.  DaVinci would not be impressed.
^Amazing she can breathe, let alone sing, with a neck less than two inches in diameter...
Since her head is balloon-sized, she doesn't actually need lungs or a diaphram to sing.  It's just air whistling between her teeth...

Reading the main page article about worst Star Wars sets and I noticed a rather large missing part on #8015:

It is missing in the box art as well.

^ Not sure what’s missing. On first impression, I thought the big gray 3x10x1 slope on the back was missing, but upon closer inspection it’s there.

@Astrobricks yeah I guess you are right. It is there. I thought that was an empty bracket at the front.

^^ & ^.  Having just had the speeder in my hands, I'm going to have to say you're both right!  the slope is missing from the right side of the speeder when looking at the front of the speeder, but it's definitely there when looking at the back.  Looks like it was digitally 'cleaned up'....
maybe we should have a poll or something?

#850486 (Rock Band Minifigure Accessory) in the main official photo has the drummer appearing to have a lime mohawk with pink sections. However, the mohawk is just purely lime.
