Based on Lego's response to the Sandcrawler, all LEGO exclusive Star Wars sets are to be considered UCS because of their complexity.

My understanding of this is that UCS now just means it has a different production run and limited availability compared to normal sets and only applies to 'adult' Star Wars sets.

If this is the logic, then UCS itself needs to be a subset of a bigger category.

I think it's clear that the complex builds available as D2C such as Helicarrier, The Simpsons House, Modulars etc etc... ARE equivalent to UCS.  Should they carry the UCS tag?  No, they aren't Star Wars.  Which is why a bigger umbrella tag is needed for these complex builds which would include UCS.

Unfortunately, that solution means BB-8 wouldn't fall under this classification.  Which is a shame and very odd.  BB-8 in my mind, should be UCS.  Take away the boxes and it clearly belongs with UCS style sets.  I would be very interested to know the reasons this set was deemed not an official UCS set but I suspect it's to do with production run and availability.  I can understand why people don't want to assign a tag to it that Lego themselves did not assign but I don't think anyone would argue that this set clearly SHOULD be a UCS.  To be clear though, it's not.

There you have your umbrella tag ... D2C.

It's not listed as UCS under the LEGO wiki

That’s no more authoritative a source than Brickset itself. They probably have had or are having this same debate there.

If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck it's a duck. If you put BB8 in a lineup with other UCS sets it wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb, so to me it is UCS, don't really care about official designations.

That is fine, but this isn't about people's individual collections. It is about an entry in a database. For individual collections, people can do whatever they like with them and call them whatever they like.

Some early UCS sets don't look like modern UCS sets, so using the same logic they could be excluded.

As usual I breezed over that detail in the original post.  Those older sets had the UCS label on the box right?  Labeled UCS is of course in, and sets made to look like UCS should also be in the db as such.

What does that mean though? Most small (~200 piece) minifig scale SW sets look like the UCS #10026, so should they be included? Some big sets from other themes look like the more recent big sets in the UCS range, so should they be included?

I think you're nitpicking, BB8 has a stand with a plaque and a holder for its minifig, sitting next to R2-D2 no one outside of folks here would know they weren't from the same lineage.

It does, but that doesn't mean it is UCS. BB8 looks perfectly fine next to R2-D2, no-one is denying that. For people outside, it doesn't matter how it is characterised in the database.

You could make a minor tag for "Display Piece" for things that are set up to be displayed. I'm thinking of the Planet Sets, which have a figure and ship on a stand with a planet orb. If it's a minor tag, you can find it without it being quite such an issue how liberal (or otherwise) you are being.

"Display piece" covers many and possibly all sets though, from CMFs to modulars. My kids display all their themed City sets (arctic is currently on display).

Well yeah, but when the accessories specifially orient towards display...
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
You might as well tag it with those accessories then, rather than something derived from the accessories. Having a tag "with plaque" is (almost) unambiguous, having a tag "display model" and basing that on the feeling that it is meant to be displayed because of what comes with it is not. For example, are the original modulars (lack of interior) display items, whereas the later ones play sets? Is Assault on Hoth a display set or a play set? etc.

Nowhere, LEGO has very little to do with the compilation of those magazines so I imagine the illustrator has simply combined a couple of assets for the image. It certainly doesn't constitute an 'official' announcement.

That having been said, I am very much open to the idea that LEGO may wish to retroactively brand #75187 BB-8 as a UCS set, in which case we will update the database accordingly.

To me it is primarily marketing.

With the BB-8 set TLG might have thought that they had a huge seller in hand that needed to be distributed widely to fully achieve its sales potential. And they just didn't want to dilute the UCS brand value.

Also, it is too cheap for the UCS brand which is used to help sell the most expensive sets to well-off customers.

#10026 Special Edition Naboo Starfighter was only $40 when it came out so price has nothing to do with it. There were also a few in the $100 range so BB-8 could fit, but since LEGO has yet to call it a UCS Set it is not.

    Good call. Certainly intriguing, though.

Just curious, what ever happened to the "plaque" tag idea? Seemed like a great one that admins were on board for but I don't see it implemented in the database. @TheBrickPal @CapnRex101 @Huw

So long as it is applied to all sets with a plaque, such as SW Planets.
