(also, apologies to my Santa , who was concerned it hadn’t arrived. It had, but I wasn’t there to know that...)
These are some intriguing packages. I can't feel any interior packaging - it feels like just the loose parts inside. Perhaps it's a MOC? Can't wait to open and find out what it is.
Aha! That's my Ergodox. It's a split ergonomic keyboard - I put it together using a kit I bought online. It uses a commonly-available 'Teensy' (arduino-like) microcontroller, a PCB and acrylic case designed by the online keyboard community* and individual switches like the ones found in any mechanical/gaming keyboard.
Basically as a history student I spend so much time typing that I was beginning to feel very uncomfortable on standard keyboards (like, why are keyboards arranged in straight rows? Human fingers aren't!). Likewise in general, spending 8+ hours per day (for work or pleasure) on a PC is difficult to avoid. So I invested in more ergonomic input devices with the hopeful return of postponing RSI, tennis elbow, etc.
The custom keyboard community is really weird and I don't really identify as a member as such - I just went in, got the ergonomic keyboard I was looking for and got out! Keycaps are another world - people will spend £100-200+ on just the caps for their boards, and the same again on individual hand-crafted 'artisan' caps. Hence why mine are mostly blank and pretty plain. (You can laugh, but people here spend the same on collecting kids' toys ;) )
The numpad on the left is also way more usable as the main bit of the keyboard is in the middle (compared to the screen) and your right hand doesn't have to do letters, numbers and mouse while your left just does letters. It was a little kit for testing different types of switches that also came with a little PCB I soldered up. The mouse is a Kensington Orbit trackball, which minimises elbow/shoulder/wrist movement. Really solid and only £20. I would definitely recommend it over the standard el-cheapo mice that twist your forearm round so your hand is horizontal. The split keyboard (which is propped up by a box in the middle) also allows more natural elbow/forearm resting positions.
It all sounds a bit bonkers, but when I think that (as an early 20s-year old) I probably have 40+ years of going to work and using a computer all day, it makes sense to try to start early with reducing wear and tear on my joints.
I realise I've gone massively off-topic, so here's a cool mechanical keyboard that uses the innards from a commercially available board with a Lego case and caps:

But now I'm wondering why you have a radio on your desk, when you're connected to the internet?! And if you liked your trip to New York? And what's that Lego MOC? And I like your sock.
Frankly, your answer has posed even more questions. :-) All of which are off topic and borderline intrusive, so I'll go get my coat... :-/
2. Yeah, it was good. Not there very long, though!
3. On the right on top of the Nintendo? That's actually the brilliant if somewhat surreal #4701 Sorting Hat
4. Err, thanks? All credit to Primarks...
Thank you @plasmodium - that's helped my OCD :-) I've never seen that HP set - how very odd. My son has socks from Primark like that. I feel very old. Maybe I'll get some for Christmas (bringing it slightly back on topic for a moment)!
And for my fortnightly update, I can confirm that my tree is up, and the SS gift is under it! Pictures to follow - it may include socks. I'm sure you all can't wait.
I was pretty bummed to hear that Peter Kay had to cancel all of his shows (I had tickets for Dublin), so coming home to this parcel was a lovely surprise!
Thank you secret Santa.
Well knock me down with a stud shooter, it turns out that the delivery guy was none other than Santa himself.
After a brief chat explaining my situation he agreed to help me out and deliver my gift to my recipient.
Of course this means it won't be delivered until Christmas eve but rest assured that my Santee will receive it ready for Christmas Day.
He also said he remembered that he had something for me which was a surprise but it turns out it's from my very own Brickset Secret Santa and they had sent it via the North Pole so the package couldn't be traced back to them.
Really looking forward to opening this up on the big day and a big thank you to whoever my Santa is.
Gotta go now as Mrs Claus has just baked a nice fresh batch of cookies and we are sitting down to a private screening of the new Star Wars film (Being Santa has got to have some perks). Will update when the pressie is opened. :)
Nice feel to the wrapping paper with the glitter snowflakes.
On the other side of things I've had my users gifts for awhile but haven't had time to wrap and send them off! Hopefully I'll get them out tomorrow... running out of time fast!!
~~~ BSSUBD17: END QUICK STATUS REPORT ~~~
PS Bricksetters are a crazy bunch with lame reindeer, hungy Santa's that eat their reindeer, whipped elves and other crazy stuff but you do make me laugh. Thanks for all being such a great group.
*not pictured- 6 bags of m&ms promptly eaten by family and friends upon package arrival.
my update today (I’m no longer trying to work out what the frequency is, something non-linear I imagine) is that it feels such a long time since I got my present, I almost forgot I received two! I also nearly lost them in the haste to get some other presents wrapped (non-Brickset I might add). And as far as getting a present for my intended recipient, I’m hoping to figure that out sometime this week. I’ve still got plenty of time, right? ;-)
Man, the self control around here.....
Also, due to a hiccup, my wantlist was under Muftak - not muftak1
Roll on the 25th!!
....thank you very much Secret Santa. Looks like some cool boxes to open on the big day.
I'm going mad. It wasn't @plasmodium's socks, it was @piratemania7. Anyway, my comment still stands about the socks, whoever they belong to. I still think that @plasmodium will have nice socks as well. I just have that feeling.
That's what happens when you post in the early hours of the morning because you can't sleep. At least I didn't bring duct tape into the commentary! :-)
Lots of great photos of presents here guys. I'm very impressed.
Anyway, lots of PM's done today since lots of parcels send and received, really looking forward to start opening mine!
The knitted thing to the left is supposed to be Santa. How he managed to carry that in I've no idea!
So I followed the instructions:
Thank you Brick Santa!
