Didn't like it at first but now I'm in, luckily these often go on sale so I can wait it out

^exactly the same feeling for me...

And for info, i've visited the moulds factory in Billund last week and i saw some dark grey tracks being produced...so it seems there will be another set to come with those tracks. Maybe a roller coaster in the future :-) Wait and see.

The Joker Manor coaster works as a rollercoaster with a bit of Technic power...

There has to be some part (isolation) placed between the gear chain and the track not to touch and scratch / rub off the track over time :)

Am curious what it is going to be in the official Creator Roller Coaster set when motorized :)

  • tomahawkertomahawker Member Posts: 207
Well done!  I assume the official motorized set will come with a guide or other part to keep the chain from rubbing against the track pieces.
  • DeMontesDeMontes Member Posts: 745
@tomahawker yeah the chain link would rub on the track over time clearly even though it is rounded.  I considered ways to prevent this but for a proof of concept post I just kept it all simple. Plus I'm no expert!

Slowing it down might help a bit. After all, the number of revolutions the pulley section is making doesn't affect the time taken for it to do the revolution of the track, just the initial climb. Slowing it (increasing the time for the climb) would cut down on a lot of the unnecessary abrasion during the free-fall part.

@CCC although the speed creates momentum no?  I only had a motor and battery pack so slowing it wasn't an option but intermittently running it perhaps by using a sensor to start the motor would be cool :-)

Nice video and post! I'm struggling to see an obvious way to keep the chain from rubbing on the track pieces though.

Are the circular cross-members the same width as a bar? I.e. can you attach clips to them? Even if you can, I'm still struggling to think of a way to easily do it. Unless Lego produce a couple more new pieces to enable that to happen.

Looks great! I was also thinking to slow it down, in reality you go up quite slowly compared to the descent, and it will reduce the chain wobble. But indeed, the question is, will you reach the beginning of the chain again?

In any case I'm dreading the release of a Creator Expert roller coaster. I obviously DO want one, but my city's fairground is full! I even didn't start on my MOC bumper cars because there's nowhere to put'em! (backup plan engaged! who needs road plates anyway!)

@Paperballparkyes they are bar diameter and clips would work. I was thinking that having another gear between the bars that is slightly raised to keep the chain off but still lower enough to only catch the extruding bar under the car may work??

A little, but the potential energy to kinetic energy as it rolls down the slope looks like it is dominant. It would be interesting to see if it still goes all the way around if just balanced at the top of the high point and given the smallest of nudges.

@sid3windr I have a couple more comical videos where its literally the vibrations from the chain link 'shake' that manage to propel the cars over the edge of the slope to continue on their downward journey haha

@CCC I can confirm that it does not. If you watch the first couple of seconds we demonstrate this.

So yes, you will need a little bit of velocity at the top of the hill. Or some silicon spray to reduce the friction.
  • DeMontesDeMontes Member Posts: 745
or all the minifigures jump out before the ascent ;-)

Yes I was thinking something similar, my only concern would be the small gap between the bar and the bar at the bottom, and finding a way to connect such a gear in the small space available.

You could probably use half-width liftarms, with a 2L axle and a small gear, but eeesh it'd be tight! It'd be less tight if you used the next gap up from the bottom, but then you have the question of whether the coaster would have enough momentum to get up that little bit of slope. It probably would, but it'd depend on the layout.

I'd be rather surprised if Lego haven't got some specialised way of doing it, which hasn't been included in the Joker Manor set. Especially as they've included the peg on the underside of the cars, which I can't imagine would be there for any other reason.

I'm now finding myself wondering if you could make your own tracks, with lengths of hose, connected to 1x1 clip plates. I need to get myself a few of these coaster pieces to play around with...

^There might even be a steeper grade track element designed to hold the chain we haven't seen yet.

I've been wondering the same, I guess it will be down to how much tolerance you can have if the rails are not exactly the right distance apart everywhere.

@Paperballpark I was thinking the gear would be supported from the ground rather than attached to the actual track...

Yes that's what I was thinking too, but I still think it'd be tight to fit it into that space!

No, it's not as large as you were hoping ;)

Just browsing this thread since it was at the top of the list on the main page, and I see this... that is AMAZING. I would both watch that movie, and buy the heck out of that set.

^ My son wanted this set as soon as he saw it.  So just ordered it too, using up all our shared VIP points.  I wasn't sure about this set. The designer video helped me feel more excited about the purchase :)

Have seen the built set in the flesh.
It's good and I really like it.
There are some really nice features and things to look out for on the interior but personally it most definitely isn't worth the £250 asking price.
I appreciate that a big draw for the set is going to be the roller coaster parts and primarily the minifigures but for me it isn't enough of a draw to buy at full whack, so unfortunately this is going on the wanted list next to Assault on Hoth as a purchase if I can get it for a reasonably sized discount.

Just built it! It’s so huge! The pictures really don’t do the set justice. When I first saw it, it reminded me of the second arkham assylum, but it’s so much larger. Having built it, it more closely resembles the Disney Castle imo...

Today for Saint Nicholas, my son received the Joker`s Low rider set. Looking closely at the box, I see in the top right corner a blurry image, of something that looks really really close to the Joker Manor. Given that the low-rider was release at the beginning of the year, apparently the Joker Manor was in the works/plans at that time.

I wonder how many gems like this are to be found in the art-work of other sets about sets to be released later on...

I have a feeling that more people will be noticing them if they do exist, after the stunt with the MF and the new DS too.

Hey, when I was small we had #6991, and it was my favorite set. (Although #6984 and #6973 WERE close contenders.)  I guess I was kind of a weird kid though...
