Storage Drawer Solutions (UK)

BrainsluggedBrainslugged England (the grim North)Member Posts: 1,650

I was wondering if anyone had any advice re stroage drawer solutions in the UK. Ideally I'd like to be able to get drawers of different sizes/volumes that could be stacked together. And ideally be able to add inserts to some of the drawers. The main priority is that any solution has longevity - i.e. I will be able to buy the same drawers in 1/2/3 years time as my collection expands.

From my past experience (in the US), I've bought larger drawers to start with, but always wanted smaller and smaller drawers so I can sort with more granularity. The drawers I mention below look like they could be on the large side, but inserts would mitigate that problem. Then again, being able to mix small drawers in with big ones full of 2x4s, for example, would be very helpful.

I've seen people mention Really Useful Boxes from Hobbycraft. Have these been around a long time? i.e. unlikley to be discontinued any time soon? These seem to be avilable in 8cm deep drawers ( and ~20cm deep drawers ( They also seem to have drawer divider trays, but for some annoying reason these are only 3.5cm deep ( Are these the best solution or is there something better out there that lots of people are using?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Here's a recent thread discussing this, with links to older threads:

I've just bought some Really Useful Scrapbook drawers, based on Huw's review. I'm finding them great, but they don't meet all your requirements, namely, different size compartments.

You either have the full drawer, or add an insert to get 15 compartments.

So far, that's working for me. Except the longest technic beams and bricks don't fit into the compartments.

Indeed, they are not perfect but I now have 50+ of them and they meet 95% of my requirements.

That's really helpful, @Huw and @omnium. Thank you. I probably read that article while still living in the US so it wasn't relevant to me. Going to order a couple of large stacks of the scrapbook drawers and half a dozen (full height!) inserts tonight. Just need to double check I can't find a discount coupon online somewhere.

Just ordered 3 stacks of 9 drawers and 18 inserts. Hopefully that should keep me busy for a while.

Note also that big compartment drawers can be useful if you can fit a number of smaller containers in. Eg 1*1 plates in one colour that you might need a lot of can be lifted out in their box, then the whole small box returned once you are done.

For a very in-depth look at storage solutions including drawers, cabinets, tackle boxes, and more:  It includes at least two brands of drawers like the ones you are looking for.

The guide also looks at storage strategies, storing and displaying minifigures, and more.

Regarding the storage tray dividers not being suitable for larger parts, this can be rectified with a scroll saw, a little bravery and a general ambivalence to things looking store-bought. This example isn't Lego related, but here's what I did to a Wilko's organiser box when I couldn't find a toolbox in the size or layout that I wanted.
