Trying To Gauge Interest In R-3PO

FowlerBricksFowlerBricks Member Posts: 1,731
Hi!
I recently acquired a near mint condition R-3PO minifigure. What is the interest level in this character? Even though he seems quite rare, he averages at around $9-$10. Is there anyone out there looking for him?

Wow, really? Here I am, thinking this was a super rare and expensive minifig, but he's totally the opposite.

Yeah, quick google search shows him at $12.99 from a seller on Amazon with 17 in stock.

I might be interested in him if you'd consider trades.

If you want to gauge interest, take a look at BL sales data - it tells you how many are available and how many are sold (obviously on BL only), which gives an indication as to how much oversupply there is.

    https://www.bricklink.com/catalogPG.asp?M=sw344&ColorID=0

This shows you that worldwide there have been 44 sales in the past six months for new, although some of them were bulk deals (127 total figures sold). Then 37 sales of used ones, all singles. It also gives a very good indication of price. One good US seller has them for $7.83 (for new).

It also tells you that there is a supply of 434 new ones available in total, so about 2-5 years worth at current sales rates, depending on whether you exclude the bulk sales to other resellers, although obviously a lot of them are way over the current average price so unlikely to sell.

Any US buyers using BL can do better. One seller has them for $7.83 plus $3 shipping (see above), so $10.83 all in. And obvioulsy you'd be able to buy a few other figures for the same postage price.

My point was just it showing up on a normal google search and in good quantity.  In reference to him asking about demand.

Hm, interesting. Like I said, I've spent a long time thinking he's super expensive. I never even looked into what he would cost because I assumed it would be ridiculous. Well, you know what assuming does.

BL sales data usually gives a really clear picture of whether someting is rare or not, if it is in demand or not, and a good indication of value. If sales > supply, then chances are it is an in demand item and you can get the current average price or more for it. If supply > sales, then there is plenty of supply but you can probably still get average price for it reasonably easily. If supply >> sales, then it is going to be hard to sell for a premium and you will probably need to sell at below average.

Of course, everything concerning six month averages changes if (i) lego re-release the part / set / minifig or (ii) a popular MOC uses a part or there is sudden rekindled interest in a set.

^Thanks for the info. I have done what you mentioned before regarding other things, but always forget to look at the big picture. I always look at what it has sold for and what's available as a quick gloss-over, but actually dissecting the quantity available vs sold at what price hadn't occurred to me. I should do that more often.

However, I am always curious when inspecting the figures how many are listed at such a high price, while usually not selling that high. One would think the seller would lower the cost if they wanted to move the product.

Oh, yeah.  I remember this one.  It came in a box with "limited edition" printed on it, which often means they're not all that rare.

Limited Edition aka buy this one even though it's just a normal set. :)

Yeah, technically they're all limited edition, except some of them have it on the box design.

    TC-4 is much newer. there's a C-3PO, and R-3PO and a K-3PO.
