What I think is worse is the apparent frustration of the LEGO stores to get any parts (let alone good ones)
You need to be a little creative with how to attach things to the top and bottom, but it's feasible.

Some other people have considered palm tree building techniques or examples and use everything from green flippers, 1x2 plates, the 3 leaf grass that is often on the PaB walls or curved slopes to make palm trees. You don't necessarily need to official LEGO 'palm'.

I also use 3mm rigid hose threaded through brown 1x1 round bricks that are arranged close but not connected, then you can add the topping and curve of your choice...
