Nice. I also like that small boat - looks like a landing craft?

It's not listed yet on Smyths website, but the other City summer wave sets are.
Interesting that this #60162 Jungle Air Drop Helicopter carries a GBP 109.99 price sticker, but #60161 Jungle Exploration Site is "only" GBP 84.99. Does it really have that many more pieces? Seems to have the same/similar number of minifigs/animals.

    1250 pieces

So there is a tiger in the #60162 set. Leaked photo on Reddit via @CM4S

Sadly most of the model is a massive helicopter. edit: My 7 year old son says it is a really cool helicopter because it carries two motorcycles.

Pic is now in the Brickset db. So Tiger, Panther and Jaguar? Nice. Just need a lion now.

All the Jungle sets are now listed on Smths Toys new *crap* website. More detailed pictures are there but at low resolution! :(

First, LEGO Shop, now Smyths Toys, why are companies replacing tried and tested websites with crappy bug ridden new ones!

at first glance it looks smaller than last year super-copter.
looking forward to see the big cats better.  so far I think I prefer the one in the jungle exploration site (leopard?) but I may pick the black one instead (panther?) cause it's cheaper.

kidding. I know he was in the 1930s or something and lego city is modern.

Amazed at the inclusion of zero birds. Shame.

Yes, a parrot/flamingo/peacock or something like that would have been nice, as would some sort of monkey. However, the three big cats are awesome! Also love the green snake, venus fly trap, and the little frogs. I *really* don't want to have to buy 33 pointless ugly yellow vehicles just to get all the critters though... will probably just buy the large set with the leopard, and then wait with fingers crossed for the other animals to be included in a future zoo set...

Likewise. I know it's a business and they always put the most wanted elements in the most expensive sets, but scattering the three big cats like that and giving us yet another crocodile (which I had bought a Swamp Police set for) on the smallish one is mean.

A "Fun at the Zoo" set modelled after #60134 and #60153 would be a dream. Or a CMF-like series just for animals, including those elusive goats.

Or the Ostrich, which only appeared in the Prince Of Persia theme, or the seagull which has only appeared in a CMF series...

How about something like this, but with a brick built rock / tree / whatever, just so it's still a construction toy?

Sorry for the P________ reference. I hadn't bought any since I was a kid, but did get this one as a gift to a friend who loves meerkats.

How popular were the Friends animal packs? Some of them were pretty cool (the ones without bows) and were similar to this idea. I remember buying the penguin scene. If they rolled a similar product into the City line, rather than friends, that'd be amazing.

I wonder why it has never been done? They already have many animal moulds.

RE: all the comments about getting animals cheaper/more easily:  why would TLG wish to sell premium parts for pocket change money when they can force us to buy them along with lots of other bricks for much more money?  Maybe it's not fan-friendly, but it's sure friendly to the bottom line of the company...

The #60158 seems like the weakest link in the line up. For a helicopter it is actually a pretty neat one but this set sorely lacks either a jungle animal or a plant monster thing. A gold cup and a spider just don't offer much in terms of play value.

I think this series is very weak, especially when you compare it to the Deep Sea series.

I picked up #60161 Jungle Exploration Site last weekend and had it built the following day. More than half the set is used to build the temple and crashed plane. It has a fabulous Leopard. Plenty of play features if that's your thing! :) The minifigs are very nicely printed. Incidentally, there are very few duplicate minifigs across the whole theme! Yes, it has a naff helicopter but that only uses 1 of the 9 bags. I can wholeheartedly recommend this set if you dabble in City sets. Although, it will definitely drop significantly in price later in the year. I will buy more sets in this theme, probably #60159 Jungle Halftrack Mission next, but will wait for some price reductions now that I've built the Jungle Exploration Site set.

I am surprised there are no birds of any kind in this theme. A monkey would also have been nice. The Friends Jungle Rescue theme was much more diverse in it's menagerie! The theme is still a great improvement over last year's Volcano Explorers.

Does anyone know is the Air-drop helicopter is going to be sold in the US? At the moment the database only shows a UK/EU price and a UK/EU availability.

Nice summation of the set. I like city lines because even the pricier sets tend to get discounted (unless a TRU exclusive, in which case fewer chances). I wonder which set will last only 3-6 months then disappear?

What is the China section supposed to be? Pandas maybe? Seems kind of odd when the other spots are labeled by animal type.

I agree and find the "KINA" (China) label odd for one of the prototype sets.  Although it doesn't show which animals belong under this heading, I would imagine that the Bactrian (2 humped) Camel would be one of the animals, and perhaps some waterfowl.

Here are the test strikes for the Zoo and Barnyard set animals....

I like the new cats, but I would have liked a bit more jungle with them.
We already have the molds for Vines and Ferns from the Friends line. All TLG needed to do was print them in new colours? Sand Green, Olive and Mid-Green?
Throw in a few coconut prints from the Moana sets and a couple of Palm Trees.
I am guessing the designers got carried away by the new Giant Venus fly trap.....

Brown Vehicles would have been a nice alternative to the Green ones just phased out with the end of the Volcano sub-theme. But I guess the kids preferred the Dark Yellow.
I guess the minifigs are not planning on hiding?

The Half Track Mission did not really need the buggy and could have had more vegetation.
And did we really need another badly designed Cargo Helicopter set?

Even with these small niggles I predict this theme will do quite well with all markets.

If it follows the trend of the previous TRU large exclusive sets, August 1st.

As a heads up for anyone like me who just wants the big cats from these sets the panther and leopard are available on bricks and pieces (UK) at about £5 each.

Unfortunately the tiger isn't available. :-(

I get they're excited about it, but still that's a little lazy. One pitcher plant swap out would have been great.

They're available in the US as well. Minus the tiger being listed as sold out. I didn't attempt to call yet, but did order the other two online. One is just over $5 and one is just under $5.

I just ordered the black panther and leopard/jaguar too! :D Thanks very much to this thread, I wouldn't have known otherwise. AND I got to use my $10 VIP Reward, so all I paid was $3 in shipping. :)

New molds generally get put into multiple sets in large part to justify the expense of creating the mold itself. It'd make no sense to only include that highly specialized mold in two sets instead of three, particularly if the pitcher plant you envision it being replaced with would require yet another new mold. There's also the matter of Venus Flytraps providing a much more "active" play feature than pitcher plants.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the man-eating plants in the city theme considering my preference for the brick-built ones in Elves, but I know better than to assume laziness on the part of the designers when there are plenty of more plausible reasons for the designs.
  • SumoLegoSumoLego Member Posts: 15,248

I suspect everyone is fearing they'll be like the goats and only appear in one set each!

^pretty much - I think the way these things tend to go they might put a tiger in another set but they are just as likely to use this same mould in other colours lioness/mountain lions but leave the tiger, panther & leopards as one offs. I'm trying to think of other big cats that could use he mould but it's too bulky for cheetah, servals etc

The thing I found interesting when placing the order is that it was obvious that the person I was talking to didn't get the pictorial inventory as they could see the name of the piece and colour but in the case of the tiger didn't know what animal it was (the name on their system is PROTECTIVE BAG,ANIMAL so she could tell it was an animal piece but not which one)
