Hobbit/LOTR sets in book sequence?

Hi all,

I'm early in the process of reading The Hobbit to my kids, followed by Lord of the Rings.

Along the way, I'm planning on picking up any Hobbit/LOTR lego sets that we don't have and building them with the kids in order by book sequence.

Are there any resources out there that list the lego sets in that order? Or anyone who knows both the lego and the Tolkien well enough to list them in book sequence?

I should note that this is my first time reading them as well, though I've seen the movies.

Check out the main Brickset website and search for the lord of the rings theme. Each set has a tab with the film it's from, so you can click and see the sets from that film.

Thanks msanders! I've been to that list on brickset but it's my understanding that the movies are not exactly the same sequence as the books though, right? So I'm wondering if there's anything more precise than the set tab or box label.

Ah. Yeah, I understand now (my fault for quickly reading a responding). I'm not aware of any resource that lists them as you suggest (May be you could be the first). Certainly the Hobbit has borrowed more from The Lord of the Rings to 'pad out' the book into 3 films.

By the way - I've had exactly the same idea as you bug my son is only 4 yrs old, so a few years yet before doing the reading-building journey!

Bookwise my knowledge is there so I could probably take a reasonable stab at the Lego sequence if I have some quiet time

That's an excellent idea. The LotR theme is one of the absolute best in LEGO.

The minifigure designs are absolutely flawless.

Roughly figured the Hobbit sequence, ignoring the various promo figures (& assuming all Hobbit sets have been tagged)
#79003 - Unexpected Gathering
Then skipping Rivendell, the next is in the Misty Mountains
#79010 - Goblin King Battle
#79000 - Riddles for the Ring
#79002 - Attack of the Wargs

Then another story skip
#79001 - Escape From Mirkwood Spiders
The next few happen between Spiders & Barrel but are only briefly mentioned in a couple of lines, one roughly here & one later on iirc so I've put them in an order that makes sense to me
#79011 - Dol Guldur Ambush
#79014 - Dol Guldur Battle
#79015 - Witch King Battle
Then back with the actual story
#79004 - Barrel Escape
#79013 - Laketown Chase
#79018 - The Lonely Mountain
#79016 - Attack on Laketown (makes most sense here)
#79013 - Mirkwood Elf Army
#79017 - Battle of the Five Armies

I think that's all. I'll get to LOTR next, hopefully no odd things appearing there that should be here.

Surprised by how few LOTR sets there are. Biiiig story gaps.

#9469 - Gandalf Arrives
#9472 - Attack on Weathertop
#79006 - The Council of Elrond
(Flashback time)
#10237 - The Tower of Orthanc
#79005 The Wizard Battle
#9473 - The Mines of Moria

The next couple make most sense here
#9476 - The Orc Forge
#9471 - Uruk Hai Army
#9474 - The Battle of Helm's Deep ( Tower of Orthanc is useful again here)
#9470 - Shelob Attacks

#79008 - Pirate Ship Ambush
#79007 - Battle at the Black Gate.

No Minas Tirith or Pelennor Fields so you'll just have to sleep do with a bunch of knights, some walls, some orcs & a troll or two.

Of course, you could complicate the plan further by bringing back An Unexpected Gathering at the start of doing the LOTR sets, just switch out the Hobbit minifigs and put in the LOTR versions. And you get to build a great set again.

I'd put #79012 Mirkwood Elf Army right after the Barrel Escape set! You can use the figures again for the battle of 5 army's though..

In fact, it is probably best to pluck the minifigures from most of the sets first, at least the full Company of Dwarves and the Fellowship. Bag End looks much better with all the dwarves present, then let them travel between the sets as more are made.

I was going to have them around there & indeed, the elf minifigs would be useful but the presence of goblins in the set caused me to put it later
