Both domestic and international, I often get orders where part value is much less than shipping, and I offer the cheapest option. $200 is crazy even for international postage from the US. did they select priority, express, something else expensive? try offering the cheaper 1st class price. Guatemala is Price Group 9 for 1st class - $13.50 half pound, $22.50 2 pounds, $33.50 3 pounds, $49.50 4 pounds (retail, commercial base for intl 1st class mail package is 5% off). Is it particularly big/heavy for the dollar value?

That was simply the only option available from USPS (the only way I ship). No first class available at all.

It will cost over $200 for me to ship it there.

What are the odds they'll pay?

Er... what in the world are you shipping to get that sort of price estimate?

I wouldn't invoice that otherwise you'll be liable to get a negative for outlandish shipping fees. Unless I'm missing something here...

    A constraction figure.

Not an issue. It's the only method available. What would you rather I do? Not invoice, and do something that is actually a violation?

I'm saying I wouldn't invoice $200 as the shipping cost, because that number seems incorrect. If you send an invoice with that amount before doing complete and thorough homework you're liable to get a negative.

Where are you getting $200 as the cost to ship a constraction figure to Guatemala? Did you talk it through with USPS? Again, I'm not sure where you're getting the $200 tag, but if you're getting it from a relatively reliable source I would box up the constraction figure, take it to USPS, and get a shipping estimate. Either that or call them.

I apologize if I'm just flat out missing something here.

Don't. I read recently their postal system is shutdown/ non functional. Not sure if there are third party options but it will still likely be a big risk.

^ Not exactly related, but I was backpacking through a few central American countries (mind you this was a couple years ago now) and I sent postcards in each country I went through.  Got to Guatemala and sent a few.  Returned home after a couple months and my friends and fam thanked me for the postcards... then awhile later got a message from a friend saying, "Where in the world are you now!?" as he'd gotten all the other ones but only gotten the one from Guatemala, months after I returned home!  A couple others never got the card at all.  Soooo... maybe their postal system is not that great? I'm not sure how that justifies a $200 cost but wow!

So, would you recommend using Bricklink or Brickowl for someone interested in starting up an online store?

Which are you most familiar with? Start there. If you have not bought from either, do a few small test orders to get to grips with how things work on each.

for international, 1st class mail package is listed separate from 1st class mail letter/large envelope.
do you offer/require insurance? maybe the issue is that 1st class isn't available with that

    -

listed some S17 - 3 Rocket Boy, Retro Spaceman, Frenchman without dog, bunny from Vet
dress pieces from 3 Elf Maiden (more of those coming - like Rogue I'm gonna be army building and switching parts around)

I have just checked Royal Mail shipping to Guatemala from the UK

    International signed is GBP 12.45
Priority 1 Day delivery is GBP 71.95
Priority 7 Day delivery is GBP 59.55

    and checking the couriers:
    UPS Shipping is GBP 76.63

Can't believe US shipping is that expensive - I thought ours was expensive!

Since 1st class mail international exists, I'm trying to figure out why you're not seeing it as an option.
It's only available up to 4 pounds. I can't imagine 1 figure weighing that much, are you mailing multiples?

  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,354
@SprinkleOtter you aren't missing anything. Sorry for acting as if you're the confused one.
Looking at the USPS website, 1st class isn't available for packages to Guatemala, only Global Express Guaranteed. Maybe that's because of issues with their postal system as mentioned elsewhere in this thread.
I had been looking at the pricelist rather than calculator.

    @Calv
international postage from the US is often higher even without weird situations

    For example

1st Class Mail package to Canada
    $9.50 up to 8 oz (226g)
    $15.50 up to 2 lb (906g)

    Small Packet to US
    $8.61 [$6.33 USD] up to 250g (8.82oz)
    $11.29 [$8.30 USD] up to 500g (1 lb 1.64 oz)
    $16.82 [$12.36 USD] up to 1kg (2 lb 3.27 oz)

Got 33 #30279 on sale at Target - listed them before I left the store, they sold before I got home. can't complain about that turnover. buyer is the same guy who got all of my last batch of 30279's.
    Also parted out 21 #30401

    19 #30354 sealed, 15 more 30401 parts
More Rocket Boy sets and Elf Maiden parts later tonight
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,354
Got another 13 #30401, and sorted all 49 I got recently. It was proportionally easier than sorting smaller quantities of larger sets, as I expected, why items per lot is part of my part out decisions. Yet it was different. I dumped all the parts into storage bins and picked out the larger parts until I had a manageable pile to pour on my desk, then I sorted the largest pieces amongst that. When I've sorted a set before, I have bags ready for each part, but this was so many more copies that I often needed to get larger bags.

Parted out #21306 Yellow Submarine. Thought of getting another, so I priced for part out. Total was okay, so I listed this one and would build the 2nd rather than repeat pricing work. Parted out 8 #30351 since the price was so low sealed. Also listed extras from #31048 Lakeside Lodge and some used DUPLO bricks.
Made grand progress on part sorting last weekend.
Started using tenth cent increments up to 2c instead of 1c; I'm still using half cents up to 20.

    Price cuts on:
    Promo sets
    Various parts
Disney, Scooby Doo, and Angry Birds minifigures

WalMart snack size bags are now squarish, 5.1x4.7 instead of 6.5x3.25. I might try some. I often use the old size for parts/quantities too large to fit (comfortably) in a 3x5, and this would still work. I'll look for a deal on the old size. WM also has 2x3's 100 for $1 [I thought $2 for some reason], making Ecobox *slightly* cheaper. Online is much cheaper on 3x5, brick and mortar for larger sizes.

    Added extras from #31062

Foreign buyer wanted to cancel because shipping was higher than expected even though it was the lowest amount stated on my terms page for that country. I told the buyer so but decided to cancel anyway. I figure trying to force an unwanted order could lead to problems and I don't want the inventory tied up during the NPB process.
Maybe people don't read, or assume it will be like postage from another country to the US.

    re @Kevin_Hyatt

Was your store getting too time-consuming or was the rest of your life getting busier? Running my store feels more involved now so I'm more selective about adding inventory. I'm just as busy at my regular job, and I've got a raise coming up.

I wonder what kind of deal I'd take for all my inventory. It seems like such a big sale would be a logistical challenge; how did that go for you?
  • Kevin_HyattKevin_Hyatt Member Posts: 778
@KingAlanI a bit of both tbh. Doing orders of dozens of lots of one or two elements at a few pence each was just a massive waste of time, even if the total was £50+ it was taking me ages to pick and pack.

Got a good (enough!) deal on the last 300k elements left in store. Roughly 50% current average price. As part of that Im delivering it but it's a good chance to have a meet up with some friends way out West.

Yeah, those orders are painful to pick.
Every time I get one of those I consider putting up a €1 lot limit or something like that. Next time...

In other news, I've had the BrickOwl store running for a while and I'm happy that all the syncing with BrickLink is working fine. So if you have a preference for it:

20 *more* #30401 - Target keeps having 20% sales on Friends. The part out ratio of 2.35 is solid to begin with, I want the minidoll parts, and it's relatively easy to handle larger quantities of fewer lots.
A recent order included all I had of one part in that set, so I messaged the buyer that I got more.

    @Kevin_Hyatt @asfarinha
Yes, orders with many lots and low value are a pain, but I'm afraid that policies intended to avoid those might cost me orders that aren't a problem to handle.
I try to stock large quantities, but that doesn't prevent buyers from ordering small amounts of what I do have.

About parting out minidolls/minifigures, I've been thinking I should probably start doing it, as a lot of minifigs (mainly City, Friends, and Elves) have just been sitting there forever, not selling.
Do you find it worthwhile to do it, considering all the added storage needed?
    KingAlanI
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,354
@asrfarinha i meant that I want minidoll parts myself to mix and match in a MOC and I see that wasn't clear.
I've thought about selling parts but thought people would want all the pieces of a character. Maybe I'll part out common figures. I'm not sure what ratio makes it worthwhile.
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,354
Fully sorted dozens of #30401 today. Rechecked prices on most pieces in the set, in case pricing too high was why I still had large quantities left of many of them. In general, when I add quantity, I often want to adjust tiered pricing. Looked up those pieces by name, so ended up looking at other colors in my inventory while I was at it. That's enough BrickLink work for now.

need some advice from experienced BLers. I'm thinking of trying to sell all the bricks in my store as a bulk deal. (just the bricks)
    https://store.bricklink.com/vsimovic
I have 84000+ bricks, listed for an equivalent 8350 british pounds.
I was thinking of offering the whole lot, with shipping included (from Croatia) for 3600 british pounds.
First I'd go through the whole inventory so the list would be 100% accurate (I have more bricks to add to BL). What do you guys think? how to aproach something like this?
  • asrfarinhaasrfarinha Member Posts: 140

Only a few orders lately, but paring down inventory
Had an order which was large enough it took me a couple days to get to. Couldn't do it before leaving for my regular job like I often do with smaller orders, busy/tired after work. Had trouble finding several lots; needed to work on sorting but still frustrating.
Had some more manageable orders; my favorite was the one that was just 10 CMF's. :)

City minifigs generally part out and sell well, most of mine get parted out. I haven't bothered parting out Friends, licensed or themes like Chima etc. as they have too many custom parts which not many people are after.

I recently set all my Friends and Chima figs at 50% discount (I sell at 6 month average sale price) Sold most of them within a couple of weeks, most of the chima figs going to a single reseller.

It depends, most people who try to sell a whole store have already sold all the good stock as they have already started the progressive discounting 10% to 20% to 30%  to 40% etc.

If this is the case most of what you have left will be the harder to sell items and so anybody looking to buy will want them pretty cheap. I've heard of other store owners picking up the dregs for 10% - 20% of the original value (80% -90% off). It really does depend on what you have left.

Makes sense that City minifig parts would sell well - there aren't specific characters that people would want whole, which is why I don't usually part out figs. Specialized items moving slowly is a problem, but I hadn't thought of it for fig parts. I buy Friends parts to mix and match for a crowd, and others might do similar with traditional minifigs.
I was wondering about the specifics of selling off remaining parts. I figured having less popular stuff left would be a problem.

    -

Lately I've had a few small orders but per Murphys Law I had trouble actually locating some of the pieces.

Also, I've gotten a few orders from buyers with -1 feedback, but the negative was awhile ago and they pay quickly with no other trouble this time.
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,354
Very rare occasion when I could consolidate inventory bins - sold nearly all of my medium azure round plate so I could put the remainder back with the other medium azure plate

Added a Rocket Boy, Vacation Batman and some parts from 2 Elf Girl. Price cuts on all those and some other minifig parts & accessories.
About the only inventory I've added lately
Really scaling back now that I got a raise at my regular job, and I'm close to a benefit eligibility limit - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welfare_trap

most of the feedback I get is generic positive comments, or shipped quick/well packed/etc. This was funny: "A buyer's haiku, Is the highest form of praise, Thank you very much!"

most of the feedback I leave simply describes how quick they paid and perhaps early communication
