@Legogram It's not a bad parts pack for Minecraft but there is nothing unique in the set anymore. I'm not sure you will get much of a return on your investment if that's why you are thinking of buying them.
The Mine #21118 is a nice and iconic set that has increased in value since it retired. It also had a shorter run than the other first year minifig based sets. I would definitely pick one up for RRP if you find one.

^ #21116 Crafting Box is an okay set and does contain a lot of generic Minecraft-related bricks, of course. The main draw, originally, was the diamond pickaxe and Mooshroom, but both have been made available in other sets since.
Some of the builds are ok, but nothing too exciting.
I do use some of the builds in my displays, mainly as "fillers", to simply add some landscape.
If you can get it for a good price, I'd definitely go ahead, as you'll find it useful.

Adding: If it's an either / or situation, you need to decide whether you will be able to get the new sets at a later date. If not, I'd go for the new sets, rather than the Crafting Box.

So far, I've got hold of #21129 The Mushroom Island, #21133 The Witch Hut and #21134 The Waterfall Base.

The Mushroom Island is a little bit underwhelming, but the mushrooms themselves, although very small (understandably), are nice. Getting another Mooshroom and a baby one as well is appreciated. It is a cheap set, however.

I really like both The Waterfall Base and The Witch Hut.
The Waterfall Base shows some excellent imagination in creating an interesting player-built structure. It is well appointed with multiple beds, a trap, crafting tables, chests, some decoration and lots of windows. There's also a new tamed ocelot (cat), a fishing rod, fish and a coloured sheep. All good!
The Witch Hut is more "standard game content" than the Base, but it is a nice representation of the in-game assets. The Witch minifigure itself is excellent, with a molded-on / glued-on hat and a re-colour of the standard villager torso and head. The use of new, small curved tiles for the waterlilys is excellent and I like the build for the hut, which contains the requisite cauldron and crafting table but is missing a flower pot with mushroom. This can easily be added, of course, if required. There is also a green potion bottle, which goes nicely with the built brewing stand and additional potion bottles in trans-red, -blue and -clear. Finally, there are three new slimes, which are simply printed trans-green Minecraft heads, but these work very nicely. The little slime bouncing action-feature is rather cute, but not ground-breaking in any way!

I'm looking forward to picking up the remaining sets, as there are some nice new elements in some, such as the enchanting table and enchanted pick-axe in The Ice Spikes, the various-sized Magma cubes and new 2x2 plate in The Nether Railway, as well as getting another Zombie Pig-Man.

Overall, I think that this has been an excellent wave of sets for Minecraft and I'm really looking forward to seeing the 2017 Wave 2 releases!

    I still want a chicken! :-)

^^^^ I agree with @SeanTheCollector regarding #21118 The Mine. It's a really great set which looks great and has some excellent play features. I've extended the minecart track of mine with additional parts to make a full loop and will try to extend it further so that the track can start "outside the mountain" in my next large diorama build.

    @SeanTheCollector and @JudgeChuck
Thank you for your help and guidance!
I decided not to purchase the crafting box.
I did pick-up 1 each of #21129 and #21130.  When I went to the store to collect them, I found good prices on #21113 The Cave and #21123 The Iron Golem, so I now have 2 sets of those.  Hopefully that was a good decision.
I just need to find a reasonable deal on The Mine, and on the rest of the latest wave of sets.  Oh, and I also need to find the space to make my display, which will be the most difficult job of all. :-)
    Thank you again!

Good luck, @Legogram! Yes, finding enough space is definitely a challenge. I have no idea how I am going to cram everything onto my dining room table next time I do a Minecraft "big build", with all of the 2017 sets as well... It'll be fun trying though! :-)

Noticed an update on my Facebook feed from the Lego Minecraft group with the below picture and note:

"A new LEGO Minecraft set is going to be out soon. It's the biggest set we have ever made. What do you think it is? And which mobs and characters do you hope to find inside the box?"

Looks like it fits the bill for 21137 "The Mountain Cave".  Box weight is 11.2 lbs.  Havent seen a piece count.

Wow. Must start saving right now. :-)

There's definitely a bat in there, as well as Steve / Alex, a skeleton, what looks like a creeper and perhaps a wolf.

I'm not sure what the leg / tail to the right hand side is likely to be...

It looks like a spider to me. This is going to be one big set; I reckon the back is going to be hollowed out unless they decide to go with a "dolls house" approach. :-D
  • JudgeChuckJudgeChuck UKMember Posts: 1,229
^Yes, that was what I was initially thinking, but I can't correlate it with any mobs that I know of, unless there are Giant Spiders that I am unaware of!

Next to the Steve holding the shovel, there seems to be a disembodied head and shoulders, which I'm unsure of.

On  a separate note, looking forward, hopefully we'll get some of the new mobs that have been added to the game over recent months:

Evoker, Husk, Vex, Llama, Mule, Donkey, Polar Bear, Stray (same as a skeleton though), Vindicator

We do still need Rabbits and Chickens!

spychickens... they should include a chicken somewhere where it makes no sense (since the MC ones do that, too)

I thought I would share with you my unopened Minecraft sets display! Previously made sets were packed away (in a 20ft container) before I recently moved home. However, I've repurchased nearly all the minifig sets. Can you determine which ones are missing without reference to brickset?

  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector BirminghamMember Posts: 764
@Bumblepants I have the four non-minifig sets in my container, although I also have a second #21107 "The End" set mostly hidden in the corner of the top left shelf! I still haven't built any of the non-minifig sets but will do so at some point. :)

I don't see the skinpacks, or the silhouette of the Mountain Cave.
  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector BirminghamMember Posts: 764
@HugeYellowBrick Yes, I'm missing the skinpacks from the display. I also have one of each stored away but I'm also planning on picking up another pair of skin packs when I'm next in a Lego store which will probably be soon since I've just realized the 2016 Calendar 100 VIP bonus points vouchers will expire by 27/Apr and I have 4 of them!

I can't wait to see more details of the Mountain Cave. :-)

  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector BirminghamMember Posts: 764
@SMC Yep, I originally ordered #21134 "The Waterfall Base" from John Lewis but after 2 failed attempts at delivering the set to me undamaged, I gave up! I will probably pick up the set from Lego shop when I next visit now.

    You're missing #21116 Crafting Box. :-)
  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector BirminghamMember Posts: 764
@JudgeChuck I'm also missing #21124 "The End Portal" from my display. I haven't managed to find the set on decent discount all year. My original copy of the set was made, dismantled and stashed before my move. However, I do have a duplicate Crafting Box which i should retrieve from storage for my display! :)

So if Minecraft's primary target market typically can't keep more than $40 in their pocket, and don't have parents that are willing to shovel money their way, why is there another (potentially) $200+ Minecraft set in the works? Especially one that looks like a pile of 2x- brick.

^Yeah I wonder about that too. I guess The Village must be a good seller? Seems like this past year or the one before Minecraft was cited in their financial report as being one of their best selling themes but I could be remembering that wrong.
  • FauchFauch FranceMember Posts: 2,475
at first glance it doesn't even look as good as the village. and as a 2x- bricks parts pack it will probably be overpriced. well, that's a good thing all D2C don't appeal to everyone, as most of us don't have infinite money.
  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector BirminghamMember Posts: 764
It will be a definite buy for me whatever it looks like! I have 2 Village sets but I was disappointing with the number of Villagers included and the fact that the Iron Golem appeared in another cheap set that year.

Regarding #21137  The Mountain Cave, I hope there is lots to see inside the cave as well as on the mountain. The bat doesn't look great from the photo. However, I am looking forward to getting the hostile wolf to complement the tamed one we got in #21121 The Desert Outpost. I'm not sure about the black sheep or the charged creeper, maybe they will grow on me! :)

I am pretty excited for it.  I personally love the Minecraft Lego sets, reminds me of a more classic building experience.  Its a lot of fun to do with my kids and the play value is great.  I also feel like the build quality has been steadily improving, but in its own unique way that I can totally understand folks who are not fans of Minecraft not liking.  One of my big complaints early on was that the flagship first release set 21118 The Mine, was all open, making it not very attractive or "realistic".  It kept the price down, allowed them to fit a ton of features in and gave it easy playability, but honestly ruined it as display set for Minecraft enthusiasts or to effectively fit in with the other, later sets.  I feel like #21137 will remedy this, including a lot of the same basic features (looks like an abandoned mineshaft in there along with the rail line on the outside) but fully covered on at least two sides so it has a more finished look and will fit in better.  My only complaint with the newer sets has been the dramatic reduction in "mineable" 2x2 blocks with the single center stud tiles on top.  I loved how some of the earlier sets had lots of these in many different types, not just ores, that allowed you to play at the mining and some basic transformative abilities just like in the game.  They still sometimes come with a special brick or two, but the focus now seems to be on removable sets of blocks for reconfiguring, which is nice, but not quite the same from a playability feature (since in the game, everything is done with single blocks, not these various double blocks or beyond).

^Yeah I wonder about that too. I guess The Village must be a good seller? Seems like this past year or the one before Minecraft was cited in their financial report as being one of their best selling themes but I could be remembering that wrong.

A 2016 press release from LEGO Systems, Inc. listed it as one of the top selling themes of 2015, though bear in mind that info was US-specific. On a global level the top selling themes for the past two years have been City, Star Wars, Friends, Ninjago, and Duplo.

It's probably safe to say that LEGO Minecraft is doing quite well for itself. I doubt LEGO would be releasing a D2C set this size if The Village hadn't sold well. Also, since this is a D2C set, it's not expected to sell as many units as a typical retail set. The KFOL audience is many orders of magnitude larger than the AFOL audience, so even if only a small fraction of that audience buys it, it could still conceivably meet those expectations.

This looks fantastic! As ever, it's not going to appeal to non-Minecraft fans, but who cares? ;-) As people have commented, the LEGO Minecraft theme must be selling well enough that TLG have produced two more waves for 2017 and another huge D2C set.
The new minecart-style tracks are great, there are wild wolves, a bat, a charged creeper, slimes (including a large one), taiga-style grass and trees, an armoured zombie and a black sheep, as well as Alex carrying a shield. Plus another enchanted weapon, cave spider and Enderman.
There also seems to be some kind of rotating play feature in the top right wall and there's a stone "hut" for Alex and Steve to hide in.
There's obviously going to be the cave itself behind the facade as well, so it'll be interesting to see what is currently hidden.
This is a definite purchase for me, though I dread to hear the cost!
    :-)

I expect they would show all the mobs on the outside art to make it a more attractive buy. I wonder if there is a mechanism to return the minecart to the top of the mountain?

You are probably right regarding the MOBs. However, it would be nice to get more than 1 Bat for such a large cave! I also hope the Big Slime will be exclusive to this set!

I would like the track to continue all the way thru the cave joining up in a loop. Perhaps with an elevator section on the right side of the cave. There does seem to be several different control knobs on that side. I'm also hoping they have plenty of different ores available for mining at different parts inside the cave. I would expect to see some dynamite as well.
  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector BirminghamMember Posts: 764

I would expect to see some dynamite as well.

I meant to say, I don't think the single TNT at the top of the cave is suffient for such a large set. :)
  • ThoughtsonblocksThoughtsonblocks United StatesMember Posts: 178
I am curious about that knob to the right of the TNT.  There is a one piece wall section below it that looks like it might pop open when the knob is turned.  But there is also something going on underneath the arrow sign.  Love the diversity of items/mobs.  I see an armor rack in there too.  I am guessing the building to the left of the TNT with the trans blue creeper face has some basic furnishing too (bed, furnace, crafting box etc) and a door that leads to the track.  REALLY want to see the back so we can see how good/bad of a job they did finishing the interior.
  • JudgeChuckJudgeChuck UKMember Posts: 1,229
Perhaps there is some clever gearing, which tips the top, flat minetrack up, to send the minecart on its way? It's difficult to see what the mechanism is exactly.
It would also be nice to somehow connect the original #21118 The Mine to this set in some way. I PABed / Bricklinked enough parts to create enough minetrack to make a full loop, so I've got some leeway, if it's not directly possible to do so.
Do we have an ETA for this, or is it likely to be August, as someone mentioned somewhere for the Summer releases?
  • SeanTheCollectorSeanTheCollector BirminghamMember Posts: 764
@JudgeChuck If more track is needed, it's probably better to stock up on #21130 The Nether Railway when Argos or Tesco does a 3 for 2 deal. It looks like the Mountain Cave uses the same pieces as the Nether Railway.

The Crafting Box 2.0 and Ocean Monument are due out on 1/August based on the labels displayed at the Toy Show where they were revealed. My guess would have been that they release this later in the year, perhaps 1/Sep or 1/Oct, since last year they released on 1/Mar (main sets), 1/Jun (Village) and 1/Sep (Fortress). On the other hand, this may be out 1/Jun given all the hints we have seen.

The picture shows two bats (one on the left, one on the right). ;)

Gotta say that while I'm not a Minecraft fan and don't intend to get this set, this is one of the first ones to really capture the scale of the kinds of landscapes I've seen when my younger brother plays. It's definitely impressive!

@SeanTheCollector yes, absolutely right, but I extended my Mine a long time ago! I may well look at doing the same with the new mine track style though, as you suggest.

    @Lyichir I missed the second Bat! :)

I've never played the actual game myself. I have watched a few youtube videos of other people playing though. For me the theme brings back the nostalgia of old world lego while still being new. It's also not littered with Helicopters and other vehicles! :)

Just visited the LEGO Minecraft instagram website and spotted the 3.36kg pile of bricks for #21137 The Mountain Cave set! Wow that is a big pile of LEGO! :)

Some interesting things in the pile. The fireman's pole suggests some kind of elevator mechanism inside the cave. There's also a steak bone to tame the aggressive wolves! Does anyone spot anything else of special interest?

    No sausages, no buy!

Additionally on the big image composition there's  some play feature in the bottom right, bottom-left of the waterfall... another thumb-wheel.
