If anyone is curious, I made a list that shows my collection before I started selling it off:

    https://brickset.com/sets/list-19146

This list contains about 95% of the collection I had (the other 5% consisted of sets or other items not listed in the Brickset database).

As always, if you are interested in buying anything left in my collection, please use these links:

    http://brickset.com/sets/ownedby-ToddMyers

    http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=toddmyers&sort=rel

I am still offering a 10% discount off of any of my prices listed in my CL ads.

Well, April was the worst month of selling that I've had.  Hopefully May will pick up and I can move some of my remaining sets.

I am still offering a 10% discount off of any of my prices listed in my CL ads, and I may be able to do a bit better than that if multiple sets are purchased.  PM me if you are interested.

If anyone wants to check out pictures of the sets that I have left, I created a gallery here: http://www.imagebam.com/gallery/89wozc80k3ongal73671fhzy3ek2ky5t

With the exception of sets 491, 1651, 5510, 31003 and the Cat mosaic, all of my remaining sets were purchased sealed and have only been built once by me (and most have been displayed under glass, so dust has been kept to a minimum).   One other exception: 21050, where the seals have been broken but the inner contents are still sealed.

Although I removed the 10% discount offer from my CL ads, I will still offer a 10% discount off of my CL prices for the Brickset forum.

    Hi Todd,
Out of curiosity, can you offer some retrospective and/or words of wisdom regarding your collecting experience? Very few of us have the opportunity to amass such a vast collection, so I'd be interesting to know what your experiences were. Can you comment on the following:
    - Which sets to you were the most memorable?
    - Were there any sets that were surprisingly good / surprisingly bad?
    - Given that you have sets from the past 20+ years, which sets / series do you think are undervalued or overvalued?
    - Any other words of wisdom you'd like to share with fellow collectors?
  • TheWeekInBricksTheWeekInBricks UKMember Posts: 6
That was really interesting, and your former collection was remarkable. Also, congrats on two years of very effective selling. I do have one remaining question; why didn't you keep a special handful of sets? You keep talking about how much you liked the Santa Fe train, surely you could find room to keep that one around?

More like, an ex-vintage wine collector should not keep vintage wine in the cellar, if he doesn't want to be identified as a vintage wine collector.

@ToddMyers : Thank you very much for that detailed and well-written retrospective! It is definitely a welcome reminder to not lose one's head in the hobby, and never forget that ultimately these are plastic bricks. Is there a reason why you kept everything on display rather than rotating your built sets?

@TheWeekInBricks -- I debated about keeping a few favorites, but I know myself and I knew that would be a slippery slope, so @bluedragon is spot on.  @SumoLego brings up a more uncomfortable truth (at least for me).  I never really understood the toy collector's mentality until, one day, I suddenly became a toy collector.  When I took the time to think about it, I was ultimately uncomfortable with the money I was spending on the collection, knowing that money could be put to "better" use somewhere else.   I'm certainly not going to judge toy collectors for what they do and what they spend their money on, but I just made the personal decision that LEGO is not where I wanted to spend all of my capital.

I also made a contemporaneous decision to downsize the one other collection I had -- I've been a long-time weapons collector (non-firearm, nothing truly antique or historic), and ever since I had a kid 15 years ago, it remained stored away and inaccessible.  I've sold off over 75% of that collection, so I guess that pushing 50 has me in a downsizing mindset.

@andrewt - To answer your display question, I guess I just did not see the point of being a build collector and hiding some of the sets away.  Disassembly is a pain (tearing down and inventorying my UCS Falcon and Liberty was not fun at all), so once it was built, I just made room for it in the collection.

If I had unlimited funds, it would have been cool to creates some kind of space where all was safely displayed behind glass for the public to see (thinking of something like the Toy and Plastic Brick Museum up in Bellaire, Ohio), but that was just a pipe-dream.  There were few people I could show the collection off to when it was in my basement, and I just finally decided that it all was not worth it in the end.

    @ToddMyers Thanks for the response.

@SumoLego I think there's a point where the 'potential' money isn't that important - handing over in bulk to a reseller for a good deal is worth it to save on the years of effort. (Just look at how long Todd's been at it!) That's not saying people shouldn't sell their own stuff for fair prices, but I certainly don't have the patience for it.

@ToddMyers - How many pieces are the two mosaics?
  • ToddMyersToddMyers Cincinnati, OHMember Posts: 403
    edited May 2017
@samiam391- Both use 1x1 plates on the inside of the 48x48 baseplate with a surround of 2x3 or 2x4 slopes (so that is 1936 1x1 plates in each mosiac).  Bricklink lists a total piece count of 2216 for the Tiger and 2126 for the Cat (I believe that I have all extras for both, including the dark gray human tool for each).

With the reduced pricing and 10% discount, both mosaics are now $450 ($202.50 for the Cat by itself and $247.50 for the Tiger by itself).  Pictures may not do either one of these justice -- out of all of the sets that I had, people almost always commented on these two pieces.

Todd, Thanks for sharing your thoughts about collecting and then disposing of so much fine LEGO. At some point every collection becomes overwhelming; that date was about two years ago for me when LEGO filled 3 huge rooms in our large home. Organizing and maintaining that much LEGO became overwhelming. So after six months of sorting, the sell off began. It was fun recycling sets and bins of like new bricks through younger builders who had instant use for those long stored pieces and built modulars. With the LEGO being down to one bedroom size, it makes the remaining fourth more accessible and easier to enjoy. Most of us tire of themes we adored years ago, and forget about them as life continues.
The resulting funds have been used for family travel and to help the next generation move forward. (It is a joy building Duplo with my two year old grandchild!) While it has required an enormous amount of work, I don't regret selling off the 3/4 no longer used or appreciated and certainly do not wish for my family to have to clear out my collection when I am gone in 20-30 years.
The easiest way to approach this dilemma is to ask yourself which LEGO do you no longer use or bring you the least joy. There will be someone somewhere who just can't live without those sets. The two downsizing books of Marie Kondo can walk you through this decision. Good luck with scaling back; it could fill you with relief if done well.

@legogal -- thanks for the thoughts.  It's been an interesting journey, but for me, it's well past time to step out and into other things.  I'm down to 44 sets housed in three display cases.  The end of May ended up being pretty good with sales (I broke down and listed everything on eBay, so most of the May sales happened there), so hopefully that continues into June.

Good luck, Todd. That is an impressive job you have done disposing of such a massive and rich collection. I hope that you were rewarded well for being so patient in its sale. This shows that it can be done. Over one's life, a person should have many hobbies, not just one. Sounds like you are well on your way to a full life. Thanks for sharing your move.

    Hi Todd.
Impressive quality - everything kept pristine!
Just a question: you have kept the unique polybags, e.g. for Studio sets. How did you open the bags to avoid the foil to split afterwards?
    BR Bo
  • ToddMyersToddMyers Cincinnati, OHMember Posts: 403
@bok2 - I never did find a really satisfactory way to open polybags, and some unfortunately got a bit mangled in the process of opening them. In hindsight, I probably could have / should have used some type of x-acto knife to neatly slice into the bags.

I posted this in a BrickLink forum post, and I thought I would toss out the same idea here.  If you have picked up the new Saturn V rocket, a cool companion piece would be the 2003 Lunar Lander (#10029).  That just happens to be on of the sets I have left.  Mine was built once from a sealed set and is in excellent condition.

Asking $350, free domestic shipping.  Send me a PM if you are interested!

Also, if there are any architecture fans out there, I am offering up both the Architecture Studio Set and the Architecture Visual Guide book for $150.  The box for the Studio set has been opened (so I could look at the book), but the pieces inside remain untouched and sealed.  I flipped through the Visual Guide once, so it's like new.  Retail cost for both is $200.

At $150, I don't think I can offer free shipping on this, but I may be able to subsidize a portion of the shipping costs.  Again, send me a PM if you are interested.

I'm counting today as the official 2-year anniversary of my decision to sell off my collection.  I started with about 650 sets built and displayed, and I'm now down to about 25 sets.  As I anticipated, the sale of my final sets is going excruciatingly slowly.  I know that many of my remaining sets are not high demand, and I know that my pricing is not bargain basement, so I'm just gonna sit and wait for the right buyer to find me.  Between here, BrickLink, eBay and Craigslist, I'm hoping that the fall and holiday season will bring an uptick in sales of my few remaining sets.

Reasonable offers are welcome, and I may be able to offer free or discounted shipping.  I can also offer a 10% discount if multiple sets are purchased. Send me a private message if you are interested in anything.  Also, if you are near Cincinnati (Dayton, Columbus, Indianapolis, Lexington, Louisville), I may be able to meet up half way for a decent sale.

As I posted in another thread, I picked up the Saturn V rocket and am offering it as a bundle with my 10029 Lunar Lander for $500 (the Saturn V rocket is still sealed):

    http://bricksetforum.com/discussion/27120/fs-usa-2017-saturn-v-rocket-2003-lunar-lander#latest

I also now have two additional small sets for sale:

    5004933 - Build to Learn Pack: $2.50
    5004936 - Iconic Cave: $7.50

I still have the sets and empty boxes listed in the two posts above.  Also, if anyone is interested in bundling the 21050 Architecture Studio with the Architecture Visual Guide book, I can do $150 for both of those (25% off retail price).

Incredible collection! I hope you'll be able to sell them in fair price that it deserves. It's value could increase overtime. Good luck!

Thanks @Lexcortin -- I've already sold off about 625 sets, only about 25 more to go!
