US May 4 LEGO Store Promotions

Does any one know if the US LEGO stores are doing a special VIP event for May 4th like last year with the asteroid field set?

I have heard of nothing. Rumor is they didn't like some of the sets being put on eBay hours after the event and said no more.

That happens every year with employees Christmas gift so I don't know why the asteroid field set would have upset them.

I heard it was one guy selling 4 sets on ebay before/during the event that did it. But who knows the real reason?

And considering the amount of pre sales on eBay for convention exclusives I can't see this theory holding any water.

I haven't heard anything about the US getting any 40% off sales items either, like the ones starting this coming Saturday in Europe & the UK.

it's not like this was some new or unusual occurrence.  Every limited/exclusive/freebie release LEGO set ends up on eBay immediately.  All of them. It seems impossible to believe that LEGO is bothered by THIS ONE and not the dozens of others that occur every year.  But they certainly wouldn't be above using that as a convenient scapegoat/excuse as to why they aren't brining a popular concept back

It may not be LEGO. It could be Disney that is pissed. The Space Slug set was their idea, and they are the ones who dictated the rules. Remember how all sets not given away had to be returned? That was Disney, not LEGO, that made that demand.

The landspeeder is on backorder so that would make that 40% deal kind of suck

If they are doing one this year again, they are not reaching out directly to LUGs about helping to make the invite list.
  • Russell844Russell844 Member Posts: 2,417
I asked on the Ambassador forum and LEGO said they do not know of an event happening this year.

    Just spitballing...
2010 Celebration - SW Cubedudes set
    2012 Celebration - Slave 1 set
2015 Celebration - Lars Homestead set
    2016 Celebration - some posters
2017 Celebration - Detention block set

    2014 May 4th - Revan Poly
    2015 May 4th - Yularan Poly
    2016 May 4th - Asteroid escape set
    2017 May 4th - R2 Poly

maybe be the only reason there was as Exclusive May 4th set last year was because it wasn't ready for Celebration? - might also explain why dodgy posters were the exclusive for Celebration last year?
Certainly Im no expert on exclusive sets (as the obvious gaps probably show) but as I said... Just spitballing.

    ^ That's a reasonable explanation, actually.
It would have made more sense to hold off on the Asteroid Escape Set for SW 40th though.

@MAGNINOMINISUMBRA the only problem is that the space slug set was a special event before the store opened. The 2016 polybag was the First Order Stormtooper.

@77ncaachamps only problem with that is the space slug is from ESB, and it's 40th anniversary is in 2020.

My comment was based on memory of the massive amount of bitching that there wasn't an exclusive Celebration set last year.  Then the Space Slug set appeared a fortnight later as a May 4th store exclusive for invited LUG members?  (Which I found weird at the time).  Now that you've posted about the First Order Stormtrooper Poly... Wasn't there a whole pile of bitching about that as well based on its LACK of exclusivity?  Now I'm wondering EVEN MORE if the Space Slug wasn't originally supposed to be the Celebration set that was repurposed for the giveaway?  Did Celebration 11, 13 & 14 have exclusives?

Here is the word from LEGO:

Hi All! The Space Slug was certainly an awesome exclusive VIP event and I was so thankful that LBR ran a promotion for the community like this. Unfortunately for this year's May the 4th there will be no exclusive VIP event for fans. The current promotion for all consumers in the US that will be running from May 4-7th is Double VIP Points on all LEGO Star Wars items as well as access to select sale items.

While I will miss the special May the 4th minifigs, I am definitely looking forward to this year's R2-D2 set. My biggest problem with these promotions is finding $50 worth of Star Wars sets I am interested in purchasing with all the re-releases, re-re-releases, etc.

Force Awakens, Rebels and Rogue One it is!

Are we getting the same promo as Europe then?

There are always some sets on sale for May the 4th, right? I would love to pick up Slave I finally, but I have a feeling my budget will probably hold me to something like the new Y-Wing.

Ugh. Bracing myself for the worst. I usually avoid these promotions based on what I've seen countless people agonize over time and time again, but this year, there are actually a few Star Wars sets that I really want to get that I've put off for far too long. That, and the R2-D2 does look rather nifty. Hopefully the items I've put in my bag have a little more going for them than double VIP points.

As long as 75165 Imperial Trooper BP is one of the "sale items," me happy :)

FBTB.net posted a nice review of the R2 freebie.  It's pretty darn sweet!!!

I wish they would at least let us know which sets will be on sale like they did for Europe so we could plan accordingly.  Ridiculous.

Do we even know if the sales will start at midnight or some other random time tomorrow morning?

I'd prefer to sleep if it's not at 12 AM.

@MegtheCat Yes the sale starts at midnight eastern time zone. When LEGO Website will publish them and work properly is anyone's guess. Also see Bumblepants post above yours as it is pretty accurate as what will go on.

I can't believe we have not heard a peep yet on any of these "sales".  I do recall last year that we did not hear anything until the last minute as well, though it seemed we at least had something to go on.

I'm expecting 20% off selected sets, I.E. the ones that are slow sellers. Long gone are the days of 50% USC B-wings!
  • Russell844Russell844 Member Posts: 2,417

This doesn't give any new details, but I thought it was worth sharing.

I don't know - LEGO likely needs to unload more TIEs and Hoths. That ain't happening at full price.

Krennic's Shuttle is at $71.99, but I'll be getting it from elsewhere. Too bad on the AT-TE for Captain Rex...I thought for sure that would be one of the discounted ones.

Just put my order through no problems.  Bought the Rebel Combat Frigate.  On sale for $87.99.  Good deal.

Store is updated now.  Can buy the UCS Snow Speeder and showing double VIP points. Showing the R2 in my bag as well.

Problem is, I want to go to the Lego store here in Michigan tomorrow morning to buy it so I have it for this weekend, but I don't want them to not have it.

Looks like a lot of people had the A-Wing in their cart like I did.  that set is temporarily unavailable now
