How do you display minifigs?

I'm designing a big new display for my minifigs, currently I have four RIBBA frames but it's so inconvenient to change/move them. This is the design I'm thinking off, have to work a bit more on it and then hopefully build it over the coming weeks. In the overview picture you can see a minifigure size block in the bottom right. It should house around 300-350 minifigs when done. Total size is about 1meter x 1 meter

^ Any idea what your overall weight will be on this? It would of course depend on your material, but with 11 shelves at 1 meter each, plus the frame, plates, and figs (a nominal weight usually...but 300 of which might add up), it could be a beefy project.

Nothing wrong with that of course! Just make sure you attach it to a wall stud!

Yes I have thought about that, I've made one prototype shelf out of some oak I had lying around and that alone is easily a kilo meaning the whole project is likely to be between 15-20 kg. My idea is to have some sort of support to the floor. Could be placing a white sheet of MDF that will then take the majority of the weight. Also not sure yet about the type of wood I'll use for the unit, maybe something lighter.

Very similiar to Ayrow Studios excellent work on custom minifig display cabinets.  It's a shame shipping costs are so high otherwise I'd be buying one myself.

After I buy a router/router table I am hoping to make my own frames
  • MaffyDMaffyD Member Posts: 3,535
^ Why would you put a router on a table? Normally you put them under a table, out of sight - unless you need to see the Wi-Fi light.

Actually, what does a router have to do with wooden frames... Oh... Carry on :-)

    Couldn't help it. Sorry!

Regarding the shot glass displays, can it hold the Medusa figure from CMF?
  • DrmnezDrmnez Member Posts: 855
Yes under table. Very versatile tool for frames

@madforLEGO if you're talking about the one from Michael's yes, but it fits on an angle with the base sideways.

Just picked this up from the Glasgow Lego Store -

I had to improvise with the flippers on vacation batman as well as putting a minifig baseplate under orca due to the fin being too big.
What parts are used for the to stand on?

I like using the new "ink bottle" piece to hold up the fins undernearth the feet.

I think they are black, but they might be very very dark grey.

^ Hahaha, I wondered who would do that.

It reads, "You're pretty much my most favorite of all time in the history of forever"

    Your brain my rest now.

Oh the humanity seeing DC and Marvel together in the same cases up above!!

Looks good everyone. There is a lot of inspiration on this board. I should really dedicate some time to doing something like this.

You just need to give it some healthy shaking to see the other 80%, 20% at a time.

Here's my minifigure collection - I finally got around to framing them. 391 ... so far.

I remember when the collectible minifigures first came out, and I said to myself "Who would pay £2.50 for a little plastic figure!?" That was before my girlfriend bought me a handful one Christmas and got me hooked in. What a fool I was!

It's B-E-A-utiful...i take it that is all 16 series plus others?
  • inklingbricksinklingbricks Member Posts: 80
Thank you! It's close to being all the CMF series - there are about twenty that I still need to get (mainly the early series). And yes, it's mixed in with a bunch of Dimensions, Star Wars, Superhero, and other IP minifigures. 9 more and I can get the next frame up!

What do you use mouse? That looks really good. Where do you get your frame and what not.
  • inklingbricksinklingbricks Member Posts: 80
Thanks Boomstick, it's the IKEA 50x50 Ribba frames, which I've seen lots of other people using too. The advice I saw was to glue the 2x2 bricks onto the board, but they kept falling off no matter which glue I used so I ended up drilling through the board and the bricks and screwing them in place, which is a lot sturdier.

Tempted to get one without baseplates, and order a load in different colours from PAB for the different series.

How do you ensure the blocks are all lined up nicely? Any tips?

Absolutely - because I knew I needed to make eight frames, I got an extra piece of board to use as a template. I was able to measure and draw out the locations of the screw holes, just drawing pencils marks straight onto it, and then drilled through where the holes needed to be. I could then overlay it onto all of the backing boards one at a time as a guide.

That sounds far too much hard work..either that or i am astonishingly lazy....who knows!

Thanks for the info. In my Ribba frames i have made an internal frame using lego, but it adds a lot of weight!

@ditchorama Did you make/print that back image yourself? That's amazing!!

And if my local Walmart is any indication, you won't have to wait until May 1! :)

@Stvoyager04 - what did you use? It looks really clean and organized. I may have to borrow that idea. Although I want some sort of front on mine, it doesn't look like yours has a covering on front.

Where do you get the back ground pictures from?

It's just wood, felt, varnish, glue and a bunch of 1x2 plates nothing particularly complex. With the exception of the large piece of wood for the back, which was cut by the hardware store when i purchased it, the rest was crafted on a bedroom floor.

I did briefly think about a cover but didn't want to make it too heavy so opted against it.

This blog has backgrounds for all CMF Series - a little photoshopping is required to remove their logo etc http://www.pointbrick.com/blog/

It may just be me but why is Bizarro in the villains for DC but Batzarro isn't?

I do the same with my collection. For me it's that Bizarro is a fully-fleshed out character while Batzarro is more just like a Batman variant (And fits perfectly with the Bat suits).
