A little unsure of all the secrecy to be honest..

looks like they should have chosen either rocket boy or retro spaceman as the mistery figure

It is just bizarre that TLG would print a silhouette for the Highwayman.
Maybe they had not finalised the printing of the CMF before the set had to be produced?

Or maybe they wanted to hide the torso print and other details from Chinese cloners.

That's one theory I've heard. Sounds plausible but unlikely to me.

I still think it's just that the mystery figure setup is used with other blind bag toys and LEGO wanted to see if it works for them

Nah, they finalize these at least a year in advance... maybe even more!

I find that unlikely, yeah, cause even if the image wasn't out they'd still copy it when the minifigure was found publicly

I imagine that most kids won't look up the image online, so they will want to know what the mystery figure looks like. That will cause them to buy more.

At the small toy store where I work, the vast majority of CMF's are bought as additional items by parents that impulsively buy them when their kids see them at the register. Most don't even know what figures are in the current series, even though the box very clearly shows all of them.

Sounds like a solid plan by TLG to me.

That highwayman needs a Hunter's Axe! Maybe a Whirligig Saw, or a Church Pick.

You might want to let an admin know you've posted that @icey117, think it might go against the confidentiality agreements Brickset has with TLG.

I don't think it's really leaked because this was publicly purchased at a LEGO Store in Billund. Why would they have them out?

@Huw already said he wasn't at liberty to reveal it so having it on the forum he created is probably not the best move.

^^ Its up to Huw whether he wants to resect the Lego companies wishes by not posting it on the front page but to say people cant post a picture of something you can buy in a shop on the forum is going way too far.

I think Lego have been too controlling over things like this recently and its not good for the AFOL community.

I can't see any reason for the secrecy.  It could have been any of the others and been just as much of a reveal.  Completely pointless.

The way I read it was it was an agreement to not post pics until the OFFICIAL release date (May 1).  This was why I didn't (and pretty sure a few other users made that same decision).
I have to agree with others that there were better figs in the series suited to be a mystery fig, but, that said, I personally find this fig to be the second most 'sinister' CMF ever released (after the Mobster).  Maybe they thought he just looked too damn scary on the side of the box next to Butterfly Girl and Corncob Guy?

^ Surly the tarot card reader is the most subversive, if it had been blacked out would the entertainer have stocked it?

I think that was just for the reviews since Brickset, EB, and BB got them early

The Entertainer is the UK store that is owned by fundamentalist Christians that won't sell any magic/ sorcery type stuff isn't it?
I guess subversive is a point of everyone's personal opinion - personally found nothing subversive about the fortune teller (but then again I'm not a fundamentalist Christian).  At base value you 'could' argue that the Pig Suit Guy could be considered incredibly offensive to Muslims (though none of the few Muslims I know have ever said it to be!) I don't believe that TLG would ever actually produce a TRULY subversive figure.

Drat, and to think I was hoping for the reveal of an "Assassin's Creed" tie-in with the "mystery character" being Haytham Kenway. But now it seems it seems it was just an ordinary highwayman, likely named "Arty" Hype. C'mon Lego.

Like everyone else, I don't understand the reasoning behind having the mystery figure, but I do like the figure itself. Will have to add a highway robbery moc to my list of mocs I want to make. He will also fit into pirate mocs too (pirates don't all have to have stripy shirts)
  • josekaleljosekalel Member Posts: 683
It was a failed marketing ploy by TLG...now, if they had added a 17th CMF and said there would be one per box, and it came out to be some cool minifigure, it would have been a different thing.

One thing that I have been learning after S16, Disney, and TLBM, is that I actually do not need to buy several of the same, unless I'm planning to do a band like the mariachi.

The series hasn't even been released yet, don't ALREADY assume it was a fail because they still have yet to see if it worked.

Speaking of release, has anyone seen these in the wild yet? Should be soon.

I was surprised to see the distribution of highwayman means he is one of the more common figs. I was expecting just 1 per box. At least it makes things less complicated to those on here who split a box. They won't need to fight for who gets it.

All I know is I already pre-ordered a set and have pretty much mapped out which ones I want extras of when I do see them in the store.

I like this a lot; it'll go well in various MOCs, and it just feels like it's about time we had a highwayman...

I'm sorry I can't be an apologist like many here, but I stand with what I said and would only add what @eggshen mentioned, that the marketing ploy was aimed at kids. I honestly do not think this type of ploys work anymore, especially with a CMF that is not rare in the box...It's a nice CMF, but nothing out of the ordinary (like many others in the series).

Id rather have an 'ordinary' chase figure than an impossibly hard to find and expensive Mr Gold 2.0

Found a box at Wal-Mart today. Saw a man feeling the packets, but overall it looked fairly unmolested. I randomly grabbed a bulky looking packet and got Corn Cob Guy - it is super-easy to feel the kernels of corn through the bag.

Highwayman reminds me of the movie Le Pacte des Loups or http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237534/

Also, it's not really a mystery if you can feel for it.
