I can only speak for myself of course, but the set is ugly. I think that may account for a lot of the moaning. I realize that not everyone feels that way, but to ignore that the set is a bit on the ugly side is probably deceiving ones self. To put it simply, most people want stuff that looks attractive, not ugly!
What do people want? Ideally, I would have liked a set commensurate in scale with the Imperial Flagship #10210, with a little more flare. They could have charged $300, $400, I really wouldn't have cared as long as it were cool-looking.
It is a shame they are not doing smaller support sets, they have always been great for greys and browns and tans. Even for non-fans of the franchise.
in the case of POTC I think it's had it's day a bit, it's possible that this film will refresh the franchise and the next film could see a full wave but I doubt it.
Again, deferring to the Lego marketing machine, there appears to be a much larger market for SuperHero Girls, Friends, Ninjago and Nexo Knights. (Or even Angry Birds and Scooby-Doo.)
Is it bad I am also beginning to doubt we'll see the traditional Castle, Pirate and Space themes anytime in the future as well.
The previous few return to Space themes not related to a licensed figure seem to have done fairly decently, but they did also hang around a lot longer for Galaxy Squad and Alien Conquest almost seemed to be reduced in numbers since it wasn't around that long and vanished relatively quickly.
I think the days of Castle, Pirates and Space may be all but extinct in this modern era of Licensed, Licensed and more Licensed as well as LEGOs big IPs like Ninjago, Nexo Knights and all the mini-doll lines.
I'm amazed City is still such a strong contender, there was a time in the early 2000's that City wasn't as fresh or as numerous, LEGO City at Toy's-R-Us has an entire wall dedicated it, but that wasn't always the case.
The problem with the 2015 wave wasthey made the Pirate Ship the "Flagship" set. I really like TBB, but Lego NEEDS to make a ship that size the 2nd best set, not the best. They also need to look past the fort sets. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE fort sets, but let's be honest here, people want SHIPS from pirates, not forts. 2 small fort sets (pirates and imperial) is all you need, make the SHIPS the focus. 1 ship per wave is simply NOT good enough.
Are most kids going recieve a $200 Imperial ship for Christmas, etc? No. But they WILL get the $100 pirate ship, along with the forts. The adults, and LUCKY kids will get the big ship. Which Lego clearly likes to make sets for this audience, hence the GB firehouse, Disney castle, UCS SW sets, etc.
Thats just how things are now. It's not the 80s anymore. Kids don't like pirates as much. I would not expect another try for a few years.
There might be a lot of nostalgia for Pirates, with this and other forums acting as an echo chamber. Actual demand from the hordes of kids that are TGL's main customers: not so much it seems.
Oh. Look what they made.....
It's different enough to be interesting to non pirates fans and the build looks like it could be a lot of fun.
This might sound weird but it's one of those sets that, in my head at least, I can picture it being placed in a roaring sea of lego plates to show it off at it's best.
As a side note, I also really liked the Sea Cow because it was totally different, but missed out on it as it was in my early days of collecting and have been kicking myself ever since.
I will not be making the same mistake again.
I don't think there's nearly the demand we (meaning small few collectors) think there is. I love Pirate Ships. I would by up every one that was made if Lego made them. But not everyone would. A majority wouldn't actually I suspect. Pirates, Space, Castle and the like were all popular back in the day because that's all Lego had. With licensed sets, you don't hardly have to advertise the sets and you know there will be an automatic fan base. Pirates just isn't as popular anymore. Lego knows this, and their recent outing not performing well confirmed this.
I know we all would like to believe it, but us shouting and yelling on these forums about how much we love a certain theme doesn't mean that's what the Lego fan base in general wants or would support. Vocal minority, silent majority is the case.

No box.. oddly enough. I really wanna see the box. If I find it I'll share.
Unknown play lay feature or simply some extra greebling?
It's a jab at the fans who wanted a re-release of TBP ;)
At the same time, the Imperial Flagship set the bar really high but I think having this ship not to far from it would look cool in a display.
Liked the first film, second was alright but the sort of hollow lead-in/sequelbait I hate about my industry, and the third was spectacle that dragged yet wowed me for the 3 hours I had buttered popcorn and air conditioning and I haven't seen since. I enjoyed the fourth film for keeping it as simple as the first. I like pirates, I like fantasy, boom.
I missed the prior sets as I was not drawn back into LEGO just then, and I kick myself every day if only because I want that Penelope Cruz minifig.
That laid out, for everyone who has wondered "Who would want this set?" "Who would pay full price?" "I can't imagine anyone displaying this...", I am the one you may persecute. Prosecute. Crucify.
Keelhaul and quarter me and make me walk the plank. I want it!
It's a ghost pirate ship! LEGO Pirates and Castles were my domain in the late 80s, and I was the right age and apt pupil and model child to weasel every set I could. I did miss the first PotC offerings, but I'm not going to look this gift in the mouth.
Ghost. Pirate ship! So cool! And it has a unique design for one. It looks creepy in the trailers and it looks about as good as I could hope a LEGO recreation to get. I know nothing about the new film except there's more ghost pirates and this ship writhes and thrashes like a sandworm on Arrakis.
Sure, the stands do look dumb, but I just prop these things on shelves around my office and rotate one on my desk to play with. I can live with the stands.
I'd buy this even if it was just a generic Pirate set. Look at those minifigs!
The pirate with the ghost bottom from the CMF Banshee (Correct me, I'm sure it predates that) is inspired, and the guy with the clear leg looks neat. And the few with the clear heads and face printing. That's such a cool design.
And then Karina actually looks like actress Kaya Scodelario. At first I thought "Eh, it's just a generic female", but on closer inspection they captured Kaya's trademark rogueish smirk and spattered the face with freckles. To me, it looks like Kaya, and that's another cool thing, because...well, because I'm odd, and I like to collect minifigs of actors and actresses because, come on, when did I ever think I'd have a ScarJo or Felicity Jones LEGO minifig? Never!
I apologize to all the Pirate purists in this thread. I am saddened we didn't get another line and another shot at other ships. I am not saddened that if we got one, this is the set that was fit to print. I am beyond excited for it and even rebudgeted my fun money for this (sorry, real life social life).
Oh, and one other thing sucks aside from those stands for it -
Where did the zombie shark go? I know I saw that leaked.
Availability online at S@H: March 2014 - Oct 2015.
I wouldn't say that it sold out in a couple of months, or that it was worth a fortune now.
Tumber: available for over a year, gone from $200 RRP to about $250 BL 6 month ave. SO some increase, but only 25%. Plus it is Batman. That is the story here, it is Batman, not that it was a limited D2C set.
I won't judge the set without seeing the movie or the set personally. But I am curious why there is not even one other set piece from the whole movie. Then again, Ant-Man and Dr. Strange only rated one set per film also. I guess I wonder how they decide this question.
Lone Ranger suffered from this, practically every set had both him and Tonto. The minor characters might be interesting but I'm guessing they won't sell sets. And in an IP based line, the characters will be the main draw unless the vehicle or building is totally iconic.
Myself, from the bottom and lower angles .. I see a mashup, a centipede with Capn Rex's AT-TE legs .
I'm not entirely convinced with the top either. I think a hull could have been added and it'd still retain the eerie ghost ship look.
