@legobod do you  mean white dwarf ? Or am I missing something ?
  • legobodlegobod Member Posts: 332
^ Red Dwarf the UK sci-fi comedy series. Think a set reached the 10,000 votes on the Ideas site but I can't see them producing it since it's probably not very well known outside of the UK and a small US following.
They tried to do an American remake of it years ago but messed it up by making big changes

Unlike some of the past series I can see duplicates being pretty sought after for rare parts and MOC fans. The downside is their being priced the same as The LEGO Batman Movie series, that new 5$ CND a piece for a Minifigure, is a bit pricy.
Do we know for a fact they are $5 each? I was hoping they would go back to $4. I really like the new series, but at that price, I'm out.
From all that was said about the LBM CMFs, that price increase was just for that series, due to licencing rights...

That's from TLG's press conference at the recent Nürnberg Toy Fair, by their Marketing VP, Joanna Katharina Lazar-Stumpf. So I'd not only call that true, but official.

Also known to every sci-fi fan in Australia... Many of us snicker when people mention wanting to buy Smeg ovens. :)

Could that just be for Germany? Hate to say it, but if the price for the LBM CMFs (AU$5.99) is the new pricing for all CMFs in Australia too, I can see them losing popularity fast, most were unhappy with the fact that CMFs here were a bit pricier than overseas at AU$4.99 each & have been for quite some time now. People here really kicked up a stink about the price gouge on the LBM CMFs, but most quietened down once the word was put out there it was just for the LBM ones.
  • stluxstlux Member Posts: 2,450
That will then at least be Europe, not just Germany. I can't imagine CMF's being more expensive in Germany than elsewhere in Europe; Germany is usually priced below the other Euro countries...
The press conference was aimed at the Central European market, however listening back to it (from 07:12 - this part is without the voice-over), she does not specify this market in her answer.

With the higher price of the TLBM CMF's carrying over in future series, at least here in Europe, I'd sort the same not happening elsewhere in the "wishful thinking" tray. Yay for everyone else of course in case I'm wrong ;)

@stlux the last few regular CMF series hung around for quite a while compared to series 11/12, I know a fair few people who bought less of series 13/14/15/16 because of a lack discounts, less interest in the characters (a lot of claims "too many rehashes"). Uping the price could really kill interest in them, I know one fellow AFOL I bumped into in a Myer store refused to fork out out for the LBM series, saying it's too much, if they're going to start asking for that kind of money, they need to get their shit together & offer SW & proper SH CMF series. When I asked him what he meant, he pointed to the Mixels packets & said something like that or the polybags, CMFs with a decent build in each packet.

Yet the same people bought them, on day 1 too. It seems people will pay what LEGO ask when it comes to CMF. LEGO know that.
  • fourstudfourstud Member Posts: 1,370
Yeah CMFs went up in price over there starting with Batman. It will be like that from now on.
  • msandersmsanders Member Posts: 1,017
In Switzerland the minifigures price went from 3.49 CHF to 4.95 CHF for the batman minifigures. That's a crazy increase in price and I won't be buying standard minifigures at that price. Toys r us here still have Simpsons series 2, Halloween CMF series and series 16 available  (lots of these) all at 2.95 CHF and they aren't selling.

& yet there were also plenty who said, enough is enough & chose not to purchase. As with any item out there on the market right now, there is a price point where the majority will refuse to pay & at that point, the product becomes unprofitable. Some of the reactions I've seen & heard about of late to TLG's recent price changes tells me that TLG is verging on a tipping point for a lot of current customers.
  • mmozzanommozzano Member Posts: 417
I for one didn't buy a full set if Batman figs solely due to the price increase, I just picked up the couple I liked. I'll be doing the same here, just planning on picking up the Corn Guy and Rocket Boy and perhaps one or two more when I get a better look.
  • josekaleljosekalel Member Posts: 683
I will do what I did with TLBM series, buy a whole set (two, maybe?) from @MinifiguresPlus and get spares from Target/Walmart so that I can add them to my Town. For whatever the photo shows, most of the figures look interesting enough.

As for the price...I honestly would not price these anything over $3.00, considering you get a better deal with polybags or starter sets (which usually have FOUR minifigures, and even small vehicles, for under $10). I completely understand that these are 'collector's items' and that they make a certain number, costs, and whatnot...but I do not feel they're worth $4.00.

Honestly, maybe TLG should start labeling the CMFs bags, that way people are more enticed to buy them since they would know what they are gonna get. And yes, they can do research to see which figures would sell the most, it's not like they can't do market research.

Sure, some people will always drop out with such a price rise. The same was said when they went from £2.00 to £2.49 in the UK. I remember getting loads from WHS on their privilege scheme, worked out about £1.20 each. Series 6, I got two boxes at 50p per figure. Those type of prices stick in the mind and I stopped buying complete sets at £2.49 a figure. In fact, I went back and sold a load of my earlier ones when it was clear some people were willing to pay £12-15 a piece for things I had paid a quid for.

The appears to be two extreme types of collectors for CMF, with variations in between. Some people will buy full sets / boxes at rrp on release. Others will wait for a discount. But even those that wait for a discount seem to crack at a higher price point than the old series used to be. Lego can milk the "must have" collectors and still the others will buy at say £2 on sale instead of £3.

Every series, there are people paying at least 2x rrp for some of the figures when still current in stores, and I have no doubt that the secondary prices paid have helped Lego internally justify price increases.

I'll pay the current price for licenced CMF, as it's reasonable to assume the licence costs something, especially with say Disney that is clearly a company with more clout than Lego But for standard CMFs I am seriously questioning the new price.
  • CircleKCircleK Member Posts: 1,055
I hate even saying this, but CMF sell out pretty damn fast at their current RRP in my area. I could actually see them selling just fine at $5.

That would absolutely be end game for me though. I'm already disgusted with myself for paying the current price for a CMF - licensed or not.

Hmmm. Not impressed. I could see it going either way, but logically there must be a ceiling where they have to stop increasing the price, or else beef up the content - as someone said earlier, they're meant to be an impulse treat-yourself thing.

It's like with magazines - when some of them started going over a fiver I had to bow out. And I used to freelance; I respect that writers need paying and that the magazine market is a tough place right now (see "used to"). But that doesn't magically make my income bigger. So when the more specialist magazines got pricier, I started looking for smaller treats - and buying CMFs more often.

I think my collection stats on recent series tell their own tale:

    Series 14: 17 minfigs
Series 15: 8 minifigs (shops near me kept running out)
    Series 16: 14 minifigs
    TLBM: 2 minifigs

^ great point on magazines. I used to buy gaming magazines all the time, then they went to £5 and £5.99 and it just felt like they were taking the mickey, so I hardly ever buy them anymore.

@richo Gaming magazines are exactly what I was thinking of. I used to love EDGE in particular, but I just can't justify it anymore.

I'm not so sure they are meant to be that. They are different things to different people. It is quite rare to see someone purchasing a single one. I regularly see people buying multiples though.

Agreed, I was talking about Edge too! It makes me wonder if a £3-4 price point would bring in more revenue than £5.

    Edit,
I just checked, current cover price £5.50, up another 10%!

Magazines isn't a perfect comparison, because with magazines you can generally find the same or very similar content online, for free. But there is the danger, as people mention, that the price creep will take CMF from 'impulse' category to something you weigh up against other LEGO that will offer much better value. The thing that put it into perspective for me was that there were always, say, 2-3 minifigs per series that I was lukewarm about, but was getting them just to complete the line. Multiply that by 16 series and it's in the region of 40-50 minifigs that I didn't really want. Even taking an average of £2, which they haven't been for a few years, that is £100, or more than halfway towards a modular or a UCS.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
^ And they knew that, back at series 1. It is why they put numbers on bags, they know people will want to collect them all, as a collectable.

They have done exactly the same trick with the brickheadz. There is no reason at all to number these as a series if they were just toys (they don't with normal sets, they have a less obvious set number), yet they do it as they know it appeals to collectors, many of whom will feel the need to buy them all. They have done it with Friends animals, Mixels, etc. Putting a consecutive number on an item turns it from being a small toy into a collectable.

Even though these CMFs are indeed collectable, I will not buy them at 3.99 Euro. Not one of them.

The old price of 2.99 Euro seemed steep already, especially when compared to Mixels or polybags at 3.99 Euro or starter sets at prices below 10 Euro. But an additional 33% price increase brings it to totally beyond acceptable imho.

And it's already noticable with the LBM CMF series which I have not once seen anyone buy in the toy stores I frequently visit. I even asked a store person I know, and she said they sell hardly any of them and are already thinking about marking them down in order to clear the shelf space.

^ Yet enough people are buying them not to change LEGO's mind about pricing. You only need to look in the marketplace here, on ebay, on bricklink, people have been buying in a RRP. I don't think lego cares about individual consumers - for every one that drops out there is another ready to buy.  Lego cares about sales only. So long as enough people are buying, the others don't matter.

A particular store might find that they are not selling them, and might be forced to reduce prices to shift them. I imagine that this store will eventually decide not to stock any CMF in future.

This is a great point. Also, if you're not running a BL store, trading or selling them just becomes more admin. I can see why so many people will only trade multiples in one transaction.

^ Worse than that, the ones you (or me or anyone here) might find less interesting are often going to be the ones most people find less interesting. They can be essentially worthless - eg. Syndrome and Mr Incredible, Wrestling Champion, Skydiver, etc.

Here in the US, I've seen TLBM CMFs for the same $3.99 price as other recent series.
Likely interested in Female Elf Warrior for my Castle scenes (I've gotten as much S15 Frightening Knight and S16 Rogue as I can find). The mystery highwayman might also fit the medieval theme. Maybe a Surfer Guy for my beach scene or Rocket Kid with my space stuff, particularly if I happen to get one while looking for others

To piggyback on @CCC, the only real adjustment we've seen over the 20+ series are the apparent production runs of the figures.

Other than the 'Too Much' of Series 3, and a few shortages in the series up to 10,  I think we can all agree that the Mr. Gold promotion worked - as the current production seems to be steady.  They are released, they sell, they retire and the cycle continues.

With the exception of the Disney series, where there was a second run in North America just before Christmas.

Not that my region is indiciative of the entire market, but there aren't gobs of these laying around at TRU.  And as I recall, only for Simpsons S2 was there a 'clearance' or sale on CMFs.

$4 is my limit on CMF's.  If they pop over that, I'm done.  I'll focus on other stuff entirely.  Unless of course the quality goes up immensely, e.g. No more Chinese crap with loose fittings, wobbly legs, and a less dense plastic feeling.

Yankee here who's aware of Red Dwarf, the library I work at has a lot of TV shows from other English speaking countries.
The figure front row second from right looks like a red dwarf, not sure how that relates to the show besides the name, but I've made a tenuous reference or two myself.

even if a particular buyer doesn't demand any at a certain price point, it can still be a logical price for the overall market.

gotta catch 'em all has bitten me in the ass, but not with CMFs, only picked up the few I want
  • sonatine01sonatine01 Member Posts: 782
^^^ Fair enough, it just reminded me of warhammer in white dwarf and thought you might have meant the same. I guess both of us liking Lego, Red Dwarf and Liverpool is enough similarities already :-) As for this series, I really like it all round.

For any Lego Marketing Person that reads this Forum -  clearly, @77ncaachamps is a crazy lunatic.  Please put the price back to $2.99.

    Thank you!
WOW. Look at all those likes to your reply, @SumoLego, screaming "RESIST!"

Truthfully, if they do it right (new characters, new parts, new colors), $5.50 is not a crazy price.

    For some of us. ;p

i guess the only way to get them down to $2.99 is just not buying them at all and wait for Target, et al to clearance them at $2.99. That'll probably happen when Series 25 rolls around.

    First, I am a grandstanding like-whore.

Second, I would be hard pressed not to continue my complete collection of CMFs and Minifigure-related things.

And if the CMFs stayed at $2.99, there would probably be shortages and we'd all be cursing about having to pay $10.00 for a Hans Moleman or Skydiver.

But... that doesn't mean we have to acknowledge the inevitable price increases.  I'm happy giving Lego spies the impression that $3.99 is a happy number.
