744 Universal Building Set Wires

Looking at Bricklink I see there's two different types of wires.  Are they interchangeable?  A friend is digging out his childhood sets and was looking for replacement wires.

There aren't really two different types of wires. The old battery box / motor used a common (interchangeable) 2-prong wire that could handle either 12v or 4.5v.

It may be that the other "wire" you're seeing is the string that's used for things like the crane model in that set.

Or you may be looking at the "alternate parts" section, which includes a version of the motor with a 3-hole connector. The original motor in the set used the 2-hole connector for the wire mentioned above.

Both motors run at 4.5v btw.

Yep, I'm looking at the alternate stuff, as that one is what's shown on the box picture for his set.  So it sounds like the regular 2-prong version will work regardless--it's more readily available on bricklink.

Errr, The three prong version is more readily available on brickset.

If I am not mistaken the three prongs will be more abundant as they are the 'newer' ones.

It depends on which motor you have...obviously if you have a motor with a 2-prong socket, you can't use the 3-prong wire :)

#744 - ah, interesting. I have one of these. Don't know if it works any more though...
