@paul_merton...my wife has done that with many of our kids favorite toys.  Although I'm sure it will be way past their 18th when they receive the boxes labeled, "rediscovery your youth"

The most thoughtful Lego gift I've ever received was was when I thoughtfully bought myself the Slave I UCS back in the spring.

But actually it was pretty thoughtful of my wife to allow me to keep it.

I'd have to say my most thoughtful gift was probably #6866 . It was a birthday present from my brother-in-law and his family. Thoughtful mostly considering how much the Deadpool is worth now :) Though I have no plans on selling it.

My mom bought me Ewok Village for Christmas last year.

Backstory:  I begged for #6285 for years and never received it.  I got mostly Tyco Blocks and other knock off brands.

Fast forward to last year and my mom harps on me for a Christmas list every year.  I'd rather she just spend money on the kids and not worry about me, but she is retiring soon and wanted to spend money on her kids while she can still afford to.  I told her any Lego set would be awesome and she got me EV.

I still haven't opened it yet, but it's probably the best Christmas gift I've ever received, second only to maybe the He-Man toys I got as a small child, specifically the one Christmas when I got Castle Greyskull and Skake Mountain in one Christmas!

Better late than never!  I still want #6285 though...

Best LEGO gifts I have received since getting back into LEGO has been when my wife will send me out for a loaf of bread or something else we don't really need and suggest that I should drop by my favorite local thrift store while I'm out.

For me, definitely the modulars my parents gave me. At first they complained at the price, but once Grand Emporium and Fire Brigade had been discontinued and I told them how much they are worth, now they have no problem buying me a modular each year for Christmas.

Maybe Battle at the Black Gate... It was my first set in a long time... I still feel excited whenever I build it...

I made that mistake and came home to find my mum laughing, shouting something about money and packing all my lego into a large box.

My wife got me framed prints of the patents for minifigures and 2x4 bricks for christmas. They're really really cool and will look great in the basement amongst all the actual Lego.

For my birthday this year, my parents surprised me with the Sanctum Santorum, which I had no idea they even knew was a thing, and the 2010 Hogwarts Express. The Sanctum is special because they know comics are my living and life, but the Hogwarts Express was solely because my mom remembered Ginny and Luna were my favourite Harry Potter characters when she found this set cheap at a mom and pop.

But, by far, the most thoughtful Lego gift came from a super secret Santa from this very forum. A custom made set which is set in a similar setting to where I work and, incorporates one of my Lego loves, monster fighters.

Its called "Fun in the Derelict Park...
You work in a derelict park? Sheesh...

^^ I did say similar. My park isn't derelict, but you do get the odd zombie.
