My pre-ordered Marceline has the blank tag. That's a bummer, but it's not like I have time to play the game right now, so we'll see what customer service can do.
Forgot to buy that exclusive for my GF, but as it turns out if they are all wonky anyway I saved her from an errand.

Marceline not working is a shame....she has more skills than any character released to date.
  • ClutchPowerClutchPower Member Posts: 220
@dannyrww, I also own a Wii U but not sure if you have this problem. See, on the joystick, whenever I try to aim at something (like a slingshot,) it goes into the opposite direction. I tried this with other LEGO games, but did not have this problem. Do you know anyway to fix it?

Marceline doesn't work??? :( I assume the "blank tag" I keep reading about is the access info on the disc. So... nothing I bought for my son is opened or operational yet, cuz it's not his birthday yet. :) I wonder if I can request a disc replacement without even having attempted using her yet? I've got the pack and the receipt if that's all they need a picture of... hmm. This sucks, we LOVE Adventure Time. :|

@LEGO_Dad77 - one thing I would recommend is setting up the game and installing the updates befor you wrap it. This advice was given to me by my brother about new consoles/big games as presents in general and it makes a  lot of sense. Gone are the days of plug in and play, so makes for a more enjoyable birthday/Christmas if they can just start playing straight away

That sucks. Marceline apparently has a bad chip in most of the produced chips. So TRU pulled them from stock and are working with the manufacturer. I think you may have to contact TRU and find out how they are going to account for all of these misfires.

Also, my brother was complaining about how recent updates seemed to have messed up his game (regardless of characters), and he is on a XBox 360.. Anyone else having issues after the recent updates mucking up their game?

You are an awesome bunch, thanks for your advice. :)

Ahh..... I just can't bring myself to open my Sons new toy ahead of time. BUT, I will give him a heads up after he see's Marceline. The Boy can be very patient..... as long as he knows every teeny tiny detail beforehand and has a head start on processing negative info. XD

Like Shib I always open my sons games before birthdays and Christmas. I started doing it because I'd buy them so far in advance I wanted to still be able to get a refund if they didn't work but not having to install them on Christmas Day is a bonus too.
I'd open them and he'd never notice but the PS4 does have a 'games you've recently played' part on the screen I had to blag him on that one. Is it possible for the consoles to read the game tags through their plastic bags ? If so @LEGO_Dad77 you could just re-seal everything else and your son wouldn't even notice.

You don't need the game tags to update the game, only the disc. It is a huge amount of updating so I'd really recommend doing it - especially if you have year two sets to add,

I was going to say exactly that @Shib, but it's also something that current owners of Dimensions should be aware of, if you haven't updated in a while. Whatever way the content is added since Series 2 came out, you have to download the whole game's content again every time a new update comes out. This file is around 12GB, and I've been caught out a couple of times in the last few weeks when I wanted to turn it on and play with a new pack.

Dumb question time, I have the original dimensions starter pack and a lot of the level/team & fun packs but haven't unpacked , let alone played any of it yet (still trying to find the time to finish TFA).
When i do start playing will it be 1 massive update to the whole game or will each addituonal pack need updating when added? Just wondering whether it's worth just loading the updates now or waiting till I actually want to play the game and do it all at once?
  • obi_gobi_g Member Posts: 617
@LEGO_Dad77 any of the year one content is downloaded via the game update that happens (currently around 8-12gb update download). the year two content is a selectable update - this was done to stop people having to download content they do not have or want and want to save space on their console.

As everyone has said, install and download the updates ahead of time. this will save you massive disappointment when, you have to wait half a day for updates to download because all the new players will be all trying to install the updates. it also means you can check that it all works before giving it as a gift.

If you're really careful with the seal stickers then you can open, check character disc through the bag, then reseal with no problem at all.

one thing to keep in mind for the future as well is to make regular copies of your save game, either to the cloud or usb. mine corrupted recently and i lost a lot of hours and there's nothing that you can do except replay it.

    hope that helps :)

@bandit778 if you haven't unpacked anything yet, the first install will give you the latest version (1.15). This is around 12GB. If all your packs are Series 1, then you will be good to go when this has been downloaded.

From then on, 1) whenever a new version is released (e.g. 1.16) you will have another 11-12GB download on your hands, and/or 2) when you purchase a Series 2 pack, you will have to download an update for that particular pack's content (as @obi_g points out). This is a smaller download - can't remember what the typical size is, but it usually takes me around 30 minutes on pretty mediocre internet.

Also remember PlayStation and Xbox networks are absolutely slammed every Christmas with everyone updating software and installing stuff. If you can discreetly pop the seals, install all the system updates and download game stuff then seal it all back up, it will likely make Christmas much more fun and kids won't be able to tell the difference.

    Thanks for the info.
Should be relatively painless for the series 1 packs i have, just have to remember to do that bit the day before I play the game.
Do the story packs have the same sort of updates as series 2 packs?

Well, that's bad times. I'd heard some were blank in a blog article, but... I'm pretty disconnected, I don't watch videos, I don't check other fan sites, so I wasn't aware how widespread it was. Fingers crossed Lego Support can get it fixed up... I'm waiting to hear back myself.

I'm not sure, haven't gotten one yet. But I imagine so, just bigger than the team/level/fun packs.

There was a recent update that meant having to redownload the year 2 content. I think there was some bug fixing and character updates going on - I know supergirl finally got her ice breath, and fortunately still no annoying super music! There was also some complaints about increased save game corruption with the release of wave 6 (ghostbusters / a-team /mission impossible). I performed the updates before playing the game and was fine.

The Reddit community is quite good at pointing out problems and there's also a pretty good tracker to help with what you have and what you might need, character wise!

    Yep, I frequent r/legodimensions, it's a great resource.

On another note, I just finished the Mission: Impossible level pack, and it's my new favourite. I didn't think anything would beat Portal, but this has! And got it for £14.99 too, absolute steal (seemed to be a limited time pricing for Prime members, just checked and it's back to normal price unfortunately).

Most packs get discounted, so if it is not on discount, it likely will be during its run again (maybe for more than 50%), heck may be on discount tomorrow

Stopped by a TRU earlier and saw a lone Marceline Fun Pack on their fully stocked shelves.  I don't remember seeing it at that store yesterday so I can only assume someone returned an online order.  Hope that doesn't become an issue, where the old, non-functioning stock gets mixed in with the new, fixed ones.

Just a guess, but they likely should have some memorandum to the stores that any such returns go back to the manufacturer and not back on a shelf. I think that if you return one reporting the issue they should just replace it, or you just contact the manufacturer, as I'm guessing this will be an issue for some time.

Talked to a TRU manager who was happily I was buying Lego Dimensions starter pack.

he said he was ecstatic when he had to ship most of his toys to life figures and games to the sister store as they weren't selling.

he also mentioned that TRU told him they're all going to be gone by Spring. Product liquidation may be coming in the new year.

take it for what it's worth

I saw an ad for Toys 'R' Us on the TV just last night that actually starred the Marceline minifigure. Pretty poor choice of a spokes-minifigure in hindsight…
  • dannyrwwdannyrww Member Posts: 1,394
I would think the newer ones are selling steadily. Toys R Us around here have sold out of some sets and online has sold out of the Fantastic Beast set 3 times. I think the new series has more to offer with exclusive minifigures. I do think you can always find a sale if you look though.

For anyone doing some last minute shopping, TRU has buy 2 get 1 free fun packs, $15 off a story pack, and $20 level packs. In addition, in store they will give you a free Geffory the Giraffe set with a purchase of over $40.

I am kind of surprised that they are giving out the 40228 with a Lego Dimensions purchase, since all prior promotions did not count towards getting a free promo (A Wing Pilot, First Order General, etc).

Can't comment on it because I don't know where Lego Dimensions is going, but toy to reality games are not doing well overall. The same manager said they still had early Skylanders starter sets in stock and they kept coming out with newer sets that they were running out of shelf space. Lego at least has a larger fanbase but at some point you have to get the feeling that it's gonna end soon, especially with the discounts this past year.
  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,478
I think what we are seeing more with Dimensions (in the U.K. at least) is that the market value is behaving far more like traditional computer games than LEGO for year two content. There have been a lot of preorder deals and prices are much more reasonable than what seems inflated RRPs.

The way the packs are moving implies to me that sales are still generally good, there isn't the shortages there were last year with some of the starter packs (Wii U in particular) but it's probably much easier to get stock levels right with the expansions which are useable on all formats.

I also think that shops like Toys R Us who are not specific computer game specialists are more likely to see the negatives of DI ending and Skylanders endlessly pumping out new starter packs than the positives of each franchise.

I think that using the same starter pack for Dimensions has been  the really smart choice in developing the game, the need for a new starter pack with each new gimmick for other ttl games always looked bad in a cash grabbing way.

Good points but I think the sales are also due to unique licenses that really attracted different fan groups like Adventure Time, Sonic, Gremlins, ET, A Team, etc.

the standard Lego lines in the first wave: TLM, Chima, Ninjago were the hook for Lego fans. It's the novelty lineup of the second wave that continues to "bring them in".

The new IPs definitely bring on different groups, but this was also the case the wave 1 - also DI did similar, adding Marvel & Star Wars.

I think there's definitely been clever choice of IPs to appeal to gamers/geek culture in general.

I do believe one of the greatest strengths with the game is that it often is game parents play with their children. This Summer we watched Gremlins, ET, and Goonies after my kids saw the preview for series 2. They do pick the licenses based heavily on that idea I think. So you have people who enjoy the game buying these, people who are nostalgic, and people who collect unique minifigures (Really this year I think Harry Potter is the only set where you can get the minifigures elsewhere).

    ^Also true.

One of the biggest advantages Dimensions has over any of the other TTL games is that the toys are actually toys and not just statues. So, like all LEGO to an extent, there are different groups that they appeal to.

Minifigures is a big draw, and year 2 so far has been very interesting on that front. So far I believe that the only year 2 figure that isn't unique in some way is the Green Arrow polybag figure which I believe is the same as the one from the Darkseid invasion set. Sometimes it's a small difference (Supergirl/Harry Potter having different hair) or completely unique characters, but it really pushes the appeal for minifigure collectors.

The big downside to this though is the amount of additional characters people will want from each franchise - e.g only having one member of the A-Team or having Sonic without Taild seems a bit lacking. I suspect that the connectable sets (whatever they are) might fill out some of these rostas- the Sonic level pack definitely hints at the year two stuff joining the main storyline properly at some point in the future.

    ^HAHA!!

I love this thread... as a newbie to the game, it's especially helpful and highly entertaining! XD I am constantly left with questions however, like:

    • What are "connectables"?

    and

    • As Disney Infinity is ending (ended?), is there any reason or hope to believe that Disney/Marvel/Pixar/Muppet characters will eventually find their way into LEGO Dimensions?

The Boys birthday party is this weekend, so I'll be setting everything up.... ANNNNNND I'm taking Monday off to add more playtime. :D I can't wait to FINALLY enjoy this game and the new figures!

@LEGO_Dad77 it's been interesting to read your journey with this. Mainly because of what you mentioned to me (somewhere, no idea where) the thing about Dark Ages. My Dark Age was vast...maybe lifelong, I was only a LEGO dabbler as a kid. HUGE video gamer though, bordering on addiction. Playing LEGO Dimensions not only ended my Dark Age, it slowly shifted my focus away from games and over to LEGO as a hobby, and I haven't played a game for over four months. So much for the addiction...unless I'm addicted to LEGO now... :)

Been thinking of revisiting Dimensions for this new second wave, but a bit scared to. I was a daily gamer. Don't want to be that again. Hopefully I'll find a medium.

You and your son will have fun with it. It's a fun game...building the stuff is fun. Grinding for studs is a bit boring, but once you get certain vehicles built that are magnetized for studs it gets easier to get more studs. Studs in the game are currency to buy enhancements for your builds "in game". Stuff like missiles, skins, extra speed boosters, etc.

Some Level packs are shit. Some are downright stellar. Best level pack? Bar none it's Doctor Who from wave 1. Especially if you are a fan of DW. But the level itself is brilliantly executed. So is the Midway games level. Portal is OK, Simpsons, Ghostbusters...wow did they stink. There are tons of great websites to help you. My favorite was Kotaku just because there was a breakdown of what was NECESSARY to play the game and the figures and sets you could skip.

Saves a ton of dough. Because a lot of characters repeat powers and abilities.

i could write a lot more, but others who are way better have done it already. Have fun!

Connectable sets might be in reference to sets you plug in to the gaming console. I've always understood them to be that but I could be wrong. Or the fact that the new Story Packs have builds that rest on top of the existing LEGO Toy Pad.

Does anyone know if you can load characters such as Supergirl or Green Arrow into the game without opening the polybag?
  • VorpalRyuVorpalRyu Member Posts: 2,318
I must be one of the few on here with no interest in the game, just buying various packs for the minifigures, interesting rarer elements, etc...

As for Disney stuff in Dimensions, I strongly doubt we'll be seeing Marvel in particular, given DC is already strongly represented in the game & the two comics brands have serious rivalry. The fact that both are allowing Lego to build sets is pretty big in itself when you consider they normally use rival companies to make their merch. Add to that, that WB is the owner of TT games & DC (WB & Disney have rivalry as long & strong as DC & Marvel), it's incredible that Disney/Marvel allowed the stand alone Lego Marvel games to be made. I'm not saying it's impossible, but the probability is pretty damn close to zero, which is a shame in a way, Dimensions would be another avenue for lesser known Marvel characters to surface in minifigure form...

I could see there being a Dimensions 2.0 that would have Disney (Disney, Marvel, Star Wars....) as their own stand alone game. I think the chances of them make it into the current Dimensions as slim to none.

I don't see why not. The hardest part is making the base stay on the platform in full contact (and position) while you play.

happy to confirm that the tags read through the bags, they also read UNDER the base as well as on top. Why would you not want to take them out though? you have the problem @77ncaachamps mentions and the fact that the bags take up so much space on the portal!
