Missing pieces

boadboad Member Posts: 22
Hey guys, Bought a mini cooper creator set today and have discovered 2 missing pieces. Very small in the grand scheme of things as they were only 2 1x2 grey tiles but annoying nonetheless. Fortunately the Lego store whetebi bought the set are posting the pieces to me tonight.

Sorry meant to say the Lego store I bought them from are posting the pieces to me tonight. How common is this issue?
  • BeOBeO Member Posts: 11
Not very common in my experience, but it happens. I've had to order missing pieces 4 or 5 times since I started collecting Lego again 4 years ago.

I think I've only every come across one missing piece, a 1x2 tan tile in the Palace Cinema set.

I say *think* - there is a chance my 2 year old managed to lose it as he got to the loose pieces as I was building it, but the piece has never turned up, so I'm pretty certain it was missing.

Not too often, probably 1 in 20 sets. The worse case was Jokerland, when it was missing a large green octagonal plate and lime girder. Instead it came with an extra bag of small parts. I did not detect any tampering since the minifigures were all there. Customer service shipped the missing parts within a week.

Haha! Yes except this time the missing pieces were definitely not there!

My VW Camper had one missing piece.  That's the only one I can remember where I contacted Lego.  May have been one other set, where I dug out a piece from my spares.  That's it in the last 3-4 years.

It happens. I once was missing an entire bag of parts out of Hogwarts Express and another bag was duplicated so it was able to pass the weight test.

My VW camper had 2 missing headlight bricks.. when completing the build I saw they were not missing, but in the wrong colour. Ever since then, I often get that feeling of "oh boy , they're going to have missed a part again" only for me to find it after looking real hard.

Last week we built the Grand Emporium, and for a moment I thought "oh my god, they've put in 2 identical bags, I'm likely missing a whole bag!" but no... both sides of the building simply require the exact same parts. Derp.

The "piece in the plastic bag" issue is one I'm very aware of - I now hold up the (hopefully empty) bag to the window or lamp to make sure nothing is left in it.

^ Fair point. It's been too long for me to remember now, but that might indeed have been the case...

I bought an ECTO-1 from an official store that was missing its manual! Was able to build it from the instructions online and they sent a new one out really quickly, and the customer service assistant was friendly and helpful :-)

My UCS Slave 1 had a wrong bow piece, there were two dark red right ones and no left one, so I had to wait for Lego to send me a new piece, halting the build for over a week... :(

My ECTO-1 missed almost 90 pieces but did have one extra bag (the one with licence plates). Also missed Batman's cape in Heroes of Justice: Sky High Battle.

Missing pieces not yet (let's hope it NEVER happens)...thinking you are missing a piece but see it in another bag or the bag that you had already tossed in the trash, it happens every. single. time...Having different color pieces, just twice I think, one with the First Order Battlepack, instead of a dark grey piece it was black.

I got a cement truck years ago that, I kid you not, was missing like 15 or more pieces.

Similar thing with a slightly smaller set, #75067. Two RH wing pieces and no LH. Didnt bother calling it in though.

I once had an opportunity to grab 10 Millennium Falcon mini builds from TRU, in my haste, i forgot to grab wing plates for one side. I now have a bag of incomplete MFs. Not TLGs fault but, still a missing piece saga.

I have had more sets with additional pieces (I don't mean the usual small bits that are normal but large pieces too), but I had the WV cottage with 2 red doors instead of a fence piece. The #70815 had a partially crushed or melted shooter piece, and sleepyhead from the CMF came with two hairpieces and no head. All sorted by Lego apart the CMF which I had to bricklink.

After buying 284 sets without a single piece missing, I had 2 large pieces missing in #10254 Holiday Winter Train: a dark blue Slope, Curved 2 x 4 x 2/3 No Studs with Bottom Tubes and a green Window 1 x 2 x 3 Shutter with Hinges. On the other hand I had an extra Seat 2 x 2 with Center Sprue Mark and a Technic Axle 8L. Very strange!

My son open today's Star Wars Advent calendar (Day 2) and the Bespin Guard was missing his head. This marks 4 years in a row that one of the LEGO Advent calendars (Friends, City, and now SW) has had at least one missing piece. I will be waiting till after Christmas to contact LEGO customer service about this and any other missing piece that is discovered from the Friends and SW calendars my kids are opening.

Once had a missing 1x8 white tile from Town Hall. But twice I've had incorrect pieces. An Indiana Jones set had a soldier head instead if Indy's head, and in the recent City train station, a green torso had on dark green arm and one normal green arm.

Not bad at all for the hundreds of sets I have bought through the years!

@willobee498 2008 was a pretty bad year for getting heads wrong. On multiple ovations I've gotten an anikan head instead a clone head or vice versa, also a lot of the generic fleshy heads got mixed up.

I've only had one missing piece, a few years ago. I was missing two 1x6 black tiles. LEGO was very good and sent replacements straight away.

Never had this happen before.  My son got the hulk vs. hulk set.  Three sealed numbered bags, missing a fourth.  All minifigures missing.  No sign of tampering on the box or the bags.  Back to the store!

Does this count? I gave my brother a #9492 TIE fighter back in 2012/13 and upon opening it he found the contents were a completely different set. Luckily Target exchanged it. Makes me wonder about all those sealed sets being traded for crazy prices out there.

Someone probably bought, stole, sealed really nicely, then returned it.

I bought a Hulkbuster from K-mart awhile back, still sealed but over half the pieces were gone. That's the only time I've had missing pieces, I think.

The first large set I got was the tower of Orthanc. I thought it was missing a ton of pieces and was filling them all in on the missing parts set at the Lego website until one of my kids realized that multiple bags had the same numbers and I just only opened one of the bags I was looking for. That being said I have had missing pieces, but they could easily have been missed in a bag or something. What really amazes is me is that Lego has sent me bricks that my kids have lost or broken for no charge, even when I have said it is our own fault. They have the best customer service.

All these stories about missing bags, etc. in retail outlets is the reason I never buy Lego from Target, Walmart, etc. anymore. It's all online, either Amazon or the Lego shop website, for me...

It can happen anywhere. It's not just the in-store sets.

I wouldn't say missing bricks are all that common.  Between 1988-2005 I never had a set that was missing an element.  For some reason there was a 4 or 5 year period starting in 2006 that I had one or two sets every year that had some type of issue.  Normally it was a missing brick.  But was missing a mini figure's legs once and another time it was a malformed brick.  It was during this time that I bought a sealed set from a few years earlier that was miss a large plate.  All very frustrating.

Since 2012 I've only had one missing element and an issue with one set of instructions.  The booklet wasn't made correctly and I was missing half the pages.  Getting a full, proper replacement set of instructions wasn't near as easy as replacing a brick.  I had to call customer service and try to explain to two people why I wanted a physical hard copy.  Both of these folks (who were very nice) were trying to let me just to use the PDF version off the official site.  The second woman finally agreed I should have physical hard copy.

IMO Its a LOT rarer when buying online. I have had and heard of FAR more issues buying from a retail brick and mortar than an online site. I think it is more the thieves do not want to have to take the time to return an item via shipping (and therefore getting caught, or the online store noticing a pattern of returns), I'm guessing they would rather get the quick cash back in an actual store.

Just to clarify:  I HAVE had missing pieces in sets purchased from Lego's site, but it was a case of one large piece replaced by another (incorrect) large piece.  The horror stories about entire bags missing, non-Lego junk replaced in the box, etc. is what steers me away from the retail shelves these days.  If the Target/TRU/Walmart online sites are not selling returned items, they're probably safer than the retail store shelves...but I tend to stick to TLG and Amazon (mostly for the promotions, discounts, and supporting this website via the links!

I had a similar problem with my Assembly Square instructions, which were torn. Tried to file a request on the website but got rejected. Had to call Customer Service in the end and they promised to send out a new set of instructions. Haven't received it yet though.

I akso had something with assembly square, but it is the opposite of a missing part. I got a silver technic bushing (1x1) extra, altough it isn't in the set! I spent ten minutes looking at the manual searching were it was supposed to go!

My Millennium Falcon had a White Flat Tile 1x3 instead of a Black Cross Axle 2M With Snap With Friction in bag number 10.

I now have a missing piece order at Lego and a broken Microfighters Ghost...

I had 2 dark bluish gray and 1 tan 1x2 plate too many in my Caterham Seven, yet lacked a yellow one...

Of all the sets I've bought new, only one had anything missing.  Lego Customer Service sent me one very quickly.

Worst one for me was with the most recent AT-AT set where I checked all the seals, bought it at TLG store, and opened it only  to find it was missing all of Bag 1.  Like, all of it.  I had multiples of Bag 6 I think, so bravo for spare parts, but it did take a call to friendly customer service to get Bag 1 taken care of and it was relatively painless.

I can only think of one set that I've ever been short pieces on, and that was recently.
I was missing 2 pieces out of a 75125 Resistance X-Wing fighter.  Nothing major, a 1X2 and technic pin.

I didn't contact Lego as more often than not I end up with extra pieces, and as luck would have it I had those extra from another set.

If I didn't have those pieces on hand I probably would have called Lego for the missing pieces.
