If there was a set from discontinued line that was never made but you wish it was, what would it be?

For me, the biggest discrepancy would be Minias Tirith from LOTR. I mean, come on, really? One of the most prominent places in the films and yet, no set. :(

I agree with Minas Tirith.  My only explanation is that they anticipated the theme would sell better, and Minas Tirith was planned as a later set, maybe even UCS or that size.  I think it might have worked had Lego acquired the license when the original movies were in theaters.  They would have pumped out sets in multiple waves over 3 years and no doubt they would have sold much better then.  They could have even anchored it with a big D2C Rivendell for Fellowship, kept the Tower of Orthanc for Two Towers, and then Minas Tirith for Return of the King.

I know someone will respond that The Hobbit was in theaters when sets came out and they didn't seem to sell all that well either.  Well, The Hobbit movies were not nearly as well received as LotR was in its day (the last movie won the best picture Oscar).

The one impediment I see with why Lego didn't pursue the license then was Harry Potter.  2001-2004 - the years LotR was popular and in theaters - was also the years the first 3 Harry Potter movies were in theaters, and the first Harry Potter sets were on shelves.

In terms of Classic Pirate sets - I think TLG really made the rounds, great Pirate bases and ships - great solider bases and ships - I guess the only thing that would have been cool is a large scale "treasure island" type set.  I've always had the idea of MOCing a large scale island/pirate port one day...

While I don't collect much in the way of SW, there is one thing I would really want, will likely never be: the Ebon Hawk, as a predecessor of sorts to the Falcon, one approximately to the scale of the current MF to display along side it.

Minas Tirith for sure. Not only the lack of that setting but so many minifigs left out by not covering Gondor as well.

I would have also enjoyed Wolfpack getting another set or two to round them out a bit more. The last two Pirate lines didn't capture the magic of the old trading posts which is also regrettable.

I also wish stand-alone Train cars and engines were still a thing. More sets like the BNSF locomotive for example.

I went looking; is this what you mean? These seem to be prototypes rather than sets, but they're a lovely glimpse of what might have been. There's also a Flickr account linked in the thread that has some photos from a video shown at a convention - TLG apparently only let the images be shown because it's stuff they're never actually going to make...

I'd have liked the "tank" from Indiana Jones to have been produced as a set.

It probably would have been reasonably easy to convert it into a real Mark VIII tank, too.

Does anyone have high res images of these? I would love to moc the one I can find online, but the image is pretty bad and I can't really make it out. Are there others?

As a big fan of classic Pirate and Castle there are a number of sets from that era I wish existed.

Pirate wise, I always thought a pirate lighthouse would be cool.  For some reason I've always thought it would look cool to have the pirates have a lighthouse as a base.  Another one that they had elements of, but never really did was a "tavern" set for the pirate to be lazy in.  A Governors Mansion I thought could be a good Soldiers/Guards set.  Early on there was this whole big back story about a group of settlers, where were their sets?  There are so many great ideas here I don't even know where to start.

In terms of Castle, there were a number of village type sets like 6041 and 6040 I thought should have been done.  A stables, mead hall and village square are ones that lead in my mind.  The Forestmen, Wolf Pack and Knight's Kingdom I were all subthemes I thought were too short.  I think Wolf Pack and the Bulls from KKI had more legs then what they were given.  A Bulls' castle or fortress would have been nice. As would other Wolf Pack fortress and some type of army builder set.  The Forestmen I felt could have gone on longer.  More carts or some type of sneak attack and a large castle ruins with trees growing out of it for them to occupy.

    THIS!!!!!!
    Also:
Shell cottage, The Ministry of Magic and Malfoy Manor from Harry Potter
Battle packs, Minas Tirith and Rivendell from LOTR/The Hobbit

I'd also like to see the forester/Robin Hood line make a comeback with some big tree fort sets that could be built seperately or tied together.

I feel like minas tirith is too big to fit the style they were making. The sets in that line were more geared for playability and there is no way you could make a playable and semi-scaled minis truth. I would have loved to see it in a form like the new disney collectors castle.

Since there was a Skeleton warship and a Troll worship in the Fantasy Era Castle line, I think a Crown Knights galley or trireme would have been pretty cool.

I didn't have to be the whole city, just like the Mines of Moria wasn't the whole mine and The Council of Elrond wasn't the entire Rivendell.

Something along the lines of the Lake-Town or the Battle of the Five Armies sets.  That would have been better than the excessive amount of Hobbit sets.

You know what would have been cool is if the Western Theme back from the 1995-1997 era was expanded.  Some more rough and tumble scenes would have been nice.

I don't know if I'd call it dead...Horizon Express wasn't discontinued that long ago, just a couple years.  I bet they knew that the Holiday train was in the pipeline and didn't want to release another specialty train set that could cannibalize market share.  I would expect to see another nice Expert train in a couple more years, there are so many possibilities they could do with it.......

Creator advanced trains are a little weird - Modern diesel, historic steam, retro electric... but if there was supposed to be another it should've come out in 2015... so it's a little late. Maybe it'll be unveiled next year?

    This is an interesting topic....

I had always loved the old 1970s Hobby sets 390-398 (no 397).  There were 3 antique cars (Rolls, Cadillac, Renault) a Harley Davidson and Norton Motorcycles, a Formula 1 Racer, a U.S.S. Constellation tall ship, and a (396) Thatcher Perkins 1863 era western American locomotive set.

I had always wondered what a likely rejected 397 model would have been?

So I took the idea of the 396 Thatcher Perkins (USA) locomotive.....

And basically made a European (German) train of the same era (no cow catcher there)... by flipping the 396 around and changing the color combinations..... to make a 397 "Werra Coburg" Locomotive... based on an about 150 year old German train line called the "Werrabahn", that followed mainly th Werra River valley.  Coburg (northern Bavaria) was one of the terminus's of the line, and it was where I was born, which is why I chose that name.... as a sort of book-end pair.

Just an idea that never went very far.... ;-)

Well, it is a shame that Bionicle G2 never got a Makuta set, either of his original "mask maker" form or his transformed/corrupted form. And I'm sad that Exo-Force never had a proper battle machine for Hitomi, who was IMO one of the theme's most interesting characters.

The main licensed theme that I felt never lived up to its fullest potential is Avatar: The Last Airbender. It only got two sets based on scenes from season one and none based on scenes from seasons two and three (since I didn't get into the show until later on I never ended up getting any of the sets). The season one sets were somewhat poorly realized, and we never got sets of iconic subjects like Aang's flying bison, Appa.

The LOTR series was the PERFECT theme for battle packs - just crying out for them:
    - elves
    - dwarves
    - orcs
    - gondor soldiers
    - Rohan horsemen/soldiers (maybe two mijiigigs with horses two without per pack)
    - mordor soldiers

just a huge missed used opportunity to sell a ton of mini figures. People would have bought dozens and dozens each

LEGO really took the entirely wrong approach with LOTR. They treated it like every other normal kid based theme, which was a poor understanding of the audience.  What they should have done instead was to do about half as many sets, but make them all medium to large size covering all the main locations, then augment with $20-$25 mini figure packs to fill out armies.

^ Yes. I imagine they saw The Hobbit as a kids' film, and they only seemed to do LOTR to get The Hobbit (if not, why not do it earlier when LOTR was more current), so LOTR became a kids' theme too. But even then, they could have done battle packs like in SW, castle, etc.

I know- Hitomi was more interesting that three out of four of the theme's main four pilots. It's arguable that she is more interesting that Takeshi, and I wouldn't argue against it.

She was so interesting, in fact, that Pacific Rim just took her out of Exo-Force, and plopped her into their story...

In the story, she commonly hijacked piloted the Blazing Falcon. Why they put Ryo in that set, I'll never know.
