Alien Chestburster

Hi all,

I was looking into the possibility of building a Avro brothers Lego Alien Chestburster and i was wondering if anyone had a parts list to hand so i could see what parts i have and what parts i would need to buy before purchasing their pdf instructions..

    It has a 6177 in dark red (not cheap!) and the only available flexible H's are likely to sell out quite fast.

    Wow just looked on Bricklink... 6177 ain't cheap! I may have to substitute that part! Re other parts I am happy to play the long game and spend a year of so collecting parts..

    This is a new version of their model, but looks pretty similar although the base fits in with the Alien.

    They have started to do alternative instructions that avoid rare / expensive parts, looking on facebook it seems the same is true here.

    I've built this. The 'pooling blood' that 6199 represents has an alternate build but it is studs on top and doesn't look as good. The x169 utensil piece isn't rare.

    2399 used for the base is only available in single quantities. At least you only need 4 and not 32 like the Alien build.

    Pony up the money and buy the PDF build from the Arvos. It is worth it.

    It depends how you define rare. There was one in two different sets, both over ten years ago. There are currently only 6 second hand for sale in the UK on BL, none new. So I reckon they could well sell out fast, hence the mention of them above. It wouldn't surprise me if more than six people in the UK will want to build this so some of them will need to use stores located abroad if bricklinking the parts.

    Recall what happened to black dinosaur necks when the Arvo Brothers Alien book was published. There were about 90 for sale in the UK (second hand, for ~15-20p and new about 50p-£1) and within a couple of weeks most of that stock was sold and the price had increased to £3-4 each. Any sellers that had multiples sold out very quick. I know as I bought about 10 to ensure good quality used ones.

    If you restrict to UK sellers then yes, you're in trouble. I always buy from EU. For the Chestburster I had to extend to a couple of American/Canadian/Australian orders.

    I would classify rare as few worldwide sales. There are two tan parts completely unavailable but the alternate fits the build fine.

    Rather than the use of a 4 stud sized curved piece the alternative is to use single stud bricks. That actually works well because the resulting lines between the pieces fits the look of the Chestburster body.

    But the alternate build for the 6177 piece doesn't depict pooling blood very well. I would get it while you can.

    Well thanks to a very kind member of the forums I now have the part list! My first sort of my Lego (without raiding any built or ongoing projects) has got me from need 808 parts to just 376 parts. So not a bad start!!

    Probably not from memory... I might start out with the alternative build for the blood pool and then look for that at a resonable price in slower time..

    I've got all the parts for the alternate blood pool, plus a spare 6177 so bear that in mind.

    @TheFew I was inspired by this thread, bought the instructions and started gathering parts. I have way more than I thought I would. Probably have more than that but I have no good sort setup yet. Ordered one batch of parts. I'm stumped about one part. It's called 6081 in the part list, it's a Brick, Modified 1x4 x 1 1/3 with curved top. The Brickset and Bricklink databases both show it not being available in Tan, though all photos of the build show a tan part. Does this part actually exist in Tan? If so what set did it come in? Anybody know? It is on the underside of each side of his neck. You could use 4 alternates on each side...I'd rather not if I don't have to.

    It was produced in tan but there are none on Bricklink or Brickowl for sale. However, the alternative build (basically 4 individual bricks rather than a 1x4) actually works well.

    @blogzilly my part hunting continues only 166 parts to go! I am however going for the cheaper build using some of the alternative build options. Once completed, if I love tge model I may then upgrade to the more expensive options. I had not noticed the lack.of a tan 6081! I use a tool called Brickstock and it quotes average sold prices over the last 6 months at £3.07, so i assumed it was a rare part.. but it seems to be very rare!! Perhaps @Scatterbug can shed some light on where the tan 6081s live....

    (I tried editing my previous response so this is a continuation of my post)

    The alt-body build works well because the additional lines created fits in with the overall creature design.

    The alternative for the pooling blood however is detrimental due to the studs on top pieces and necessary loss of the tooth brick that depicts dripping blood.

    This may be considered blasphemous, but I'm considering redesigning the pooling blood to achieve a SNOT technique but cheaper. If it's possible. Using a combo of colors that I'll have to bring in from the source of the blood. It works in there, might work down there.  I won't know until I start building. 

    Ive had to manually enter parts into my build list, and I should show you my stash, you might call me crazy for doing this before I've sorted all my crap at my new house. But I figured...what the Hell...I need something to occupy my mind until we get over there and I don't want to build any sets. When I get home I'll shoot a pic of the mess in progress. I find it comical. 

    Oh and I might see if there is a way to sub in a different part for 6081. Namely 10314. I'm a rookie so I don't know if it's possible but I'm willing to take a crack at moving some stuff around, especially since I have those parts and a few ideas.

    10314 is a tile according to Bricklink. Just buy the 8 alternative curved pieces (you can see them underneath the elephant trunk parts in my build photos). They're readily available and cheap.

    But that's simply the best aesthetic solution to me. Going with your own design is what Lego is about.

    Here's one of the piles of stuff I was going through. Some of the bins are in a pre sort mode. Most of the baggies are not. It has been an adventure. I've pulled some stuff from built sets too. 



    Im a bit over 50% should have it into the mid to upper 60s by the end of the evening. 70s if I'm lucky then the rest will need to be bought on BL.

    It can be a bit of a chore! My loose lego is all sorted by colour and it still took me around 8 hours to check it all for parts for the Nebulon Frigate MOC. but the is a 5000 piece model and there are lots of small bits....

    The tan 6081 part, I'm having trouble figuring out what set it comes in. BS doesn't list a tan part specifically and BL isn't being helpful either. Anyone?

    Use 4x 609101 instead of 6081.

    I hear ye. I just can't wait to get moved into our new house (week from Saturday) so I can begin a real building area. I already have 8 Drawer units on hand, more on order, lots of photos for ideas, and a dream.

    Yeah, that's the conclusion I came to as well. Wasn't 100% though. Neither are you going by the "?".

    I have a feeling I have seen one or two in the pile.

    Looking at this last night, Rebrickable has the part from #75086 listed as Dark Tan and had no reference to the 'normal' Tan colour which I presumed the rest of the build was built from. So far have not managed to find that colour anywhere.

    There's a part number for them in brick yellow (which is BrickLink's "tan") so they probably do exist, albeit produced quite a long time ago. However, that doesn't mean they ever appeared in any set.

    I noticed some parts in Prehistoric Creatures today that had a dark orange that looked sort of tan. I need to study the colors more. That's from, what...2003? 04? I think this Chesty was built with parts around 2002-2007 ish, seems that way.

    I'm ALMOST THERE. Hit the 80% mark today. Saw an 8x8 Dark Red disc for 32.00 on Bricklink today. Shit no...I could not pull the trigger on that.

    That's interesting. Here, this home is considered average to being on the small side. 3 bed 2 bath. It is considerably smaller than the house I bought in 2006 but had huge issues with leading to a 2013 bankruptcy. 50,000 in damage from the builder that insurance didn't cover, eventually the front door just collapsed inward, the entire front hall was near collapse into the basement. 

    But it it was huge. Near 4800 square feet. A monster. 4 bedrooms, a loft, an office, two living rooms, 3 bathrooms...it was crazy. America is...we have strange value systems...the greatest place I ever lived was a townhouse. Always will be. My wife has this idea that we have to live in a house, a big one...that it somehow defines her success. Never understood that.

    That was funny. 

    Well, I wrap up getting the stuff over to the new place today and tomorrow, meantime the final Bricklink Orders are en route! WOOT! I'll be able to start building soon!



    There is an 8x8 dark red disc for sale for 40 US if anyone needs. Ouch. I paid that. I'm delirious from the moving.

    So my last project was the Batpod self build... Been looking for an excuse to get back into Lego but haven't found anything exciting until I seen this fantastic alien piece. I would love to start it right away I just have a few questions for those who have built it.

    1. What is the total piece count?

    2. How long did it take those who completed it to source all the pieces?

    3.what total price am I looking at here rare pieces vs substitutes?

    4.(I doubt it's possible) but can this model be found on rebrickable? I find this site so useful.

    Would love to know abit more before I commit to buying the instructions.

    I haven't built it yet but I'll answer what I can. 
    1. Not sure. According to the Bricklink parts list I uploaded there are 235 line items. I still haven't figured out how to do a count from that. It might be in the excel or .xml file they give with the instructions I'll look when I get a chance I have to clean my old house today though others may know. 

    2. It only took me a month or so to find all the pieces. But I had an open budget. I spent 40 on the disc and was not that frugal with this thing. Might take longer if you try to save money. I did learn that since this was built circa 2007 there are sets that the build seemed to pull from, in a time frame from the early to mid 2000s which makes some piece acquisitions hard, but had I to do over I would buy those SETS.

    3. Again, can wildly vary depending on patience and diligence. Example. If you go get or already have the Creator Set 4507 Prehistoric Creatures it has a bunch of pieces you need, and so on and so on. Wild Hunters, etc., and of course if you HAVE a UCS Rebel Blockade Runner...well, you save 30-40 on a dark red 8x8 circle. 

    4. I looked prior but could not find.

    Want my advice? Because I bought the instructions. They were cheap. 

    Its a password protected PDF that you download. Other than the pain in the ass of having to enter the password every time your tablet auto closes (which I understand for security) the instructions are nicely done. Try to download to some place you can access anywhere. I downloaded to my OneDrive so I can access the file from my phone, iPad, laptop and desktop. If you do that for your personal use then it's not a problem. 

    Even had I never pursued the parts it would have been worth it just to see these instructions I'd heard people talking about. But that's just me and I'm weird like that. 

    Im guessing I spent close to 140 on the parts, mainly because of the discs and all the minimum buys on getting the last parts I needed 1-2 of. Doing it over I could spend less knowing what I know now, especially about using Bricklink more effectively. 

    Cmon...do it...you know you wanna.... :)

    Great advice @blogzilly ! I'm no stranger to the rare parts... As long as they exist on bricklink I'm sure I will cave into buying them whatever the price. 

    That budget sounds dead on I spent around $100 on the Batpod ... But 80% of the parts came in one purchase from rebrickable hench why I asked. 

    Such a unique looking set and such a detailed build I will purchase the PDF soon. 

    If anyone else has some input I'd appreciate it.

    I'm collecting the parts at the moment as I built the Arvo Bros Alien and P200 first And now....I'm ashamed to say that I'm very haphazard tho!

    I just noticed that the new Penguin Arctic car has two pieces at least of part 18653 which was one of the last on my list to get filled. I think I could have it all wrong I am still learning parts, but it looks like it. Can't confirm until I see a list. 

    I also discovered I'm one freakin piece short. FRAK! Stupid math....

    Hi Steve. It would be a private sale so message me if interested. When I Bricklinked the Chestburster I bought a number of spares. I have a spare 6177 disc because one went missing in the post from Australia but turned up weeks later.
