Building by Bag........ whats your strategy ?

  This evening im yet again left wondering who / how the bag numbers get decided...... My last big set was 

  70751-1: Temple of Airjitzu - 2028 pieces, 13 bags - 156 pieces avg.

  
  

  Tonight im starting 

  10252-1: Volkswagen Beetle - 1167 pieces, 3 bags - 389 pieces avg

  
  

  And Technic sets seem to be a free for all of open all bags no matter how many parts...

  I just binge built :) Save up some sets, and then built for a day (or more :))

  With larger sets, I try to build a bit at a time... 1 or 2 bags per night, for example. It doesn't always work though and many times I end up being a glutton and do the whole lot in one go... :-)

  I like the idea of a bag a night, but I definitely need to make sure I'm watching something that makes me want to keep looking up at it so I don't accidentally burn through two!

  A computer. Beyond sorting to give different bags for different stages, the primary consideration is whether the weight of a missing part would be readily detectable in the bag. So you don't get small parts in a bag that is relatively heavy because it contains several larger ones.
  
  Then there are factors like whether parts can be divided in such a way that you can include two, or more, identical bags, rather than a different mix of pieces, but also in two bags. That means there is one less type of item to pack and for which to hold a separate inventory.

  Allow me to confess that I never start a new set unless I know I can finish it in one sitting. This has lead me into a 17 hour building session before (#NoRegrets and lots of coffee) which started at midnight and continued through until 1700 the next day. All of the bags are free game unless numbered otherwise but I tend to construct dividers to keep each bag separate from others.

  Heavens above! Which set was that? Taj Mahal?

  Ha, surprisingly not; I'm not a very experienced Technic builder which sometimes leads to a set having a locked differential, gears slightly misaligned or my worst failure being a crane not having the driving gears attached to the output of the motor. Essentially I might need to make some repairs to fix previous mistakes. The 17 hour build in question was the Mercedes Arcos truck 42043 which, upon completion promptly rained Technic pins onto me as I lifted it up to a shelf for display.

  I'm not a speedy builder but will often like to complete a set once I have started it.  Have done a few builds through the night although I am not sure I would attempt that strategy with a Technic build.  I would be sure to make a number of errors then.

  I like to build my Modulars a floor per day and spread them out over a few days.

  One set/box per build. I don't like leaving things for 'tomorrow'...it's more rewarding that way, I think.

  I tend to build small sets in an evening on the sofa. Bigger sets like Technic or Modulars are spread out over days or a weeks. The Brick Bank was a couple of hours an evening for two weeks. The 911 GT3RS was similar, taking me about 18 hours.
  
  I feel I've spent my hard earned cash on the set, there is no point rushing it. I enjoy the build time.
