LEGO Dragons

JudgeChuckJudgeChuck Member Posts: 1,583
So, nice, easy question for you all... How many LEGO Dragons (or Wyverns) do you have, from all themes?

I'll kick off with:

30422 Kai's Mini Dragon
70734 Master Wu Dragon
70738 Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty - Is this meant to be a small Morro's Dragon, or just a generic one?
70748 Titanium Dragon
70593 The Green NRG Dragon
70599 Cole's Dragon
70602 Jay's Elemental Dragon
31032 Red Creatures
21107 The End - I think that The Ender Dragon in this set *just* counts!
21117 The Ender Dragon - The proper one!
79018 The Lonely Mountain - Smaug, of course!

Over to you!

Bonus question: Which one is your favourite and why?

At the moment, I think #70593 The Green NRG Dragon is my current favourite. It's large, has some great green parts, the head looks fantastic and as for those wings... :-)

I have a number of the old molded dragons from the 90s Castle sets. Don't really have a firm count on how many exactly.

    Besides those, I have:

Norbert from #4707 Hagrid's Hut (along with the same dragon piece used as ornamentation in other sets)

#7017 Viking Catapult versus the Nidhogg Dragon
#7019 Viking Fortress against the Fafnir Dragon

Shard from #2260 Ice Dragon Attack
    Flame from #2507 Fire Temple
Rocky from #2509 Earth Dragon Defense
Wisp from #2521 Lightning Dragon Battle
Ultra Dragon from #9450 Epic Dragon Battle
    #70725 Nindroid MechDragon
    #70748 Titanium Dragon
    #70734 Master Wu Dragon
#70736 Attack of the Morro Dragon
Ghost dragons from #70735 Ronin R.E.X. and #70738 Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty
    #70602 Jay's Elemental Dragon

#10204 Vezon & Kardas (I don't have this set specifically, but I have the three component sets and have built the combination model).
    #44009 Dragon Bolt

Miku from #41077 Aira's Pegasus Sleigh
Merina from #41172 The Water Dragon Adventure
Spark from #41174 The Starlight Inn
Zonya from #41175 Fire Dragon's Lava Cave
Thorne from #41176 The Secret Market Place
Rayne and Gust from #41178 The Dragon Sanctuary
Elandra from #41179 Queen Dragon's Rescue
Estari from #41180 Ragana's Magic Shadow Castle

Still hoping to pick up the two baby Elves dragons I'm missing! Other than that I think I'm mostly content with my collection for now.

Favorite dragon? Tough question! I really love both Master Wu Dragon and Elandra the Queen Dragon. Master Wu Dragon is more rugged and angular, while Elandra is more streamlined and graceful. Master Wu Dragon has two more points of articulation (20 vs. 18), while Elandra is a lot bigger and more muscular. I'm not sure I can pick a favorite out of those two.

    Fire temple
    Epic dragon battle
    Master Wu's dragon
    Attack of the Morro dragon
    Final flight of Destiny Bounty
    Kai's mini dragon
    Bat lord x2
    Witch's windship
    Traitor's transport
    Night lord castle

My favourite would probably be the Morro dragon if I had built it, but so far it's the ultra dragon.

I'm sure this doesn't include MOC's, but if it does, I'm throwing Artifex's Golden Dragon in the ring,

Using the dragon tag in Brickset search pulls up 71 unique matches.

And looks like I've got 18 of them (29 including duplicates), though surprised to see lots of dragons under the Elves theme :)

I though that @Aanchir was a shoe-in for the most dragons, but it looks like we've all been put in the shade by you, @TheOneVeyronian! That is a very impressive collection. :-)

I've got three of the old heraldic-style dragons from the 90s - two green ones and a black one. That is, I know I must have two green ones, but I've mislaid one. I should find it later this week when I dig in the last unsorted crate. I'd happily add to that population as I just really love the design, but I wouldn't mind a nice brick-built one. I've just never hit that threshold of "I must have that specific dragon"-meets-"wow, that's a cool price!"

Dragons in my ownership, in order of preference are:

Master Wu (I just love the face on this one)
Morro (close second just for the size)
    Titanium - Jay's elemental (joint)
Green NRG (would much prefer front legs)
    Red Creatures
    Cole's
Mini-Cowler lookalike from Blaster Bike set.

Looking forward to next year as that appears to be bringing a double-headed one, and also to seeing if I can adapt the Creator t-rex into a green dragon with wings from the Ideas Birds set.

    Don't forget DUPLO dragons!

Or the "Lava Dragon" from the game:

By my quick count, I have at least 58-- but about 20 of those are "baby" dragons like Norbert and the baby Elves dragons.  And I'll bet I've got a bunch more unaccounted-for classic green/black dragons, since I believe I got a bunch in unsorted lots over the years.  So... maybe 60-70 all told?

I have to say that this has been a bit of an eye-opener... Obviously, I knew that there were going to be quite a large number of dragons produced over the years, but I didn't realise quite how many.
A quick search in the BS DB shows 71 sets tagged "Dragon", including one unreleased Ninjago set, but that Duplo dragon is missing, so I wonder what the grand total is...

I guess I can't really tell what kind of thing it was-- it looks like it was a prize in a contest?  In the Bionicle wiki, I see the Kanohi Dragon, Phase Dragon, and a Hordika Dragon grouped in that category, but I'm not clear exactly what they were.  Dunno if I'd count them or not-- tricky to say.

Personally, nothing tops the castle dragons that I have from the 90's sets.  Those are truly fit to form.

There were two dragons in Bionicle sets: the Hikaki Dragon Lizard (the model pictured on the box of #10023 Bionicle Master Builder Set) and the Kardas Dragon from #10204 Vezon & Kardas. I forgot to mention #10023 in my list of dragon sets I have above, but I have that one too.

Kanohi Dragon and Phase Dragon were building contest entries that ended up getting published in the "Bionicle: Rahi Beasts" guide book and incorporated into the Bionicle story. The Hordika Dragons were an entry in a similar building contest the next year that were published in the "Bionicle: Dark Hunters" guide book. But none of those three were ever released as sets.

From a nostalgic perspective I like those older dragons, but these days both brick-built and molded dragons tend to have a lot more posability (6 points of articulation was a lot for a LEGO creature back then, but today even the most basic LEGO Castle dragons offer twice that). Also, I've come to greatly prefer colored eyes, whether printed or brick-built, over molded cavities like the old shark, crocodile, and dragon. LEGO "people" have colored eyes, so why not LEGO animals and monsters as well?

Ahh, ok-- plus, I forgot the mini-Ender Dragon from Minecraft, AND the red creator dragon from 31032, so the total count's up to:

    71) Hikaki Dragon Lizard (Bionicle)
    72) Kardas Dragon (Bionicle)
    73) Mini-Ender Dragon (Minecraft)
    74) Red Creator Dragon (31032)

The other Bionicle dragons sound like they probably shouldn't be included, since LEGO didn't design them and no formal instructions seem to have been released.  Seems like including those would mean we'd have to include "mentioned" dragons in other storylines or otherwise, which is too much for my tastes.

And of course, we know about a few upcoming dragons in Ninjago and Elves, too, as I recall.  But no pictures yet (that I'm aware of).

It was the second-place in the Rahi conest they ran back in 2004. Tahtorak won and was featured in a comic, but Kanohi Dragon was right up there, and appeared in several stories. The others are combo/alternate builds, not sets.

    I just have these three:

#70593 The Green NRG Dragon (just finished building it this afternoon and I think is my favourite due to the folding fabric wings)
    #70599 Cole's Dragon
    #70602 Jay's Elemental Dragon

And I hope to get #30422 Kai's Mini Dragon soon.

May have to get looking at the others!

I think the way the Ninjago dragons are built works very well for the oriental nature of the creatures and I think they're fantastic, but I do wish that I'd been out of my DA during the Castle "Fantasy" era up to 2012 and got some sets such as #7094 King's Castle Siege, to have some more "traditional" dragons as well...

I have several Ninjago dragons but I've ended up deconstructing most. I think when it comes to any animal, I really prefer the molded parts. My Jurassic World T-Rex or 2012 Castle theme dragon won't ever be replaced by a brick built kind, no matter how neat it looks.

Yeah, I kinda skipped printed dragons, since there were a lot of possibilities.  Torsos (Dragon Masters, Kingdoms, Ninjago), flags (Orient Expedition, Black Knights, DUPLO), Ninjago window panes, the DUPLO bricks (there's a few of them), Dragon Master's cape, shields (Dragon Masters, Black Knights, more DUPLO), etc, etc.  I wonder if there are more types of *printed* dragons than *actual* dragons?

Ollie's head in 40145, though... hm... maybe?

#31032 is a Creator set that's still available featuring a more European-style brick-built dragon! There are also this year's Elves dragons, the biggest and most impressive of which is Elandra in #41179. Very powerful and European in style, although not as aggressive-looking as the dragons from LEGO Castle.

Of course, "traditional" is a pretty vague description, since European dragons even from the oldest legends and heraldry could vary wildly. Some had two legs and two arms like the LEGO Castle dragons, some had two legs and no arms like Smaug, some had four legs like the LEGO Elves dragons, and some had no legs at all!
I have several Ninjago dragons but I've ended up deconstructing most. I think when it comes to any animal, I really prefer the molded parts. My Jurassic World T-Rex or 2012 Castle theme dragon won't ever be replaced by a brick built kind, no matter how neat it looks.
I used to prefer molded dragons in many respects due to feeling more lifelike and truer to the style of the minifigure and other LEGO animals like the horse and crocodile. But I feel like brick-built creatures have evolved a lot due to new parts like curved slopes and the joint pieces from the Mixels sets. It says a lot when a brick-built dragon like Thorne, Zonya, or Elandra can fit in next to a mini-doll, despite the mini-doll having an even less blocky design language than the traditional minifigure. I see more potential for brick-built dragons to continue to evolve in the future than their molded counterparts.

I might be fonder of molded creatures if they were more customizable. I enjoyed the 2001 Dinosaurs sets, as unrealistic as they were, because I liked the sense of using the same system of parts to create many different types of creature. Newer dragon and dinosaur molds still have plenty of connection points and are much more customizable than 90s dragon and dinosaur molds, but don't give me quite that same sense of creative freedom that those Dinosaurs sets did.

I definitely prefer the "look" of the classic dragons best, but their lack of articulation, customization, and sheer size make them less desirable to me.

I never liked the look of the "creature-system" Dinosaurs (used in dinosaurs, elephants, dewbacks, etc), since they looked... strange.  Some creatures looked ok in that system, others just looked unnatural.

The brick-built dragons in Vikings started to give dragons a lot more articulation, but they didn't look as organic, since they used a lot of Bionicle elements that make them look more like dragon cyborgs.  But they did offer much better articulation and customization!  Ninjago is a bit better, but ... still a little too inorganic for me, generally.

I honestly think I like the style of the Elves dragons best, I think.  They look pretty organic, they've got pretty good articulation, and they're about what "feels right" for the scale of a minifig-scale dragon.  I haven't tried yet, but I'd love to copy the design of the Elves dragons in non-pastel colors, using other existing dragon heads, and see how they look.

@Aanchir, yes I have the #31032 Red Creatures Dragon, currently sitting atop my Palace Cinema! :-)

I like the idea of the Elves dragons, but they're far, far, *far* too twee for me, I'm afraid! ;-)

@davee123, you're right that the Ninjago dragons can look a little "cyborg-ish", which I think fits the theme, but I agree that they wouldn't be great for a more "realistic" looking dragon.

I love Smaug from #79018, but that's just a little bit too molded for me. I would prefer something that looks a little more "built"... Having said that, Smaug is just an extension of "bigfigs", such as the troll from #9473 The Mines of Moria or Dogshank from #70604 Tiger Widow Island, as well as many others, so I do accept the design choice made.

Might be worth combining a head from a Ninjago dragon with the rest of an Elves one....

Although related, sea serpents are not true dragons / wyverns... Both are of the Order "Dracoformes", but while dragons are of the Family "Draconidae", I am not sure you would classify sea serpents in that same Family.

Should the serpents count?  If so:

Well, I admittedly didn't consider Brickley in my list, but then again, I DID already ignore the Midgard Serpent from 7018 (rather intentionally).  There's also one in 8080 (Atlantis). But if you count those, then you get into sketchy territory with the Basilisk from Harry Potter, since it's basically just a large snake (just not underwater).  And THAT opens the door for the Ninjago Serpentine.  So... yeah.

I dunno.  I guess I'd just leave 'em off personally, but there's clearly blurry territory.

I think it just depends on what your definition of a dragon is.   Is it molded with only a handful of pieces? Or is it "brick built"?  I think there are several categories here - but one thing is clear - TLG has made a TON of dragons!  Another reason why I love this forum - I learned something new and exciting!

I have fond memories of how thrilled my sister and I were to get a castle set with the green dragon and majisto the wizard for Christmas 1993. As far as we were concerned it was Gandalf and Smaug. Now my kids are in love with the elves and Ninjago dragons and I expect this Christmas will be full of dragons too.

^I have similar nostalgic memories.  Especially with it being cold and snowy outside, so having to stay inside and build with LEGO all day!

FYI: The Nindja tribe from Mixels series 9 have a Dragon as their Max build.

Just pulled Elandra the Queen Dragon out of her box because I wanted to remind myself of how big she was exactly. It turns out that with her neck and tail fully outstretched, she's pretty much exactly 50 studs long with a 50 stud wingspan. So slightly smaller than Smaug in that respect — however, due to being more "built" in both a literal and figurative sense, she weighs about twice as much (10 ounces/around 284 grams).

@davee123  You can add another #70612-1 to the list.

There's been a few additions-- some things that are new (or didn't get for some reason before) are:

    75) Bricks-And-More Dragon (5929)
    76) Goblin King's Dragon (41183)
    77) Baby Lula (Elves) (41187)
    78) Sapphire (Elves) (41187)
    79) Green Ninja Mech Dragon (70612)
    80) Dragon Forge Dragon? (70627)

Does the Dragon in #70627 have a name?

Not that I ever intended to maintain a list of these, but hey, sure!  There's also:

    81) Green Ninja Mech Dragon (mini) (30428)

And... I'm not sure if I'd count this one in #70631, it looks more like it's intended to be a vehicle rather than an actual creature:

And we'll probably be getting another creator one in #31073 in 2018, but no official pictures yet!

I think I'd count #70361 if we're counting the Green Ninja Mech Dragon and Nindroid MechDragon. The only big difference between them in that respect is that the Bot Drop Dragon doesn't have very traditional-looking wings, but then, a lot of other dragons don't have wings at all.

I think the Bot Drop Dragon also gets a name in the show, but I'm way behind on the show so I've only heard that second-hand.
