Lego Store Grand Opening - San Diego UTC

vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
http://stores.lego.com/en-us/events/san-diego-go

Just found out that San Diego will be getting a second Lego Store in September. I think that is strange since they are 10 miles apart, not to mention that Legoland is about 20 miles north of the new one. I'm happy to have another Lego store, but would have thought there are other markets in the country they could expand.

Anyone want to comment how many miles they live from the nearest Lego store.

Being that I live in both Mira Mesa and Redondo Beach, that makes 6 Lego stores plus Legoland within a 1 hr drive radius.

About 250-300 away from one, those include Beachwood, OH and KOP.

@BrickDancer - See you at the grand opening... I'd love to get a minifigure set and store set.

Marked my calendar. I'll try to be there.

How early do you think the line will start forming?
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
I believe the first person to arrive will be around 6a (there's always someone), but the line probably won't start forming until 9:30a. Waiting in lines for SDCC has really gotten me paranoid, so I might show up early to check in. Friday should be light and the real test will be Saturday.

Ugh it's the weekend before my wedding, so I'm going to be pressed as it is. But hard to let a grand opening slip by, so will try my best for Saturday and Sunday morning. Unofficial Brickset meet up then folks?

I'll do my best to be there on Saturday; it's a 1.5 hours drive for me.

45 Minutes to Orlando Florida while at home.

In my New York apartment while on business trips about 7 minutes. The one near Rockefeller Center.

I live about 6 blocks from @vwong19  hopefully work schedule will not get in the way of going.

I also have a house in Irvine, a condo in Torrance and a brother in law in Long Beach so I am up and down the coast quite a bit.

I am going to try to going to a store opening in San Francisco in August. Does anyone have experience with how popular grand openings are? I'd really like to get one of the Lego Store sets--it says first 400 customers.

As a San Diego resident, really hope to be there! The fact that Fashion Valley Mall had the Lego store was the one thing that caused us to visit the UTC mall more often. Was excited this weekend to see the new store being built!

I plan to be at that store at least two hours early both Saturday and Sunday.

@vwong19 THanks for this! I have always wanted one of those Lego Brand Store sets, but living in SoCal I thought we'd never have the chance to get one. We should honestly be at the end of the line for new store locations since there are so many. I'm definitely gonna try to go. And your right about SDCC, I keep thinking how early people are going to be lined up...worries me lol
  • DonDon Member Posts: 63
My strategy for lining up is to find the point where my desire for the perk meets my dislike of standing in line for a long time. There is some point where the line isn't worth it. :-)
For me, probably a couple hours. If I need to get there earlier than that, guess I'll live without the first-400 prize.

Whoever gets in line early should post an update. We should definitely use this unique opportunity to meet and trade Lego!

I'll be there Sat morning. Not sure what time yet. Anyone else gonna be there?
  • JooTogJooTog Member Posts: 945
I'm planning to be there on Saturday morning too.

My fiancé and I are in for Saturday morning also. What time are you 2 planning on getting there?
  • JooTogJooTog Member Posts: 945
2 hours? I don't know how bad the line it will be.

Hope anybody that is going today can provide us with some insight later so we can plan accordingly :-)

I'll be there with my kids. Sounds like we'll have to be there a lot earlier than originally expected.
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
I'll be there with my wife and kids also on Sat and Sun. Probably will arrive at least 2 hours prior, but whoever gets there first should post an update here.

If anyone is interested in any trades? See items in my store http://www.bricklink.com/store/home.page?p=vwong19

Planning for Saturday. I'm line-averse, so not getting there crazy early. I'll most likely be the guy in a Firefly T-shirt.  :-)

Here now 2.5 hrs before open and I'm about #40 in line. I'm in a dark gray Star Wars with TIE Fighter T-shirt if any body wants to say hi :)

Same, just got here, I'm about #50. I expected to be here an hour ago but my windows were so foggy when I left I accidentally ran over a center divider and some plastic undercarriage thing came unhooked and kept scrapping the floor. I had to stop like 4 times to try and position it so it wouldn't fly off on the freeway. That being said, if anyone can volunteer to take me and my girl to a Walmart or Target to get duck tape and zip ties to hold it in place so I can take it to a shop PM me lol. After the grand opening of course. Fyi I'm wearing a blue/black flannel if anyone wants to say hi

Just got here. Wearing a "join the dark side" t-shirt.

I'm in line now #3. Line is 7 long.
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
Got here around 725ish. Line isn't too bad. But I forgot they open an hour later today.

    What's the line at now?
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
Just got here with 45mins to go before opening and the line is still super short
  • JooTogJooTog Member Posts: 945
I did not felt like doing another 1.5 hours drive (each way) again today.

I would like to see what I missed; I'll appreciate a picture of the minifigure when you get a chance. Thanks!

BTW, I ended getting #10244 Fairground Mixer yesterday.

We noticed that pretty much all the $99.99 sets where already gone by the time we got in the store; by the lady counting the people earlier I was # 147 in line.

Is anybody opening their #40145 LEGO Store set or keeping it MISB as an "investment"?
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191

Line was much shorter than yesterday.

    @vwong19 Thanks for the pictures!

I figured the line would be shorter than yesterday, but there's no way I was going to do the drive from Orange County two days in a row... I got home after 7 hours yesterday and was beat.

    Looks good. Enjoy!

It was super easy today. Showed up around 1 and was out by 1:30. There were still mini fig sets available.

@BrickDancer It was good meeting you! @vwong19 great to see you again too! I had fun at the launch, got some good stuff, and probably spent too much money. Car problems aside it was great lol!

Did anyone go for the free backpack?  I was always curious about that one but it always seems like people go for the store and minifig pack so those are usually the only pics I can find online.  Completely understandable but still curious.
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
@yys4u sorry about your car misfortune, but it was good talking with you again. It was great meeting new people with shared interest and sharing about our collections. It sounds like storage space is a common problem and how our significant others haven't thrown us out. Anyway it was a great event.
