Non-production red parts as mold tests?

It is not uncommon to find Lego parts in colors that were never released in sets, but non-production red parts are said to be something special. Legend has it that red ABS is used to test new molds, because it's easier to see defects in red parts.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?
