So I have a question to some of the sellers out there, is this set STILL selling for $600 plus? I know it has sold for big money in the past, but has anyone actually sold it for big money within the last year or so? 

I ask this because collectables are only worth what people are willing to pay. I see many on sites for $1,000 or more, but are people STILL paying this kind of money for them? I am just wondering if they are actually worth more in the 400 to 500 range, but sellers are keeping the prices high, but nobody is really buying them. I know you can find many different collectable items in the internet for ridiculous prices, but if they are not selling for that, eventually the prices will come down slightly.

So any insight or experience anybody has on this issue, within the last year or two tops, If appreciate.

    If you want to get an idea of what the set sells for I would have a look at completed listings on EBay. You can also review the average selling price over the last 12 months on Bricklink. I think this would give you a decent approximation on what the set is worth although obviously the prices can vary depending a number of variables (used or new/ condition etc). I can't speak for US prices but in the UK the sets value has continued to rise, presumably on the basis that it is a great set and there seems little hope for a comparable model in the foreseeable future. I can't say I've followed the price trends too closely so happy to be corrected if anyone else has contrary information.

    It's quite easy to check what sets have sold for recently on bricklink with the price guide.

    As for ebay, click on the advanced link next to the search button on the top right of the page and put the set number in and check the completed listings button.

    This should give a good indication of what sets have actually sold for, not just what the asking price is.

    Sold my last one earlier this year for $750 on eBay. Still mad that LEGO canceled 5 I had ordered when it was on clearance for $125. I cry myself to sleep every night thinking about it.

    I would presume a black pearl would be made for the next movie; but I seriously doubt it would be anything resembling a UCS.

    So you guys still think it'll happen, POTC sets that is? Folks over on Eurobricks claim they are in the know, and they say it's not happening.

    ^ i have no idea, but the movie is set to release in may, meaning LEGO sets would be hitting the shelves in March or April at the latest.  I think there would have been leaks by now.

    anecdotally, it didn't seem like POTC sold that well last time around.  I also think that with how quickly movies come and go these days, it's a harder sell for toy manufacturers to shell out huge rights for a very very small window of time to make money (Star Wars is obviously an exception to almost every merchandising rule)

    @CaptainPirateMan , why are you worried about POTC when what you really want is an Imperial Flagship? If they do come out with a couple of ships like they did before, none of them would come close to the IF. There is a posibility that the prices gor the IF could come down, but seeing this is prime time for buying Christmas presents, I don't see it happening anytime soon. It's either now or never I guess.

    I like ALL Pirates, POTC, Castle, and LOTR releated themes. So I am VERY much in favor of POTC coming back next year, especially given the lack of ANY of the themes I just mentioned. 

    I am by no means in favor of anything that takes anything away from IFS, but if Lego does release a POTC ship that is more expensive, it does give the impression that it will be the biggest Lego ship to date. Which is great news in my opinion. But again doesn't take anything away from my love of the IFS.

    That PotC rumor is odd to me.  Only a single set in the $250.00 range?

    I would expect something closer to the single run of JW or Angry Birds.

    I hope the rumour is true although I'd be surprised if Lego released just a single large POTC set. Having said that the most lucrative sets in that theme are always going to be the pirate ships so perhaps they've decided to just focus on making a really good ship. Thinking back to the POTC theme some of those sets were a little uninspiring and I'm not sure how well they sold. It's interestig that while the Black Pearl and the QAR have ballooned in price on the aftermarket the others really haven't.

    Why do you think the focus would be on really good? If there is just one set that they have to make due to some wider agreement, then they might release only an expensive set but not put too much effort into it, using past ships as a guide. Only making one set might mean that they don't think the line will sell that well, so maybe not bother too much with what they do make. If they can take an old model and change a few colours and details to come up with something new, then why not.

    As to secondary market prices, it is not that strange that the ships have increased in value while the others are stagnant at about RRP.  Larger sets often increase more (in percentage terms) than smaller sets in the same range, moreso if they can be used outside of the original license. Many of the smaller POTC sets are just bricks if you are not interested in the license, whereas the ships are still ships even if you remove the licensing details, minifigs, etc.

    Fair points. Perhaps 'really good' was a slightly clumsy choice of words. I automatically assumed that at $250 the set would be 'really good' but I accept that price point is no guarantee of quality. To be fair, with the exception of the Imperial Flagship I can't think of any other pirate ships that sold at anywhere near that price so I would assume that some effort would have to go into designing a set of that size.

    In regards to your point about secondary market prices you are absolutely correct that the larger sets appreciate in value more. However, It's interesting to see the difference between the Black Pearl and Whitecap Bay which only had a £10 difference in retail price (in the UK, £81.99 and £71.99 respectively). New copies of the Black Peal routinely go for in excess of £300 while Whitecap Bay struggles to sell for £100. I think the key point is that the ships are much more lucrative sets which is something we both agree on.

    Sea Cow was $250, although debatable what to classify it is. I think that has gone up a bit, but not as much as other ships.

    Any largish set that can be set up as a single display piece will have a greater attraction to those who aren't particularly interested in the theme than one which involves rearranging all the "extras" every time they get knocked out of place. It simply looks good on its own rather than looking good only when set up correctly.

    My guess is LEGO would do a line of smaller sets from the newest film and one large ship if only one line.
    If they did two lines they would likely do a mix of older sets along with something like BP or QAR, and maybe the Flying Dutchman in the first line, and sets for the new movie in the second line and one of those ships.

    The $250 price is mainly to cover the cost of the special new mold needed to make a minifigure hand with part of a finger cut off to make the Johnny Depp figure as accurate to real life as possible.

    I would love a Dutchman.  Unless there is a truly notable ship in the new movie, the Dutchman is a gaping hole in the fleet...

    You can Bricklink it for around €250-350. Then sell for the amount you fancy.

    I bricklinked it a few months ago, really glad I did and cost was very reasonable with those substitutions:
    Replaced each 6x16 Reddish Brown Plates with two 6x8
    Replaced each 2x2x11 supports with 11 Reddish Brown 2x2 Round Brick.
    Replaced the pirate flag with 3 Flag 4x1 Wave

    I added a few crew members and canons and it is a great display piece.

I was actually able to pick one up from S@H on January 23, 2012 nearly two months after it was EOL'd. I still remember it was at about 5am in the morning when I was getting up early for work. It wasn't on sale, but was still a great deal even at RRP by that time. In this case, the old adage was true...the early bird gets (got) the worm.

    ^ which just goes to show how awful their inventory allocation/order fulfillment logistics were (still are?).  I remember having these same types of conversations on here about whose orders got cancelled and whose didn't when sets EOL'd.  and it often appeared random (certainly wasn't FIFO) as to who got their order filled and who didn't.

    You may have gotten an Imperial Flagship two months after EOL, but LEGO had Toa Pohatu on sale during their Wednesday phone sales about 8 years after his EOL.

    In the mid-late 2000s (I think, maybe it was early-mid or just mid), if you called LEGO on wednesdays (it would usually update around 9 in the morning), and waited through their spread of "If you want this, press 1, if you want that, etc...", or just pressed 9, then you would get to hear someone badly (badly...) reading out the names and numbers of sets for sale, and for how much. These were generally things they found extra stock of after being sold out. Sometimes the deals were extreme- one $100+ technic set for $10.99. I missed out on that one because the way the person misread the price, it sounded like they read it "one... ten ninety-nine" (for $110.99).

    I believe you had to call to order, and supplies were generally low. I believe it was how I got one of the last Golden Guardians, though.

    I sold my black pearl, but I'm hanging on to this one to build myself, because I just love it. When people are doing that, it's a good sign that the price will keep going up. 

    Might wait til it's worth $1000 just to make the build really special :) ... speaking of which, it must be time to crack open that Taj Mahal soon ...

    I ordered mine on June 8, 2012 after reading a post on another site that LEGO S@H still had some in stock but only  if ordering by phone.

    I loved that set from the first moment i saw it when i was still in my dark ages, but couldnt justify spending retail cost at that time. Man, i am such an idiot.

    This set (Imperial Flagship), is the first set I bought coming out of my dark ages. I got a £50 amazon voucher when I signed up to some new utility bill (Gas or electricity, I can`t remember). I absolutely love this set. It sat, built for 4 years, before we moved abroad. I`m still yet to build it. Soon though....!

    Find out what the most expensive parts are, replace them with similar parts, and put the list into BL's autofinder.
