That video was an emotional roller coaster. At first I was thinking,"don't remove it from the shipping box."  Then I was concerned about them damaging the box with the cavalier way they were pulling it out.  Finally, I was concerned about that kid getting his sticky little hands all over the box because you know he was just sucking on a candy cane.

My favorite part was his sister on the laptop who couldn't give two squats about it.

The kid kicked the shopping box as well...lol. I was going through the same thing as you were watching this. I cringe every time my daughter takes apart her minifigures and swap body parts, heads and capes.

We all know the previous Death Star was an absolute failure and took several years to finally sell out. What did the designers overlook before that will now make this new Death Star sell out instantly? One word: Sausages. :)

^maybe we should move this thread to the "sausage facts" thread...?

It certainly wasn't a failure in my case. It was the set that brought me out of my dark age. I bought it as a Christmas present for myself. My first lego set in 30 years! I still haven't opened it yet for sentimental reasons. However, I have acquired more than 700 sets since then! :)

    "Use the pork Luke!"

Or perhaps that's a different film altogether.

A picture of the box has finally surfaced! Are you ready to be disappointed?

    What's disappointing in that photo?
  • bandit778bandit778 Member Posts: 2,379
The only downside I can see is that if I build a planet destroying super weapon I can't call it the Death Star because they have trademarked it.
213 more pieces, updated minifigs and I have not got the original.... what's not to like.   :)

My Lego store said they have the set in the back. Pretty much the same as 10188, but with different hair for Han and Luke.

I have a MISB 10188 in my closet (no room to display yet). I am therefore fine with even minor improvements, although a bit disappointed of course. Ideally I'd just swap with someone 1:1, even though the new one costs more. It seems like the old one is still going for $500+ new... I wonder how much it will drop when 75159 finally arrives?

What isn't disappointing about it? It's just the number and piece count.
  • bobabricksbobabricks Member Posts: 1,842
At least the set isn't Death Star assault with 4000 pieces of alderaan and 16 pieces to build a mini lazer manned by Tarkin.

Aa long as it's an improvement over the last one, I'll be happy.

I heard that 1 in 100 of these new sets will contain a smooth haired C-3PO.

If these are at Lego stores already, then I would expect some leaked pictures soon.  Just once it would be nice to see Lego get out ahead of the leaks and issue a press release first.

The suspense is...worse than Christmas Eve? Hmm, no, I don't think so. I suspect this will be an easy pass for me.

    Images removed - CapnRex101

Edit: In retrospect I can't be that mean - there was no images, or CapnRex for that matter.  Move along, nothing to see here.  I just felt like this thread needed pictures!
    Brilliant. XoD

I guess I have always presumed if there was a new Death Star coming out it was to
    -update the minifig print
    -update the price :-/

I would be far more surprised if it has much new beyond that.

If that person who posted the box pic has the set why would they not show the rest of the box? I mean who would hint at upcoming sets like that? ;)

It's just the fact someone has a box in hand and they are teasing us for a little longer. It doesn't contain a picture of the actual model or Minifigures.

It's very possible that if this set was in a Lego store, the manager let the employee take a picture of the part count as long as the actual set wasn't in there. Can't always blame the photographer for the tease.

If it is as similar to the old one as suspected, presumably we can look forward to the shortest designer video ever.

According to a LEGO Ambassador on a German LUG forum, the announcement is still two weeks away (September 1). If true, I'd bet on the leaks happening first.

No doubt especially with sets being in Lego retail stores already.

My biggest complaint about 10188, and the reason I bought 10221 at the time, is that the Death Star set looked horrible on display IMO. As someone who has no interest in the play value of a set, there was no point for me. If 75159 has some level of removable side panels so it can be made to look more like 10143, I will probably save up and get it. But I don't just want to display a whole bunch of stacked up rooms.
  • bobabricksbobabricks Member Posts: 1,842
@IceCreamClone I believe I've said this before, but 10188 is all about perspective. The set was not made to be a model of the Death Star, therefore it wasn't very successful in doing so. It does, however, succeed in being a centrepiece of a series of vignettes, vaguely in the shape of the Death Star.

Even if that is as similar as people say, they'll still have to go over all the features and such like in any other designer video. Not every Lego buyer who watches those videos is intimately familiar with retired products. For that matter, I don't think the old Death Star even got a designer video in the first place!

I've just seen an image of the set, and if it's legit, I'm disappointed.

What are TLG trying to do?  Have they scaled-back the R&D and/or SW design team this year?  I thought that 75098 was a disappointing re-hash, but at least there were a few new elements.  The changes are minimal to say the least.... I'm distinctly worried about 2017.

With the response of #10249 - Winter Village, Toy Shop and #75159 - Death Star and I guess we can forget about a #10182 - Cafe Corner or #10185 - Green Grocer remake :/
  • tallblocktootallblocktoo Member Posts: 497
I don't know perhaps its not likely but on the other hand many new collectors have started buying modulars in the last few years that will never spend the money in the secondary market that would gladly buy a remake of some of the initial models.
  • thedingman5thedingman5 Member Posts: 292
I'm officially now in the camp of "I'll just wait for the re-release now" for MF, GG, CC, etc.  Seems inevitable.  If TLG sees a secondary market paying 2x, 3x, 8x RRP, they're going to go after that market with re-releases.  Not all, but enough that gives me pause before buying on the secondary...

I'm so glad I waited on picking up #10188

This set will most likely have anti-retirement armor (or at least one would think so, with the last version's life-span).

Since it's apparent that Lego is now comfortable on rehashing sets, I need Green Grocer, Cafe Corner, Winter Village Bakery, UCS Millennium Falcon, UCS SSD, Taj Mahal, and Grand Carousel rehashes, stat! :P
  • AdeelZubairAdeelZubair Member Posts: 2,704
My guess is that Mike Psiaki is the designer who improved and updated small details for this set, he the only designer who matches the Star Wars theme from the recent designer video intro. It's such a shame, I would have preferred for him to design something original given his fantastic portfolio of products and his love for Star Wars.

Well I think most of us have seen this coming for awhile now, and were just holding onto hope that we would be wrong. Disappointing but entirely unsurprising - which pretty much sums up exactly my feelings towards LEGOs overall designs, themes, policies, corner cutting, and pricing the past couple years
