Speculation on the upcoming Death Star

I bought my first Lego set 1 year ago, so I feel that I've missed out on some of the better Star Wars sets, so I would be fine if it was an updated version of 10188. I should have bought one when it was still $400 on Amazon, but I kept putting it off and now they're pushing $600.
  • bobabricksbobabricks Member Posts: 1,842
@miamibear Yeah, 10188 was just one of those sets I kept pushing off as well, but it was one that I just wanted to build to see it in person, so I went out and bought one right  before it retired. I then turned around and sold it for more used than I bought it new.

It's a cool set, but it needed to be a center piece on a table rather than a shelf piece, I just didn't have the space for it.

Oh, and I also want a small Vader-helmet-shaped tub filled with tears from an angel.

IF they do all that, then I may - MAY - be partially satisfied. Maybe.
Angel tears? Get a grip. No-one is going to do Angel tears any more it's so 2000-2010 (do we call that the 00's?) it's all about the Unicorn Tears these days. If you want Angel tears just go off to Ebay and you have to pay the after shelf price mind you need to be of legal drinking age for that Vodka in whichever location you happen to be in.
I shed many angel tears over my buggy whip collection.

I would not recommend reading too much into my comments as some Eurobricks members are. I won't say any more for fear of influencing people's opinions prior to the set's reveal.
I can read between the lines.  It will be a fully operational battle station.  With 101 minifgures, including a Captain Rex exclusive Rogue One minifigure?

I'm on to you.  It comes with a gold C-3PO, digested Boba Fett and Boss Nass.

Okay, second time I've said this in the last day: I have clearly been living under a rock. I hadn't realized that 10188 finally retired!!!! Yay!

101 minifigures? Is this some kind of Smurf crossover? Maybe 100 imperial Smurfs and 1 imprisoned Smurfette.

You didn't miss much.  That is one of my most disliked builds.  So many bricks and so plain and boring.

I have said all that I am going to say but my comment above that opinion of the set will probably be divided should be telling :o)

Meaning it will either be a playset like #10188 or another disaster like #75098 Assault on hoth UCS. Both of these are unacceptable

So going by the Disney Castle Monday could be the reveal day of the Death Star, maybe that's just wishful thinking. I have heard from a couple of people that it does not have an outer shell but who knows we will find out soon.

^which means we can expect the first leaks later today, followed by someone ignoring the rules and posting shortly after, then the inevitable removal etc!

I reckon it will be unveiled by the end of next week for sure, maybe they didn't want the press releases clashing with each other for this and the #10254 - Winter Holiday Train.

May I point out that as it is in the trailer, the set is inevitable? :P

2 droids showed him what it looked like via hologram projection after he said he was Obi Wan Kenobi. R2D2 sussed him out before he handed over the "plans" (the PDF instructions).

This reminds me of that Simpsons episode where all the girls go crazy for the new Malibu Stacy doll, even though it's just the same normal doll but with a new hat. Maybe they'll just slap a different hairpiece on Luke and call it a new set.

@empire - Would a box branded with 'includes new hat' be more or less insulting than the UCS branding on #75098 Assault on Hoth? :o)

So, awkward Google translation aside, this sounds like a 95%+ remake of #10188. As speculated. As feared.
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
Here's the portent of doom that I extracted from that "review":

Many there have already suspected: The new Death Star is a set of the Ultimate Collector Series (UCS). But do not rejoice too soon, because it behaves here like the LEGO® Star Wars ™ Assault on Hoth (75098) Set. For me, this is certainly not a reason to celebrate.

There's more there to read, if you wish to be sad.
  • DougTemplarDougTemplar Member Posts: 638
Just checking but has someone started to run a book on how long this set will be available, with side bets on how many times it will be set to "retiring soon"?

  • Final_SignFinal_Sign Member Posts: 101
Hmm, that review is still a bit confusing.  They say it is similar to 10188 but also like Assault on Hoth.  IMHO, those two descriptions are vastly different from each other.  Is it a big sphere?  Or is it a bunch of tiny "sets" that could've been sold separately?

@Final_Sign I'm guessing it's like AoH in that it's just a copy of 10188, just like AoH was a copy of previous Hoth sets.

From the translation, it sounds like a 10188 with 200 more pieces but the price has been raised $100. I thought 10188 was ugly and overpriced, so this should be an easy pass.
  • SamJSamJ Member Posts: 118
Doesn't sound very promising. Could be a few Final Duels added together? I imagine the leak will be coming very soon!

If this is as crap as expected (based on the information that seems to be available, and taking into account that I already own #10188, TLG will have dropped the ball twice in a row for the kind of sets I (and many SW mad AFOLs) usually wait all year for.
  • ISDAvengerISDAvenger Member Posts: 205
Someone got a look at it on EB. He said it is a huge disappointment as it is essentially a rehash of the 10188. Guess we will see, but I'm rapidly losing my excitement.
  • flordflord Member Posts: 797
I would bet on a photographic leak by the 26th.
  • bobabricksbobabricks Member Posts: 1,842
I really hope this set is better than what these sites have been saying or UCS is going to quickly become the Uninspired Crap Series...

  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
It seems clear Lego continues to follow the money on these UCS sets. Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests the UCS models most of us want just dont sell as well as the large playsets they keep giving us instead.
I wish it weren't true, but all evidence suggests it is

Perhaps we should all be thankful for the Ewok Village.  One of those crappy, non-UCS playsets...

I agree. Hopefully they give a Cloud City UCS Playset some love like that soon.

First Cap'n Rex tells us that opinions will be divided (Which most likely means it will appeal to some but not others) and now everyone says it's the same as the old one? Come on people, which is it? Or is it both?
