Winter village is my favourite theme too, by a long shot, and it's really what brought me right back into Lego. I've been longing for a steam train to add to my winter village and was so excited about the rumour.

So I love it but also am a little disappointed at the same time. It is pretty, that's for sure, and my kids will adore it. I will most definitely be buying it, but really did hope for and expect something a bit bigger, at the very least with a passenger car. I really hope that we can add power functions to it and I am already working on thinking up a nice little passenger car to add. However I don't have any trains yet and no experience building any so I will first off be looking to bricklink a (perhaps slightly shorter) version of the original holiday train's passenger car.

Its Winter Village so I'm in this year (passed last year as I had the original) however I can't see it giving my Emerald Night with its very own Christmas Tree Truck a run for its money in my set up - that is when it can be set up again in its full glory, I might just have to wait until my daughter is a little bit older, we are still very much in the Duplo stage . . . . . .

Giggling away at this, which is just what I needed on a Monday!

Maybe I'm a sentimental old thing, but I'm veering more towards "might buy this if the price is right."  God help me, I'm going to get into Lego trains... I have a childhood Thomas the Tank Engine Hornby set in my mother's attic that I could theoretically sell... quick, somebody name some downsides!

Guess you didn't notice the first post at the top of the main forum page then?!

But it's clearly labeled "Expert," which, like all Lego labels, definitively means something.  I mean, there's no ambiguity, right?  Only experts could put this thing together and only experts can appreciate it.  Stay away kids, this is for experts!

I don't know the how. I was simply commenting on the who, what and where.

You see, when a train loves another train very much, they go into the engine shed and.. hey, there's kids reading this!

I remember having a discussion about what the train equivilant of The Mile High Club would be, and the concensus was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I think the train looks great and fits well with the winter theme layout.  Hey at least it isn't a rehash!

So this is why they started to cover the train magnets in plastic a while back. Safe 'couplings'.

    That's to stop unsafe ones.

Kids swallow things. If they swallow two magnets which end up in different places in the gut but then stick together, you've got problems. The idea is to make them stay attached to something that a kid won't swallow in the first place.

I apologise for having to bring this up, but I seem to remember in the dim and distant past references to parody pr0n films, and the one for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was (and please look away, if you are of a nervous disposition) Pretty Sh*tty Gang Bang...

Please only "un-spoil" the above, if you are above 18 years old and not offended by references to unsavoury content.

    I'll get my coat...

Total train/power newbie here. What power functions set / motor would I need for this? I saw there is a motor set, a train motor and a lot of other accessories available. Which one(s) do I need?
  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,477
Definitely getting it, hoping i can work it to get this with the first winter promotion and the power functions stuff (and maybe some extra track) with the second

now i going to find it so so hard not to cave and start a lego train set.
*go's off and look at the Price of the Power + stuff*
    £46.50 to give it power.
it be better to buy a high speed train set.
    Ugg.

^ that's what I did last year, bought the cargo train from Amazon just for the power functions to power the Lone Ranger steam train. Seems crazy to pay so much just for the power function parts when they can be had as part of a good set so much cheaper
  • bandit778bandit778 Member Posts: 2,398
Actually really like this and will probabably get as soon as possible - just to see how I can get it to work in with my other WV sets.
I think that extra track and PF are going to be a must for this.
  • Captain_EyebrowCaptain_Eyebrow Member Posts: 177
Christmas is going to need a two track layout then one to run the new train from the Winter Village to Santa's Workshop and one to run the Emerald Night to drop the visitors to the village!  Actually we might not have room for the tree . . . . . . .

Why was this revealed before the Death Star? They come out at the same time (According to the September Calender). Bring on the Death Star reveal!!!

They should have included a micro Death Star as a toy on the train.

Yes!!! That would have boosted it's sales and been a great easter egg! (Not that it won't sell well)

The back of the box (#10254) indicates what you need:
    - #8879 IR Speed Remote Control
    - #8884 IR Receiver
    - #88000 AAA Battery Box
    - #88002 Train Motor

As other have pointed out, it is probably a better deal to get one of the current City trains: #60051, #60052, #60098 (the first two are usually on discount). You will get all these Power Function parts and extra tracks. Of course, you will only be able to power one train at a time.

Please note that a single #8879 can control more than one train, so with a City train already in hand you will only need #8884, #88000, and #88002.

I have extras of these parts since I got 3 #60051 to add more passenger carts, so I am set for #10254 Winter Holiday Train! :-)

Oh! And don't forget tons of AAA batteries ;-)
(There is a rechargeable battery pack, but I think its very pricey)

As cute as it is, and it is, any steam engine without driver rods is just ridiculous.

This. I'll likely mod mine into a 4-4-0 - on the plus side that shouldn't be too hard.

I would imagine that was one of the reasons that they released a new Holiday Train set; to sucker people into buying other train sets. It is great marketing if you ask me. I have been addicted to Lego trains ever since I purchased my first ever train in 2000.

I like this set, but wish it had come with a few straight tracks as well.

I want to get it and get the power functions for it, but I noticed that the IR receiver takes away a lot of the details of the engine room. I supposed that was necessary, especially since the cable to the battery box would be blocking it, but was perhaps hoping for a better solution.

I may just get it for display as opposed to getting power functions for it.

It can probably be done with just the #88000 battery box and #88002 train motor if cost is a concern. That's what I plan on using for this one as well as #10173

@mustang69 If all you want is to turn it on and off, then yes, you are correct; good point! :-)

I guess if all is wanted is to run around the track at the same speed (around the tree as many have indicated), then there is no need for the IR parts; at least not initially... after you get your hands on a train, sooner than later you will want to "play" with it!

I was toying with the idea of getting a couple extra extension cables (#8886) since they are only $2.99 and seeing if I can rig up a speed control.

Not a fan, too kiddie.  I get realism is hard, but it's almost like it was made by aliens that heard about what a train is, but never actually saw one.  And that PF implementation, ugh.  The IR placement is cringeworthy.  Heck, even the designer was a deflated balloon when he talked about it.  I'm guessing they avoided showing the PF train actually running in the video for fear of how gaudy it looks.

Operating the train is possible without the IR and remote, but how are you going to stop it when you are done? It runs at a pretty good clip if you do not have a bunch of cars slowing it down.

I agree, but I do not think they were going for realism here, especially with only a $100 USD price point. I get why they included track, but...I have so much track now I don't know what to do with it and I definitely don't need more curved track. This train makes TLR Constitution Chase train look good ;)
