So I love it but also am a little disappointed at the same time. It is pretty, that's for sure, and my kids will adore it. I will most definitely be buying it, but really did hope for and expect something a bit bigger, at the very least with a passenger car. I really hope that we can add power functions to it and I am already working on thinking up a nice little passenger car to add. However I don't have any trains yet and no experience building any so I will first off be looking to bricklink a (perhaps slightly shorter) version of the original holiday train's passenger car.
not really liking it. its too colorful and small for my taste!
Maybe I'm a sentimental old thing, but I'm veering more towards "might buy this if the price is right." God help me, I'm going to get into Lego trains... I have a childhood Thomas the Tank Engine Hornby set in my mother's attic that I could theoretically sell... quick, somebody name some downsides!

Kids swallow things. If they swallow two magnets which end up in different places in the gut but then stick together, you've got problems. The idea is to make them stay attached to something that a kid won't swallow in the first place.
Please only "un-spoil" the above, if you are above 18 years old and not offended by references to unsavoury content.
I'll get my coat...
;-)
well, atleast our collections add to each other!
I'm getting it. My first Lego train!
why, Why did you have to have the christmas Set as a god dam train!
now i going to find it so so hard not to cave and start a lego train set.
*go's off and look at the Price of the Power + stuff*
£46.50 to give it power.
it be better to buy a high speed train set.
Ugg.
Why!, Why!! ... Dam you lego. Dam you all to hell!
I think that extra track and PF are going to be a must for this.
- #8879 IR Speed Remote Control
- #8884 IR Receiver
- #88000 AAA Battery Box
- #88002 Train Motor
As other have pointed out, it is probably a better deal to get one of the current City trains: #60051, #60052, #60098 (the first two are usually on discount). You will get all these Power Function parts and extra tracks. Of course, you will only be able to power one train at a time.
Please note that a single #8879 can control more than one train, so with a City train already in hand you will only need #8884, #88000, and #88002.
I have extras of these parts since I got 3 #60051 to add more passenger carts, so I am set for #10254 Winter Holiday Train! :-)
Oh! And don't forget tons of AAA batteries ;-)
(There is a rechargeable battery pack, but I think its very pricey)

I want to get it and get the power functions for it, but I noticed that the IR receiver takes away a lot of the details of the engine room. I supposed that was necessary, especially since the cable to the battery box would be blocking it, but was perhaps hoping for a better solution.
I may just get it for display as opposed to getting power functions for it.
I guess if all is wanted is to run around the track at the same speed (around the tree as many have indicated), then there is no need for the IR parts; at least not initially... after you get your hands on a train, sooner than later you will want to "play" with it!
