One of those lovely Facebook memory statuses this week reminded me of my best bargain. Went to a little village about an half an hour from us for a camping weekend. Wandering round on the Sunday we chanced upon a toy shop that was closed. In the window was Bennys Spaceship #70816 for £40, down from the RRP of £80. I mulled it over on the drive home.

Monday morning I had the day off work so drove back out for when the shop opened. The set was still in the window. Turns out the shop was a temporary one as the local department store was shutting down for building work and a reduction in size. This was all the stock from the toy section that was going. Loads of LEGO anywhere from 25 -50% off. I managed to haggle the set down to just £35. Pretty chuffed with that.

Wednesday: 41052 Ariel's Magical Kiss for £16 at John Lewis (was the last one)
Thursday 5.30pm: 75103 First Order Transporter for £54 at Argos (most stores had 1 left at that point, and it's listed as £80 in the catalogue but comes up as £54 when a search is done).

Popped it my local WH Smith's today and they had a box of series 13 CMF's with about 6 packets left in it, did a quick bag squidge and scored a #71008-3 Unicorn Girl for £2.49

At a local store today I got a deal that made my head spin.  I got (28) 30349 Lego City sports car Poly bag and (28) 30278 Poes X wing Fighter  at my local store for about $17 I am not kidding.  Like I say my head was spinning LMAO Comes to about .005 cents a pieces.  I think I got a good deal :).  6 are not shown because I gave them away.  I am very interested in trading for Polybags I don't have.

My gain is the incompetence of some of the people I work with.  This was at the major retail store I work at.  What happens is the Polybags actually get to $2.99 on clearance and then eventually go down to like .40 a piece.    I have no doubt in my mind that what happened here is these boxes of Polybags got lost in the backroom and no one put them out until last night.  So their incompetence is my gain :D   I get 10 % employee discount as it is but every toy clearance item is an addition 25 % off too.

Went back into WH Smith today and found they had put out a box of series 12 CMF's and after a bit more bag fondling, (plus some funny looks from some of the customers), I found 3 x #71007-14 Piggy Guy and 3 x #71007-16 Spooky Girl.
Even better they were £1.99 each :)

Nice pile, but not for that price, the sorting looks like it's gonna cost you several weeks to reconstruct the sets. He's asking a kilo price of €30,- for this. The sorting looks messy, i see no rare items among the books. A lof of the books are from small cheap sets. Over the last weeks it seems he already sold his sorted prime figures and a few SW sets that problably were build and you get the rest.

Imagine what you could do with this money if you would spend it online by buying the sets you really like instead of digging in this pile for weeks

    My opinion :)

but its a mess!!! i m paying him a visit next week! looks like he already sold all valuable figures...  NOT GOOD!
  • EdmicEdmic Member Posts: 102
Do some homework i'd say, look up al the given sets, see what they cost, and then reduce that price by a lot since it seems all those pieces are mixed, and he guarantees that all those parts are there, but he gives no guarantee off course the moment you step out of the door. If sorting would be that easy and it be all complete, than why does he not sell it like he did with the other pieces?

You couldn't pay me to take on a job like that, I would pass at any price.

I always wonder how someone thinks he can guarantee that all is complete and no pieces are damaged when it looks like this?
  • bandit778bandit778 Member Posts: 2,398
    @brumey
Looks like the internal frame work for #6211 but it must have been a blitz of a dismantle job as the two white frames are supposed to be joined together.

    :(

I was thinking the same already a couple of times, all of these deals in stores are absolutely unthinkable of in the Netherlands, Germany or Switzerland (i'm Dutch in .ch)

Do American employees know so little about what they sell? I mean if i would work somewhere and they'd offer those things for such prices, than the shelf would be empty before the store even opens :)

Wow. My Toys 'R Us just puts old Lego sets in the clearance section...at FULL price.  Which wouldn't be all that bad if they were really old like that one, but it's usually just Ultra Agents, Bionicle and other junk like that.

Eventually they are supposed to be pulled off the shelves and then show in TRU's system as a $0.03 item.  I would expect that the LotR sets will be zombified-creeping their way to that status.

A little more insight on my finding:

I had previously noticed the Town Square set the last time I went to that store (around 2 months ago), it seemed weird that a discontinued set would still be available in the shelves! So I scanned it, and after realizing it was marked at full price, I decided to pass on it (especially since I had already bought City Square #60097).

As I was looking for "surprises" to brag about yesterday at TRU (and Walmart before that), I saw it again, no tag like the last time, and decided to scan it again. When I saw the price (if you can call it a price), I held on to it like there was no tomorrow and went straight to the cashiers. The lady in the register couldn't believe the price either and told me "if I had known it, I would have bought it myself." Well, who wouldn't?

Hopefully this will not be my last great LEGO finding :)

    £300?

If you got it for £30 - excellent buy, and I hate you.

How did the visit go, i noticed the lot is still for sale.

I guess seller is overestimating the kilo price for these lots, and thinks that time to sort things should not be of consideration. Roughly i'd say if there's lots of SW and the books are there for a quick proper setlist i'd go to a max of 15,- per kilo, so 900,-

My lot was a huge mess, but i paid 350 CHF,- And have by now managed to get this out of it, still around 10K pieces left. http://brickset.com/sets/ownedby-Edmic

I stopped in at a local Game Stop, and came away with # 30279, # 30168,  and # 30320.  They also gave me a Dimensions poster.  I really like that store!

Stopped by a few Walmarts & got several sets at 50% off when something out of the ordinary caught my eye. Price was retail but since it retired in Dec 2014 "home with me it did come"

There's a whole bunch of undesirable LotR sets at TRU in Rochester if you want them!
