Wife and I went to see Captain America today, and while I was waiting for the movie to start I was messing around with Brickseek (we were in another city about an hour from home) and noticed the Target around the block had a #75919 IR listed as being in stock for $90.  We headed over after the movie and no dice.  No marking on the shelf for the set, no clearance aisle to speak of, nothing marked anywhere.  As my last ditch effort I started looking behind the big sets on the bottom shelf, and there behind two Millenium Falcons was the Indominus Rex!  Marked $90, but the box looked as though it had been opened and resealed.  I took it up front and the cashier offered to knock an additional 10% off.  I asked whether we could check the contents to make sure the dinosaur was still there and we dumped the bag out on the counter and there he was!  Not bad for $80!

Then on the drive home my wife mentioned she had a $5 off $40 coupon for KMart, so we stopped at a store in a small town, and there was a 75918 T Rex that rang up for $35.50!  Grabbed a mixel I figured  my nephew would like and we were out the door with a $30 T Rex!

Not a bad day for my first Jurassic World sets!

@pharmjod all in the last two weeks and yes all thrown away.
sometimes it's a case of right place, right time.
the fire breathing castle also had the dragon wagon, magic shop and one other castle related set.
tge black seas barracuda had six crew missing and one other part (that I haven't got!) was missing.
The ninjago set had the bags open but all complete!

Sorry but I still don't get it. People throw Lego away? In the trash just like that? And even unopened stuff? I have never heard of such a thing. What kind of neighbourhood do you live in?

Over here, when people don't want or need their Lego anymore, they either put it on ebay, offer it via newspaper/local ads or if they have no monetary interest in it they give it away for charity like kindergarten/school raffles/oxfam style sales.

And how do you get that stuff? Do you go around on collecting day actively searching through people's bins? On the small chance that there might be Lego stuff in them?

I just can't wrap my head around it.

I've been wondering about this too.  I can't imagine just going through general dumpsters or "skips" looking for Lego.  My guess is maybe they somehow found a store or stores that toss badly damaged boxes and check back from time to time?
I'd like to take the opportunity to point out that I don't make a habit of 'skip diving.' The Death Star was pulled out by a friend who owns the skip business!

I think this is the winner. Anyone here ever got a better deal? I mean that is more than 95% under the standard RRP.

And the person at the checkout didn't say anything?

You would NEVER get that over here. Every cashier would know that they don't sell a set that normally costs hundreds of Euros for almost nothing. Even far smaller mistakes don't go unnoticed. I once wanted to buy something with an RRP of 200 Euro, labelled at 70 Euro. The cashier gave me a look as if I had changed the label, called the manager and found out that the label was indeed wrong (store mistake, just my luck), it was meant to read 170 Euro. Needless to say I didn't buy the thing in the end. I get the feeling that everything over 50 percent discount raises eyebrows and suspicion at the checkout as such discounts are very uncommon, unless it is something really crappy they want to get rid of. Lego usually doesn't fall into that category though ;-)

I think it just proves that cashiers in America do not care about store profits.

They are far too worried about the customer shooting them, if they say anything bad.

If the Manager later querries the sale, the checkout person just says
    "Computer said $12. "  :) :) :)

I'm really glad to hear that the average peon employee is so much smarter in Germany and other countries than the USA. And for the record, getting shot is probably the last thing any cashier is worried about. If you think cashiers in any country really care about store profits you are naive. I would also wager one Walmart in the  "ghetto" is busier than most stores in Europe at any given time. The cashiers don't really have much time to focus on possible mis prices. They worry more about an item being more expensive than marked and customers getting aggravated over that.

But by all means keep the stereotypes and generalizations coming.

Don't mix things up. I never made that comment about shooting. That was Venunder.

And it has got nothing to do with being smarter or anything. Simple common sense.

Oh and by the way, the experience I described happened before Christmas, which is the busiest time of the year in shops over here. Guess it would be similar in the US. If there is a computer error like this one (and it definitely must have been one, there is no way in hell Walmart wanted to sell that set at 12 bucks), it will get noticed. Usually ;-)

  • KiltyONealKiltyONeal Columbus, Ohio, USAMember Posts: 27
I don't think it was a computer error.  Some Walmart stores have a markdown schedule where items on clearance will be marked down every few weeks until they reach an extremely low price like the one above.  I've seen this on several Lego sets, but they're almost always out of stock before they reach these crazy prices.  I got lucky on the one above.

It's a weird system and policy that they have, but hey, it's Walmart!

One of the many factors used in determining markdowns is storage space. It costs a retailer money every day they have an item in stock. The larger the item, the more it costs the retailer to store it, either in the warehouse or on the shelf. Retail shelf space is more expensive than warehouse space, so when inventory gets below a certain point it is cheaper to blow out the inventory than it is to continue paying to store it.

KiltyONeal, thanks for the info, that is very interesting. This doesn't happen over here unfortunately (then again, we don't have Walmart).

I have wondered about this just recently, when seeing the oft-mentioned Ant-Man Final Battle set in our local toy store. They have three of them sitting on the shelf that have been there for months, like most of the super hero sets (which are not very popular here). They are still marked at their RRP of 24.99 Euro, which is also very expensive, especially in relationship with the RRP of that set in other countries, and probably one reason why they don't sell. Anyway, I took one and asked at the checkout whether there was the chance of a bargain deal. Sometimes one gets lucky but this time they said no, only select items get a discount. These "select items" currently were two large Ninja Turtles sets, can't remember the set numbers, at a discount of around 15 to 20%. That's about the best you normally get.

The strange thing is that sets like those super hero ones sit on the shelves undiscounted for months, and then suddenly within a week they are all gone. Does the store send them back to Lego unsold? Or where could they go? Confused.

  • datsunrobbiedatsunrobbie West Haven , CTMember Posts: 1,487
^Sounds like exactly the same thing I have seen at Walgreens here. They had #31037 sitting on the shelf for quite a while at full RRP of $24.99. In February I picked up 2 @$14.99 and left one on the shelf. In early April I picked that last set up for $7.49, and 4 more for $2.49 each at a Walgreens the next town over, along with several other sets that were marked down to 10% of original RRP. I now make it a point to stop in there once a week.

A cashier at Walmart definitely doesn't care about profits. It's Walmart. It's THE massive retailer and there is virtually no way 99% of the cashiers that work there have any idea how much a LEGO set should actually be. And they shouldn't. The store almost literally sells everything.

Picked up a loose 10198   Tantive IV on ebay for a Buy it now of $150. It was missing about 40 pieces but they were pretty common pieces. Put in a Best offer of $130 and the seller accepted. I was super stoked to get it for that price and I didn't even really look at the pictures to much after I bought it.  I finally got it yesterday and opened it up to find a smooth haired Princess Leia. I have been wanted one for awhile and I just stumbled on this one. I"m super excited now, I finally got a 10198 a Tantive IV and Smooth haired leia for $130.

It was a find, but not one I took up. Went to Prague Mon to Fri this week and in the Sparky's Darky toy shop in the Nove Smichov shopping centre near Andel metro station (in case anyone was wanting to get one on a forthcoming visit), I saw 2 x SW Jabba's Sail Barge #75020 and a SW Ghost #75053 at retail. At the other end of Prague I went in the unofficial Lego shop that looks like an official Lego shop and saw many a ridiculously priced retired set, including an unopened #10179 UCS MF in a very tatty box for about £6100.

Soooo happy right now. Guy on Ebay sold a pack of spare parts for some Hogwarts Castle. Don't care for Harry Potter, but I am on the search for sand green 1 x 8 bricks. So I look at the picture and see 3 of those bricks in the front. It was 50 Euros, and the picture wasn't very good, but I saw some more 1 x 8 bricks in the back. Couldn't make out the color but I was almost certain they were sand green. So I went and bought it. The package just arrived and I found 53! 1 x 8 sand green bricks in it. Plus the whole Hogwarts stuff I don't really need in light tan and sand green. But lots of it! I am so happy right now. I thought it would take me years to collect enough bricks to build my green grocer.... found sand green hinges too by the way... It was a professional seller and he sells a lot of lego. I guess he didn't know that these were so rare :-)

I managed to pick up #79014 Dol Guldur Battle BNIB for £38.99 plus P&P on eBay, which is a bit of a steal, given that the RRP was £69.99... This doesn't seem to be a very sought-after set, as I've seen eBay lots of this set advertised for £59.99 BIN and still taking a while to go...

I recently bought several lots in-person from a "professional seller". For steal prices. He could talk the reselling talk, but when it came to knowing what was valuable, fell about as short as a minifig. Thought Bionicle was worthless. Didn't know how valuable Aayla Secura and Batman I minifigs are. Lost money on a lot because he didn't want to deal with the smokey smell and minor discoloration.
  • monstblitzmonstblitz Alexandria, VAMember Posts: 593
It's not always about being ignorant of value.  Sometimes the "pros" just want to sell stuff quickly or sell stuff to other Lego enthusiasts at good prices.  Not too long ago a guy sold me a 100% complete 21103 (Lego Delorean) with box and instructions for a little less than retail.  He knew exactly what it was worth, but he said he almost always just sells sets for retail if he is not longer interested in them.  I think he was happy knowing I'd be building and enjoying it.

No I really think he had no idea. I looked over the other lots he had and seems to have no clue what belongs together. He is pretty expensive too. and he has a lot of old stuff. He even included 2 bags of pieces that weren't in the picture. some pharao stuff and a lot of slave pieces (no star wars fan, so no idea which one, but the one that has some 1 x 8 bricks in it too....
