What is your biggest Lego blunder?

happyskunkyhappyskunky Member Posts: 133

I am sure mine isn't as interesting as some of the stories you guys have to tell.   I have about 35 Polybags hanging on my wall right next to me when I order from Amazon and Ebay.  Yet I have ordered the same ones 2x now which I do not want doubles.  DOH....

I was in the process of buying a 10224 Town Hall from a very nice woman on Craiglist, and I'm racing over to meet her in another part of town because we are having company at our house, and I didn't really mention to my wife that I'm going to be a bit late to buy Lego.

I get there, buy the set, and she says that she is also selling a few other sets including a Cafe Corner for basically MSRP.  I say, well, let me think about it, can you check if you have a manual or box.  I just remember thinking, I've really got to get home before my wife kills me because I'm late because I'm buying Lego!

Needless to say, by the time I realized my error an hour later, I texted her an hour and it was sold!

I think not buying as many UCS MF's as we could when they were on sale. End of story...Might as well close the thread ;)

Only one? I sold five for about £6-8 each, along with Wolverine and Magneto. Although I had only paid £9 for the whole set and thought doubling my money on just the figures was a good idea.

I did also trade a White Boba poly bag for a set of Simpsons S2 as I couldn't find them near me at the time ...

But then the opposite of it, selling off the figures from the clone trooper battle set and forgetting about the parts. Then realising I had 20x those white skis for cafe corner ...

That ten-year period when I didn't buy much Lego? The one that coincided with Vikings, Fantasy Castle, Farm and Monster Fighters? And the beginning of modulars?

    Yeah.

I sold a number of Harry Potter sets I got cheaply but decided I didn't want. If I had waited a year or two I would've quadrupled my money

I'm not sure "Failing to see into the future" counts as a blunder, to be honest. My biggest blunder was to get back into Lego, and then stop paying attention to what was being released... Why?

Missing out on the first three Modular's before getting into the line.  Also, not buying Emerald Night.

Leaving the hobby before returning as an adult. I missed out on the tail end of 9V, start of the modulars, and some of the other niceties.

My club members talk about the time the Lego store had a pallet of "scratch and dent" 10179's and you have as many as you wanted. Everybody did and there was still a bunch left over.

    3. See the smiley faces. I didn't see him getting this popular....he's just Spider-Man with swords and guns. Btw, I watched Deadpool and that movie has made ALL the other Marvel movies look like sh-t. Thanks a lot Wade....

When we moved nearly 3 years ago, I was packing up the modulars.  As I picked up the apartment portion of the pet shop, the bottom floor slipped out of my hands and landed on the roof of the town hall, damaging the base plate, and about 3 pieces from each set.  Last month I finally got the last of the parts I needed to rebuild the sets.

Seeing 10123 (Cloud City) in the local toy shop and not buying it there and then. Went back the next Saturday but it was gone. Did pretty much the same thing with 10197 (Fire Brigade) and the original Sandcrawler (10144).

This one time I thought the instructions were calling out a black and then three steps later it turned out to be dark bluish gray. Man, the sleepless nights I have about that one.

There have been a few times now where I have gotten on a collection reduction kick and ended up cutting a little too deep.

Sellers remourse kicks in a few months later and I find myself in the market looking to rebuy something I just sold.

It's the worst. Those purchases are always tainted with the stench of shame.

Buying 5 Exosuits to sit on for a year and sell/trade later. Maybe in 5 years i'll get RRP + ebay costs back. That and scoffing at the retail price of a UCS MF just as I was coming out of my dark age (and doing a similar thing with UCS AT-ST).

Not getting out to the yard sales earlier this morning.  Got to a table to hear a lady say, "Boy my Lego went fast!"  Turns out she had some complete Star Wars sets, probably older that were complete and boxed with manuals.

I didn't buy town hall.  I had it in my hands, and being that the pet shop was the older modular I bought that instead.

Not realizing that I would collect most of the Architecture buildings and not buying #21010 Robbie House when it was retail.  It will remain a hole in the collection, but I am fine with that.

Not leaving my Dark Age until about a year ago.

Wouldn't be so bad, but when we moved to San Diego about *four* years ago, I started browsing through the local Lego store.
Had the chance to get Haunted House, Town Hall, Grand Emporium, Robie House, and Farnsworth House for normal prices. Actually remember paying attention to the Haunted House and thinking how cool it was.

    Doh!

While building the #76023 that I bought used (so it was not separated into the number labeled bag which was the first mistake) I mixed up by using 16 1x1 black slope 30 instead of 16 black slope 2 x 1 45. I didn't realize until after I was about 90% complete and realized I had way to many 2 x 1 leftover and then had to attempt to dismantle the ship as little as without completely taking it apart.

Waiting too long to start buying the modular line.  Putting a motorized Hogwarts express 10132 back on the shelf when it was still in stores in 2005.  My 5 year of dark ages from 2005-2010.

On a Tuesday afternoon, seeing three #76039 on shelf at a local Target & thinking they have a 25% off sale starting Thursday, I'll come back first thing Thursday morning... Rocket Raccoon must shop there.

During the last Harry Potter wave, when I was still sort of in my dark ages, I saw many of the sets on shelves and thought they were neat, but I never bought any. Of course, there were also several modulars I missed this way too. Also, when I was coming out of my dark ages, I wasn't very diligent about collecting Lord of the Rings, so now there are a few gaps in my Fellowship I haven't filled.

Not buying Black Pearl at retail. Then not buying it on Black Friday. And skipping Hogwarts when I found three on clearance.

Paid much more later on for both sets.

My philosophy changed after that to "if you're sure you want it, just get it." Those were the two I knew I wanted, but hesitated for some reason.

^O that is a good one. I passed on the Pearl at Walmart for $69 and the Target sale of $75. Really dumb. I did get the QAR and loved building that, not sure why I passed on the Pearl especially at those prices. Next movie it will cost $199 and only be slightly smaller so we will still have a chance to get one.

Time at events, there is never enough to have all the conversations you want.

On a side note and I'm amazed at the price of #6866. I've not looked in the SH stash from 2012 for a long time but there must be a few in there.

It might be the same price and smaller, or larger and more expensive, bot not both.

That thing is just weird. Not that bad when you compare it to its nearly decade-old counterpart, but overpriced when you check the parts per dollar.

I have two. 1. Liquidizing most of my SW which resulted in the loss of a few USC sets. 2. Spending too much on parts on Bricklink...."sigh".
