@Don I would say the same!  I build very sizes of Lego sets and enjoy them all!  Each set offers something different as you say!

Not really building but about to start disassembly of the UCS Falcon.  Trying to think of an effective and organized way to do it.  Trying to sort by exact brick type would take too much space as this won't be a one sitting effort.  Perhaps by color and brick category (plate, tile, brick, etc)?

I'm going to have to do that again as well, as I discovered an extra small set in the old LEGO boxes, while down at my parents' house last week: 6803: Space Patrol

I had been puzzling about why there seemed to be "2 extra Light Gray Wedge, Plate 8 x 4 Wing" (L & R) in the box, as I knew that we had 8, from the two #6970 sets that my brother and I had... Then I found a "Blue Antenna 1 x 4",  two of "Blue Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with 3 Loudspeakers / Space Positioning Rockets", two of " Blue Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Clip Light - Thin Ring" and things were quickly falling into place.

The odd thing is that I don't remember owning that set at all but, given the year it came out, it is possible that I was falling into my first Dark Age and it belonged to my brother... Well, it's mine now! :-)

@crazycarl Enjoy building and post pics! :-)

up for grabs soon at my bricklink store!
Ahhhhhh! I had this listed as my favourite set ever on another thread on here. Parents eventually threw it out a few years back by mistake. Loved this set so much. Model Team stuff was very cool at the time

I disassembled mine using the instructions in reverse order and stored the parts in ziplock bags labeled with the corresponding steps.

And if you don't get on with him, hide one of part #32532. It will drive him nuts  looking through the box of parts when he gets to stage 13 of the build.

I've just finished bag #8 of #70738 Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty and Jang is right: The movement behind the engine reconfiguration is a thing of real beauty (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myOdvwhKloE&feature=youtu.be).
I fitted the *huge* bowsprit, but it's still a large ship and very impressive, even though still incomplete and it dwarfs #70603 Raid Zeppelin, unsurprisingly.
I'm going to be restrained and save bags #9 & #10 for tomorrow.

I thought of just sorting by color but he seems pretty intimidated with having to look through 5000+ parts. To me that's part of the fun but I just want to make the build experience fun for him.

I had the fence issue also, but it did not prevent me from finishing the built. That is not the case with the Grand Emporium; without the hole on top, it cannot be placed on the set, so the building is incomplete.
right then!, thats a, Phone Lego.
and explain what happened, Lego Should send you the right part.
Note it is not going to be fast, i had a replacement part take weeks.

I requested a replacement through their website right away. Thanks anyway.
I just wonder how common it is to have missing parts. First time it happen to me.

Got the missing piece (#6047840) from LEGO yesterday. It took 2 1/2 weeks since I requested a replacement through their website. #10211 Grand Emporium is now complete.

    Batwing 76046

The gold parts were supposed to be black. I actually opened the bag with the original parts about week ago and for whatever reason quit construction and left the loose bits in the big Lego plate. Now for whatever reason, being it the cats, the daughter, the wife, or me, those parts have long since vanished. So Wayne and Stark brokered a deal leaving the newest incarnation of the Batwing equipped with Stark Tech(Hulkbuster plates)!

I don't have a creative bone in my body. This is from JK Brickworks. Designed by Jason Allemann. I downloaded the parts list into my Bricklink wanted list from Rebrickable.

I forgot to put the link on my original post to Jason's website.  Oops.

Ah, yes, he of the Ideas Maze and his incredible Sisyphus Kinetic Sculpture, among other things. Odd that this one slipped my mind, as I was only looking at his MOCs a week or two back.
    Either way, it's a great model. :-)

^ You have eight more planets to go...

    Actually, it's only seven!

They decided that Pluto wasn't a proper planet after all, something about it not being able to clear material from it's own orbit, so it's been re-classified as a 'dwarf-planet'. It's a bit of a shame really as I've always liked it, but at least it does halt the endless growth of Disney, albeit briefly!  If you're interested, here's the official explanation from NASA:

    http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/stories/nasa-knows/what-is-pluto-k4.html

Oh, and on topic, I've just broken my hip which is quite impressive at the age of 40.  I must say how amazing the NHS were - I had an epidural and was awake during the operation which was quite an interesting experience to say the least!  So I'll be recovering for quite a while and I'm hoping that I may be able to do a small amount of building at some point, which will be a nice change!

Just done the Batmobile from #76052, i'll tackle Wayne Manor at the weekend and then think how best to bulk it all up as I bought a separated Wayne Manor portion of the Batcave set from an Ebayer for £48, not bad for 1002 pieces, most of which will be put to good use.
  • monkeyhangermonkeyhanger Member Posts: 3,170
Lobot: Ouch! Your operation reminds me of one I had a few years ago. I had a "trigger thumb" on my left hand and had an operation to remove it. The surgeon asked if I was squeamish and I said no, so they positioned mirrors so I could watch their every move, it was a surreal experience, didn't feel like they were working on me at all.
  • tallblocktootallblocktoo Member Posts: 497
@Lobot  Interesting experience I would say to see that but not desirable! All the best in the healing!  Nice to get down time I suppose but would rather not have the injury I am sure.

    Thanks @monkeyhanger -

Both of my legs were 'locked' in a frame and the surgeon worked from one side through a plastic screen.  I could see some of what he was doing but it amazed me how much physical effort was involved.  It wasn't painful but I could certainly feel the force being used to put the bolts into place!  Apparently my bones are really strong, which is rather ironic.... I've damaged myself quite a bit in the past, mainly due with being raised on a farm, but this was on a different level.

The good news is that everything went really well and I was discharged within 3 days.  Hopefully I should be off crutches in 6 weeks if it all goes to plan :-)

Yeah that is pretty fast considering the set's size.
I've become completely fascinated by this post now.
What is an average building speed?
I am trying to work out what my times are for some bigger builds done in one sitting.  I reckon I work at a bit above 500 pieces an hour - as an example I built the Sea Cow #70810 in 5 hours.
So I would allow myself about 2 - 2.5 hours to build that set if I was aiming for it in one sitting.  Does that make me fast?  What do other people clock in at?

I know, right? I was thinking the same thing when @CHAINSAW asked me. I built that model over a few nights (half an hour here, an hour there, 45 minutes in between and the rest on the night I finished it) and I have to confess that by 02:00 I wasn't really at my most productive. So I might've been able to build it quicker, but that's not really the point is it? I know there are some speed-building competitions (there was one at my office last year, which I missed) but generally at home we're building for pleasure and I like to appreciate how the model is coming together.

I'm trying to remember how quickly I built the Tower of Orthanc and other big sets now...

ok this subject (how fast you build or how fast you built (setnamehere) set.
i agree its a interesting topic.
i have been known for taking a set and steam rolling it all in one go.
i also been know to build bag by bag. #70751 took me a week.
i still have 1/2 of the #10218 pet shop (the town house side) to build. as i have done this build 2 time before. it will be interesting to time it. (all still in it's # bag's.)
i also need to mirror build this set to. so i kind of interested just how fast i can pull it off.
but not today. i will need to set aside lot of time to do this.
to be on the save side.

@Lobot, sorry to hear that! I hope people decide you need Lego to help you convalesce and bring you plenty of sets! I have to say, being awake for your surgery sounds fascinating, but I would be much to much of a wuss to make the most of it myself!

I never worry about how long a build takes as I usually have to fit in a bag from a set when I get a spare bit of time and when I finish a set in one sitting I almost feel let down that it is over.
With the way I build my sets, taking the time of a build from first brick to the last brick, I probably work out as one of the slowest builders, as the Sandcrawler took me 2 weeks to finish and the Bricklinked S.S.D. took me 3 and a half weeks (all parts were in baggies in 1 big plastic container).
  • MaffyDMaffyD Member Posts: 3,577
    edited April 2016

Also, if the bags aren't numbered, it will take longer. And there's the whole issue of sorting. First of all, does sorting actually make the build quicker? It certainly makes it more enjoyable (once sorted I mean - the process of sorting I find a little tedious unless I find a part that's really unique). But taking the time to sort might actually slow down some builds.

Then you have to consider how repetitive the build is. Orthanc can be fairly repetitive, because you repeat some things on all three sides. The Star Destroyer is symmetrical, so once one side is done you have a good idea of how the other side comes together and it speeds up (unless you take a break like I did and start forgetting when you return).

After that, if there are a lot of fiddly small bits, or just awkward building methods ( #4504 Falcon I'm looking at you here) it can take a while to get through just a couple of pages. Unless you have thin fingers, which I do not.

Finally, when you have 'help' it will slow you down. My youngest was involved in the beginning stages of the SD, and it was slow (but oh so enjoyable - as the minifigures were built first and he really plays the heck out of them).

Obviously, none of this matters if you're not bothered how long you take!

I'm the same... I ration myself with big sets and do perhaps one, or maybe two, bags per night, so that the experience lasts longer.

Last night, I started #9474 The Battle of Helms Deep and stopped after two bags. I then spent another couple of hours dismantling and storing a few Ninjago and Minecraft sets, so that I have room for #9474.

I don't have much room to display models, as I'm only allowed them in my study and most of that space is taken up by my 5 modulars and #70738 Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty, which I think will be a long-term display item.

    I got a bit off-topic there... ;-)

Thanks @tallblocktoo, @MaffyD, & @catwrangler - considering the damage I did to myself, I'm actually feeling surprisingly well - I've just spent most of the last few days feeling very sleepy!  Anyway, I'm determined to be sensible and to do everything I can to ensure it heals correctly so I won't be building anything for several weeks at the earliest.   I've can't praise the NHS enough, they've been nothing short of superb.

And apologies, again, for going off-topic :-)
