and have been for the past days.
is my Pet Shop MOC, i now have a name for the MOC but will keep that to my self until i am finished and ready to brag..(cough).... show the finished model to you all.
it looks good and it coming along well. i can see me spending a good part of my time in little details until i am happy with it, but still got a bit to go before i can get to the small details.
Mrs. xwingpilot and I will be building this together tomorrow without the kids :)
(...grumble...)
So far it has been a very fun build.
The build
It was nice to have a proper instruction book with a spine. Take note TLG - this should be standard for ALL the more expensive sets. This is my first System-scale set, and I thought the build was surprisingly like a UCS build - especially with the Technic lift arms for the landing gear mechanism and interior cross-bracing. Not too many stickers too - thoroughly enjoyable.
Minifigures
A great selection of minifigures - Endor Leia, two Endor Rebel Troopers, Endor Han and the latest Chewbacca. All fully armed with 'proper' weapons too (none of this stud shooter nonsense). The only thing I didn't like was Leia's poncho. Her torso printing is really good so I'll be leaving that off.
The completed model
With the wings deployed in flight mode this set looks great (and it's large). Even though it can't be displayed in flight mode (without MOCing a substantial stand) it also looks superb in landing configuration. I really like the detail of the movable landing gear and the cannons. It can certainly hold it's own when displayed alongside larger UCS sets. There's only two things I don't like. Firstly it's that the set is a little tail-heavy with the landing gear deployed. As an engineer, if I was the designer I wouldn't have been satisfied with that. Secondly, I think the interior detail is a bit meh. Having said that, I really appreciate that all of the minifigures and equipment can be seated and stowed inside. These are quite minor criticisms though.
In summary, I'm very pleased with this set. Hopefully I'll get time at the weekend to take some photos and upload them to my photostream...
I've built a ton of sets in the past couple weeks as I recently rediscovered my collection. Everything is horribly mixed up and most sets are missing at least 1-2 parts though :(. Some of the larger/cooler sets I've fished out of the random bins include #6973, #6278, #7317, and #6769.
In terms of new purchases, I have #6957 and #6898 sitting in the "to-build" queue. They showed up over the weekend.
Also, finished working on the Affleckmobile - more modifications to the nose to flatten it and sink those hotrod exhaust thingies closer down to the rest of the hull, and armour for the rear wheels:
I think I saw in a Jangbricks review that he built a simple stand out of transparent half cylinders. I bought some for mine, but I haven't built it yet so I am not sure if it will work. I would prefer to display it in flight mode.
Did you notice at all if it would be hard to extend the landing gear? I'd like to make the legs a little longer so the ramp can come further down, allowing minifigs to actually go up and down the ramp.
This picture from the Brickset database shows it retracted:
In addition, I think the ramp would need to be longer if the landing gear was longer (to maintain a sensible angle when down).
The landing gear was clearly a problematic feature on #10212 as well. In that set it was a separate assembly without a mechanism that was fitted instead of the stand when you wanted to display it in landing configuration.
as Dr who is not a numbered bag set. you should only have 1 spare of 1x1 size items.
Not sure how accurate it is, but the Bricklink inventory for #21304 lists 28 small parts as extras with this set. Have not built mine yet so I cannot confirm this.
And that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :-)
I've pre-ordered the blu-ray but it isn't released until the 18th...
Now on to bags 3!
That's a great set! I actually bought it twice as I was going to try and combine 2. I just havn't gotten round to it yet. But for me it has pretty much as many pieces I can handle at once (no numbered bags) without spending as much time sorting as building. That being said, #10212 is a whole different matter! I'm not looking forward to dismantling it before I move only to rebuild it a few days later... or am I?
there are AFOL's who buy chima for anything more then a box of spare parts?
See, there are worse things than admitting you own just a bit of Chima.
the time it is going to take me to build this set just jumped. a lot.
well i will know when i am done and will let you know.
edit,
looking at the set i only have 3 bag's with parts small enough to have spare parts.
up for grabs soon at my bricklink store!
4 type's of part have been split over 2 bag's.
so as lego split them in to 2 bag yes there are 2 spares of them type of parts.
why? no idea.
but thanks for pointing that out to me, now i not going to spend 2 hours going back over the model to work out ware i missed a 1x1. lol.
but then i showed him my remaining black bricks
it got out of hand!
so over half way now.
it look's good.
and the build is picking up speed now there are less part's to hunt over.
i am surprised by the shear level of detail in this set. Hell a item i had believed to be a poster is a t-shirt. in a cupboard that you can open. with a mirror on the cupboard door. and that is just one detail picked at semi-random. i say "semi-random" as it the only one i can explain in word's i can spell with out 20 minutes of hunting for the right spelling. is this day 3 or day 4 of this build? i have lost count.
look's great and i love it.
no idea what to build next.
i got a good mix to pick from. 12 dimensions set's, 2 city set's, 7 nexo knights set's,
1 star wars, #10243 and well as some set's i picked up for part's but may build just to say i have built it. minus the stickers.
so back to watching amazon for price drops on the remaining 4 dimensions fun packs i dont own yet. i am after Aquaman but i am not paying £12 for him.
Actually my "test" after doing PR was to build a 3-in-1 Lakeside Lodge just to see if the PR had ruined me for simpler builds. It had not - I found the Lodge to be enjoyable as well, although clearly a little different experience. :-)
