Buying the Firehouse 21108

Hi,
I'm gearing up to buy the #21108 Ghostbusters Firehouse, just wondered what people's views are on when best to buy.
I've been saving VIP points so I will be using those, but possibly now is the right time with double points? I know by using points I will miss some of the benefit of getting double points, but can't afford the full cost outlay.
So, thoughts please, is there a freebie around the corner that I should hold on for etc? Thanks

There is a freebie now, the chicken suit guy.

I'd hold off until I decide whether I want #21108 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 or #75827 Firehouse Headquarters.

Set #21108 is the Ecto-1, not the firehouse.

I suspect the Chicken Suit guy isn't a sufficient freebie to justify the GB headquarters on its own. I'd go with the double points, given the high price. Even if you have £50 of points to use, that'll still be £225 for the set, which will give you 450 points, worth £22.50. That's pretty decent.

The firehouse will be around for several 2x VIP yet though, and some decent promos will turn up through the year.  I'd probably wait and see what comes up if you don't need it right now (which you clearly don't, as you asked).

I'm in the same boat to be honest. I thought the double points would be the best time to buy - but I havn't yet. I just grabbed the Brick Bank instead so far.

I'm a bit more worried about not-so-recent expensive sets that are in my backlog, like the SOH.

I got one of these last weekend, but haven't built it yet.

Oh, and would this be a good place to post this photo?

It is a fair point, are there older sets that you'd rather have now and could possibly wait on the Firehouse? Since it was just released, it won't be going anywhere quite yet.

I definitely want to pick it up eventually, but I hate that price. But I also want the Brick Bank, and the Batcave, both higher prices that I don't like also...so definitely will take some thinking.

    Good luck to you!

Fair comment, that will teach me to look up the right set number...

Thanks for comments so far. The current chicken suit guy freebie is not too attractive as I have cmf version. Think I will wait on the next double points promo to see if it's a better combination. How many times do double points happen per year, anybody know?
  • snowhitiesnowhitie Member Posts: 3,076
^Twice a year, other time is in autumn of in not mistaken.
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 981
Traditionally October-ish. Although a few years ago they did offer double points on Brick Friday and sometime in December, but I think with the popularity surging, they likely won't try to catch more sales as often since so many people are paying MSRP for everything.

That is an expensive amount of plastic sitting there. Are they all for you?!

Not all mine unfortunately. As I said, I only have the one, which is sitting waiting to be built (I'm building the Brick Bank first).

I thought it made for an impressive photo though.

1st my ears are on fire. some one has to have Summon me here with use of my name. :p

    Any how Joking aside.

i count 14 sets. so that is 64876 Lego pieces. btw more lego pieces then i own right now. brickset tell's me i own 48791 pieces.

    Q. Would i like to make a Sized up build of the fire house with that?
    A. OH HELL YES!.

    Q. could i afford it?
    A. No not even in my dreams.

and for anyone who not done the maths on this.
all that would cost you "£3849.86"
i would have to go with out lego or buying any stuff for myself in any form for about 2 years or longer. to buy all that.
from what you lot know of me on here, i think you can all agree that, that would never come to pass.

No you wouldn't. You'd have all  those VIP points to use, and if you bought during a double points promotion...

About as impressive as a LEGO store shelf to me... except in this case it's sort glossed over by the fact it's an obvious reseller "haul" and that I can't help but think of 13 other people that may not have been able to purchase one.

You say that like the set is sold out and Lil Timmy can't get one anymore.

Any reseller worth a darn will be busy investing in stuff that might retire soon, not something that came out three months ago. There are valid reasons to be irked by resellers but if this is a reseller haul, all he deserves is a chuckle of pity and a slight shake of the head in bewilderment.

Sad that people just assume that it's a reseller 'haul', or that I have them all.

They're not all mine (only one was), and every one of them went to different people. 14 sets (I think), for 14 different people.

Can we please now stop slyly having a go at me, and just admire the Lego goodness in the photo? Is that too much to ask? It is, after all, what I posted the photo for - because that many of that set in one place is quite something to behold.

I'm more curious whether they arrived individually in the size box located in the lower right hand side of the pic.  [email protected] used a larger box for mine and it wasn't snug enough causing the corners to be rubbed and slight creasing.

I'm not too worried as I intend to build it, but a box made just the same size as the set would have been better.
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,260
No, two per outer box. I took one home and have it here with the label on the side.

@Paperballpark - It wasn't a go at you. I saw the comment that it was just the one for yourself, so no worries.

Just general musings to myself. If I see 14 stacked up on each other it's hard to imagine it going to 14 different people, but it's great that it is! :)

Yeah. Maybe those sets will get sold to other people eventually but those 14 other people won't be able to take advantage of double VIP points. Kind of a dick move.

You don't know the circumstances to be able to say it was a 'dick move'. I'm afraid I'm not going to divulge the circumstances either. rLUG members may have an idea though.

That may be but if you don't spell it out, you enable people to make their own assumptions. This is a public forum after all.

Not entirely sure why some are getting so upset about the pic.
If it was a EOL set that had just disappeared I could understand the animosity, but a set that has not been out that long and is readily available for anyone with the funds to buy it seems a bit odd.
Personally I couldn't give a monkey's either way, if I had the available funds for 14 GBHQ I still wouldn't be buying 14 of them, and @Paperballpark , yes all that Lego in one place does look nice, and I hope all 14 people enjoy building them.

I have a feeling that it was a set that, at least in some places, instantly sold out - and so wasn't "readily available". If you walk into a shop a few days after a launch to be told there's none left, I imagine the first reaction is to panic that you're not going to be able to find one.
  • bandit778bandit778 Member Posts: 2,370
^ I get where your coming from, but even though TLG have been known to EOL things at odd times, after 2 -3 months would be a bit drastic for a new set, even for them, so not sure why there would be quite that level of panic.
I must admit to not being one of those people that have to have things on the day of release, as I have to spread the load a bit between my hobby and other aspects of life, and truth be told, I don't really understand those that do. I am just happy to be able to enjoy my hobby as and when I can.

As you say, TLG occasionally do things that are unexpected. Even when we know what they're doing, what actually happens may be unexpected. We knew that #41999 was a limited edition, but I think a lot of people didn't expect the stock to disappear quite so rapidly. Those that did and bought sets to sell then found they weren't as popular as expected and the price dropped - which almost sounds a contradiction.  Ideas sets were originally relatively limited, so when the Exo-Suit sold out quickly, it looked serious.

The Firehouse isn't an Ideas set but some people think of it a bit like that. Is it going to be available for just a few months or a couple of years? No, that's not a question that's looking for an answer, it's just that nobody really knows, and the uncertainty gives rise to panic when the "wrong" thing happens - like the shelves being bare.

I must admit to not being one of those people that have to have things on the day of release
Neither am I, and I've never missed anything through not acting promptly. However, there almost seems to be a cottage industry around double-guessing when sets are going to be retired - this set is in a new design of box and is therefore going to be around longer than that set which is newer but only has an old box.

I've been monitoring it on Amazon since it came out. I think the largest discount I've noticed so far has been $0.04. That's right; four cents.
