edited January 2016 in Buying & Selling Topics
The USA March Calendar is out.
with this are the dates for the upcoming Double VIP Points that Lego do every year just before Easter.
after looking over the past 3 years of VIP Double Points.
it looks like all the Lego shops do Double VIP at the same time.
so this should be the dates world wide.
the dates are as follows.

7 March 2016 until 22 March 2016.

i am looking forward to this Event.
at this time i plan on getting the Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ with Double Points.

what are your plans or this Years Double points?

Likely buying the Mod bank.. Still debating about the GB HQ, but there is another double points in the fall typically anyway.

Not for bricks and pieces, and not sure of PaB (as most purchases I make are made via the parts dept now). However, the CS did ask something interesting, if I wanted to use VIP points to pay for my parts order. That is a new one for me, not sure when they started that.

i have a order coming up in the next days will let you know if PaB counts or not.

Double points appears to overlap a nice little Ninjago dragon poly promo as well.

I'm planning on getting two more copies of the Doctor Who set to help MOC a couple of other TARDIS consoles (plus have some extra Daleks and Weeping Angels), but I would also like to get the Brick Bank, assuming I have enough money (which I probably won't) and also some of the new Star Wars sets. I may have to save up a lot of money and prioritize.

@madforLEGO s@h pab qualifies for VIP points. As you say, BaP doesn't. However, on double VIP points promos you do get single VIP points on BaP orders!

Oooooo it's during my birthday! Doubt I'll save up enough by then though. I'll try for the next double VIP points instead

I'll be getting Palace Cinema for sure. Maybe Doctor Who, Shuttle Tyderium and the Aluminum Falcon. Not really interested in a Ninjago polybag freebie though. I'd prefer the Easter Chick as the freebie.

I've decided I'm definitely getting the Palace Cinema. By a delightful coincidence, I just cancelled a magazine subscription for the same amount, so I can roll this into "money I normally spend at this time of year anyway".

Of course, the real difficulty will be saving it unopened for a special occasion a few months down the road...

like the new profile pic. If you had that at the beginning it would have made the whole cat wrangler name conversation easier.  I really want your cat to be called humanwrangler, but it probably isn't.
Anyway - are you 100% we are getting one for the same dates in the UK then? I have only heard conjecture so far.

You've been able to pay for bricks and pieces orders using VIP points for over a year now. I paid for one that way last January (2015).

PAB purchases do count towards VIP points.

however all sings point to yes on vip as the old VIP bonus on the 2 set's ends on monday. so it a wait and see.

I would LOVE to do this,
but travel to a Lego store is not a option for me.
    no car,
no one who i can Nag to drive me to a Lego Store.
travel by Buss or Train. is a bad idea as i am planning quite a Big shop.
not as big as it was going to be, but still Big.

just hope that the set's i have planned to buy around the 18th are still in stock on the webpage by that time.

Double points in the UK isn't a particularly big deal, so there's no real reason why anything should be out of stock unless it is being EOLed.

Why isn't it a very big deal - does the UK get double points offers more often than other countries?
  • flordflord Member Posts: 797
Oh man. My credit card doesn't like me this morning. This is going to sting for awhile.

This is a big deal for me in Canada, because the modulars and higher ticket items never go on sale.

It is not that big a deal since double points is at best just over 9% off. We regularly have much better discounts than that, unless you are after exclusives.

However, for this one it is double VIP plus the Bunny Guy box on a £15 spend, plus the Olaf poly if you buy a Princess set. So it wouldn't surprise me if they have a run on the cheaper Princess sets, although at RRP they are awful value for a molded animal and a few parts.

Toys r us also have Palace Cinema,
Could be worth it, with the right offer - I'd be looking for something to trump the value of the S@H double points. I only just signed up to their loyalty card scheme, so I'm unfamiliar with how frequent the offers are.

long ago i did work for TRU,
but that was a long time ago. so i no longer have any ideas on that.
my self i don't think i can wait for that. after all TRU may go OOS on it before a good offer comes along.
did get £20 off a pet shop set from Smyths in the new year sales.
but i view this type of set as set's that i will happy pay full price for. the 2X VIP is just  a bonus.
other set's that are sold but lot's of shops i will wait for. i have had from 15% to 50% saving on set's i got in the past 2 months.
there is almost a art form in getting lego set for a good price,
you need to be on the ball. every day of the week. you never know when you get that killer deal. i try to keep money in the bank for killer deals. but for the next months. it just not going to be there in my account to spend. oh well i going to have lot of Mocs to build.

As @CCC pointed out, it isn't a particularly large discount. Most things are available in the UK, sooner or later, with at least 20% off, and often 30%. That's excluding those limited deals that are only available if you are both quick and lucky, and those where you have to have a suitable store within reasonable distance.

So double points will suit some people, either because of the timing or because of their personal circumstances or because of the freebies, but for many people it's a non-event. That means that stock levels don't tend to plummet to zero ten minutes after the offer starts, or even three weeks later.
    CCC said:

Unless you're talking about the small sets, most exclusives don't stay that way any more. I think, currently, only the Firehouse and Batcave are actually listed as "exclusive". I wandered into a TRU (not something I do very often, admittedly) this morning and was frankly surprised at what they had - several different modulars, Tower Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Ferris Wheel, both Simpson's sets, Helicarrier (on offer as it happens). A few years ago, you wouldn't have found any of them on the High Street, and certainly not together, and yes, you'll have to wait for some of the latest sets to be available. Smyths usually have modulars, with some stores still claiming to have stocks of the Tumbler.

Some starting points to consider. For the last few years, Smyths have had 20% off everything pre-Christmas, and Argos have done 3 for 2. It's also worth looking around this site a bit more thoroughly, including the Members Only section. It's also worth looking in the Amazon price comparator here to see what other European Amazons are doing, seeing as they are often effectively price-matching somebody else in their local territories.

The emphasis on the UK is simply that, in other parts of the world, reductions can be more limited, so a double points offer is a better deal.

TigerMoth list all very good points.
if you remove the walk in to a shop part of that then it become harder to find some set's
TRU list the 2 most oldest modulars. (modulars are what i am working on at this time.)
so for me as i have said i happy with the modulars. at shop@home prices.
i may end up picking more up later. who knows. with my modulars i will be building more up then sideways.
for me i think my motto when it come to modulars will be, if you going to buy 1. better buy 2 more of that modular.

  • TigerMothTigerMoth Member Posts: 2,343

if you remove the walk in to a shop part of that then it become harder to find some set's
Many people would give their eye teeth to be within 30 or 40 miles of all the major UK players, including a brand store, as you are and would find a way to circumvent any difficulties presented.
TRU list the 2 most oldest modulars. (modulars are what i am working on at this time.)
Don't believe all that you read online! I think I saw Pet Shop, Palace Cinema, Parisian Restaurant and Detective's Office this morning. There were certainly three, if not all four.

In any case, history suggests that all will eventually be available there - and in Smyths with a 20% discount before Christmas.
  • catwranglercatwrangler Member Posts: 1,895
Some very useful perspectives here - thanks, guys. I think the major limiting factor for me is location. NI lacks a couple of the major chains that are often mentioned in the Shopping UK forum, and personal circumstances make it difficult to get to the big warehouse-sized stores with the most choice regarding things like modulars - my city centre branch of TRU is just an ordinary unit in a shopping centre, so the Lego section is good, but not huge.

I'm always surprised that Argos and Tesco stock Architecture, but not the modulars or the larger, more adult-oriented Creator sets; otherwise they'd have all of my Lego custom, given that one has regular 10% voucher offers on £50 and £100 spends, and the other has Tesco Direct and Clubcard Boost.

I think on balance I'll be happiest getting the Palace Cinema from S@H now - it's very true that I could wait for a good TRU offer to come along, but find it out of stock on their website...

Did LEGO start charging shipping? l thought it was free. l was about to buy the Ewok Village and they want to charge an extra $17 to ship it.

You're probably right. You also have Smyths and their likely Christmas deal, but there's also a slight risk that it may disappear before then. But something more recent...
