5 Star Wars 9 city and 2 friends advent calendars.  They finally went to 50% off of their already low 14.57 here.  So I got them all for 7.27 each!  I normally don't buy Star Wars but it's tough to resist when they are already worth 5x that amount.

My birthday later in the week and the wife is asking what I'd like, thinking I might go for the Big Bang Theory set. It's not something I'd normally go for but looks fun.  We'll go into town to have a look on Saturday.

Just sell one, bit of cash and you'll be good to go after (provided you don't drink or take regular exercise or anything, probably fine for building Lego though)

Wasn't there some guy who sold a kidney a few years back to get an Ipad2 or something like that? Might have been a hoax story but I recall reading an interview someone did with him six months or so after and he was always sick and in the hospital and deeply regretted his folly.

^indeed.. and when they caught the people that did it he was awarded $200,000+ in compensation for nearly having complete organ failure and a pretty poor life ahead of him.
Still, that's plenty of money to buy the required sets...

Fabuland was a preschool theme from the 80s focused on a town full of anthropomorphized animal characters (kind of like Richard Scarry's Busytown, if you're familiar with that series). Like Jack Stone, 4+, and Juniors, Fabuland was aimed at builders who had just "graduated" from Duplo but might not be ready for regular LEGO playthemes, so it used a combination of basic LEGO bricks and larger, more specialized bricks and panels. Fabuland figures were bigger than minifigures but smaller than Duplo figures.

Fabuland was fairly successful in Europe but never really caught on in North America. On some levels it was ahead of its time from a media standpoint, with a character-driven story told through picture books and animated adventures on videocassette. A lot of AFOLs seem oddly fond of Fabuland compared to other themes aimed at the same age range, possibly due to its cutesy cartoon aesthetic.
  • YodaliciousYodalicious Member Posts: 1,366

^ I'm "oddly fond" of it entirely due to my age. I'm 36 and was at just the right age to enjoy it when it came out. But, like I said, I only ever got 2 sets and I won't be buying more. But I do like to reminisce about it from time to time.

I picked up some ant-mans and pirate sets since they are now gone. Other than that, I've been pretty good this month as I've put off the brick bank and GBH until a decent freeby arises and so far the Nexo theme hasn't tickled my fancy in the slightest.

My main focus for Lego sets are the ones that sell for $19.99 or less. So, with it said, the ones I researched on the Wal-Mart site are the ones to buy. The sets I'll buy are:

    #60115 (4x4 Off-Roader)
    #60116 (Ambulance Plane)
#60128 (Police Pursuit) (listed on Lego site $24.99, but whatever)
    #70313 (Moltor's Lava Smasher)
    #70312 (Lance's Mecha Horse)

I picked up #8863 yesterday for $30 at a thrift store, complete in the box, all bags sealed. Also picked up a lot of Bionicle parts, but it seems most of the little pegs are missing, so I'll have to order a bunch of them so I can start assembling...

    From the last few weeks:

#60091 Deep Sea Starter - New bath toy for the kids -added just to qualify for free shipping
#76034 Batboat Harbor - Too bad this one doesn't float. Truth is I mostly bought it for Deathstroke who I have loved since I first read Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans. I wanted to make sure I got it before it was suddenly retired.
#60083 Snowplow - I live in a northern climate. You usually don't see these made. I would also kill for a Lego zamboni.
#60073 Service Truck - My kids loved the idea of a guy stuck in a port-o-potty
#60076 - Demolition Site - Love the big crane
#60072 - Demolition starter - It comes with a toilet. Did I mention I have 3 small boys?
#21108 - Ecto-1 - Found one of the few left at retail. They are gone everywhere now, which doesn't make sense. Lego has just released the GBHQ so shouldn't they keep the Ecto-1 around for people who now want it to park in the HQ? I just don't get Lego the company sometimes.
  • chrisalddinchrisalddin Member Posts: 3,041
    @flord
    Ecto-1 is a Ideas set.
as far as i can tell all Ideas set's are limited in the number that are made.
this is just my view in this but to me lego seem to View all ideas set's as way's to keep AFOL happy. i could not start to guess why set numbers made are limited.
i can say that in the new catalog all 3 ideas sets are marked up as limited.
This is why as soon as the new stock of Wall-e turns up on Shop@home and i have the cash, i am getting one. it is also why as soon as i found out about the Ghostbuster Firehouse HQ, back in November, Ecto-1 was the 1st set i got. there was no oh i wait for the HQ, it was i know this well not be around long lets get it Now.

I guess it depends on the type of consumer we're talking about. Some of my friends saw the GBHQ, liked it, and thought about getting it. They would have no idea that they are no longer able to buy the Ecto-1 at retail. To me, this turns off the casual fan, and that means Lego misses a sale. If this is true, I don't understand why an Ideas set needs to limited. If it sells, sell it. Why turn down $$$?
  • VorpalRyuVorpalRyu Member Posts: 2,318
The reality is, TLG can only produce so many sets at any one time, so they can't keep every set they produce in production indefinitely, otherwise we would eventually get to a point of having no new sets released. Someone in TLG would be in charge of making the calls on what sets are removed from production so new sets can enter production, they wouldn't be just doing so on a whim, they'd be looking as sales history, projected future sales, etc. So if TLG are doing away with the Ecto-1 even though the GBHQ has just been released, there must be some pretty compelling reasons to do so.

The number of Ideas sets made per batch is limited, not the total number. Mainly because Ideas sets are riskier than the LEGO Group's typical themes. So LEGO starts by producing 10,000 to 20,000 sets to "test the waters" and see whether demand is really all it's cracked up to be. Depending on how those sets sell, they then decide whether to go back and produce more.

If the LEGO Group has really stopped making Ecto-1 sets for good, then that probably means demand for it has started to peter out. But to me it seems more likely that the demand ramped up in response to the Firehouse Headquarters set, and thus the LEGO Group ran through their existing supply faster than they could make more. Presently, the GB site reads "Out of stock, expected ship date 29 Jan 2016", which suggests they WILL be getting more in, and the US site still says "Available Now".
