[US] TRU $10 off $50 Jan 8-14

Not an awesome deal, but for those trying to figure out when to spend their rewards dollars, you have a $10 off $50+ purchases on LEGO "construction sets", excluding Friends, starting on Sunday. Now since it says "construction sets" this may exclude CMFs as well. The other deal going on is Ramses Return and Ramses Pyramid at 50% off. I'm guessing this is 50% off the original price and not the adjusted one from LEGO.

    I have been wondering how to spend my points and I may just have to wait for Sunday because I also have a 10 dollar LEGO coupon from TRUs last rewards statement to be used in Jan as well..

    So it means, the guy who is handling my TRU purchases must be having lots of rewards dollars! Lemme at him!

    How do you guys manage the reward dollars? Do you get to make a username/membership and all the reward dollars get piled up in your account in TRU? Or are these offered every few months???

    TRU rewards aren't very lucrative
    Other than at Christmas time, it is about 3% cash back.

    Occasionally, they run promotions (10% back around Christmas, extra LEGO bucks during "Bricktober," etc.)

    The other thing is they issue certificates with limited valid dates. Unlike the LEGO VIP program, there are limits to how much you can earn and TRU makes it difficult to use the certs for anything "big" because if you earn $40, they split it up into multiple coupons that are valid different dates and can't all be stacked.

    ^ yes, but only one rewards coupon per transaction I believe (I haven't tried it recently).

    ^^--Unless it says only valid 'in store', which I believe the 10% 'bonus' says on the coupons.

    @coolsplash: Usually the TRU 'rewards' earned are split up half for the 1st half of the month, 2nd for second half of the month..
    So if you earn 20 dollars, you will be able to spend 10 of it from Jan1-14th, and 10 Jan 15th-31st

    Unfortunately yes, BUT if you also happen to have TRU Rewards and a 10 dollar off LEGO coupon that cam with the rewards received last month, it is not so bad.

    It is getting sad though that TRU has been so outrageous with pricing now that you cannot even buy a small LEGO set without paying another 10-40% on the set. (no kidding the Car and Caravan are 20 bucks at LEGO and 28 bucks at TRU)


    Again I'm guessing once the 'rewards' coupons expire, everything will mysteriously drop down to retail, or close to it.
    IMO that is pretty unethical if that is the case. To offer a 10% back 'reward' only to raise your retail prices to counteract the rewards offered.
    Yes, yes I know there are sets that are retail still, but very few. many only available online and not in the stores as well.

    I was hoping this $10 off would be good on Friends. I'd buy 3x Olivia's Tree House, which is $17.99 instead of $19.99.

    It is annoying that TRU did this, as they are ripping off people.
    Now for those in the 'know', they know to look for a good deal, or stack coupons, and what not.

    But for every day people they, most likely, do not know. They take their kids into a TRU store, buy an item that they could probably get somewhere else for 10-40% cheaper but do not realize it... It just bugs me.

    Annoying, but be sure to check your stores. I saw the prices went up online, but the treehouse is still $17.99 in my local store.

    I agree. I figure the people paying above retail subsidize the coupons and 10% rewards for those of us who can take advantage of them to get good prices.

    WOW! I didn't realize that half of my rewards aren't good until after the 14th. Thanks for the heads up on that.

    The way I look at it is this: I will feel much less guilty returning 2 Star Wars Advent Calendars today at TRU, stock I know they can't move.

    It is annoying, but then again, we all seem to leverage TRU for the deals that do work.

    Also, you may all want to pay attention to your rewards. I earned $31 worth, but only received coupons for $24.

    I looked online, and it is only giving me rewards through 12/12/2012, despite my account showing a few purchases between 12/13 and 12/24.

    I e-mailed TRU, and they "sent my issue to a specialist" to look into it.

    @BTHodgeman Thanks for the heads up, but it's not worth my time to try to track this kind of thing with them. I just assume they are pulling one over on me, and get what I can with the coupons they provide. Resigned to my fate with TRU. :)

    ...it can be worth your while to "keep on them." Same thing happened to me last year and by the time they issued the rewards to me, they were already expired. In the end, they gave me a $50 gift card to make up or the $15 in missed rewards.

    Wondering if anyone had similar experience: Both my wife and I have rewards dollars in our respective accounts valid through the 13th. May I use the dollars from both accounts in one transaction? Or do I have to do two transactions, each with dollars from only one account? Thanks.

    @Dato - It will depend on the cashier. I think for the certificate to scan, they need to have the card the reward is issued to pulled up on the computer, but they can easily override it.

    ^^ Unless you have a personal reason why you want to separate accounts, I would suggest that you and your wife combine your spending into one account. TRU rewards (during normal periods) do not give you a % of your spending back. You earn $5 back for every $150 spent. So for example, if you and your wife both spend $100 in each of your accounts, neither of you would receive any reward dollars, but if you combined your spending into one account, you would accrue a $5 certificate.

    During Christmas-time, there is a $50 Rewards limit. That would be the most common reason to have separate accounts :)

    Anyone try their rewards on Pre-Order items like the Star Wars stuff? I wonder if they'll be permitted in the $10 off $50 as well, starting tomorrow. TIE Fighter is $59.99.

    @sidersdd I was going to do the same thing but then you still have to pay shipping. Also they are jacking up the price even on the preorders of SW. The Droid Escape is $21.99 even though the MSRP is $19.99. I think it is best to wait until they hit the stores. The next round of r u dollars should how up after the 15th of this month.

    Only thing I see worthwhile is MMV. With $10 off and other promos/rewards and free shipping, not a bad deal.

    Just came back with a MVR, bought using R Us dollars from two different accounts in one transaction successfully. I told the cashier about it before she started scanning, and she said if they went through they went through, she didn't have a problem with trying it out for me.

    There is a $15 off $100 purchase online only code (OCHRISTMASTREE) that expires Jan 15, but it doesn't seem to work in combination with the $10 off $50 for Lego. Or maybe it just doesn't work for lego at all. It might work on Friends though since those are excluded from the $10 off $50 promo.

    Lol, that would explain why it's not working! I got it from a link that usually updates when there is a new coupon, so when it updated (there was a valid one last week that expires yesterday) I just checked that it was January and assumed it worked.

    ^Yes, in a way...she gave me a new code but it was many alpha-numeric characters and was only good once and for me. But you should definitely call. I had my cart ready to go with the $10 off and all other info and then just input the code as she read it to me. This way you are still on phone with them if something goes awry.

    My local TRU (Lake Grove, NY) had a Diagon Alley on the shelf with no markup for $149.99.

    Used all my rewards from 2 accounts with no problem. It was 5 x $5 rewards + $10 Lego bucks on each account so after all that (with the $10 off $50 promo) it came to $69.99 + tax. Pretty happy, but if not for the 10217 there was nothing else worthwhile that wasn't marked up a ridiculous amount.

    Found a Woody's Roundup at TRU in N. San Diego for $55, but with the $10 off of $50, brought it under RRP by $5. Last chance before EOL, so I was a happy camper.

    I used 3 $5 rewards in one transaction today, no problem. Got a Hillside House for $55 plus tax ($79.99-$10 (so back to RRP, grr)-$15 rewards). Not terrible, but not thrilled either. It was something I wanted, but I was hoping for something cheaper (or maybe an MMV or MVR, but those were unlikely) since I have other bigger purchases planned too, and this was further down on my priority list. This store seriously had less than half of one side of an aisle with Lego. Smallest Lego section I've ever seen in a TRU (mid-town San Diego).

    One of mine has the 7636 Harvester x2 at 10 dollars over original retail. $10 off, burn up my vouchers, and another harvester to work my Lego fields :)
