Also, get the ones you looked at that made you say 'awesome!' That is the best way to pick out Lego.
I will also say buy most stuff only when it is on sale as many sets seem to be overpriced now. Watch sites like Amazon (Amazon itself selling, do not buy new sets from 3rd party dealers on Amazon-the listing will say 'sold by Amazon'), as many city and creator sets go on sale. Also be wary of those selling currently produced sets on eBay for dirt cheap as that may be signs of drop shipping with stolen credit card info.
The other thing I will add is to get a LEGO VIP account at shop.lego.com. This entitles you to points back and also when they have double points giveaways.
i got all 6 sets for less than £200 so I'm really happy with that and should keep me going for a while :)
