2016 Speed Champions who else is excited about these!!!!

crazycarlcrazycarl USAMember Posts: 392
All the sets look really cool.  Only one I'll prob skip is the ford raptor set.  Like the new prototype class they are making!  Kinda like my MOCs a little better but I will still buy 1 or more of each set!!!  Post some pics if some have not seen them.  Also post my MOCs.

^ I'm right there with you on the Speed Champions sets, this line is great. I agree, the Raptor and hot rod set is the weakest of the bunch, but my inner completist will probably force me to buy it.

The Porsche 919/917 set is a day one purchase for me. It's just too bad they didn't do the Gulf blue / orange scheme for the 917. I looked in to building one using Medium Azure before, but there wasn't the right mix of parts at the time. With the new Elves and Friends sets, it might be time to check again.

These look great, and I actually think the Raptor/hot rod set might be my favourite.

" It's just too bad they didn't do the Gulf blue / orange scheme for the 917."   That was what I was really expecting until I saw the pics this morning.  Given Lego's long history with Shell the red machine makes sense to me.  I really wish it would have been in its own set too with another LMP1 in the pit set.  Oh well like you said I will prob end up getting all of the sets.  Two of that and the Audi sets though to build my large FIA WEC diorama.

You know with the hotrod set, the Camero drag set, and a few straight street baseplates one could make a nice dragstrip scene.  Yep I'm getting them all!

Was kind of excited for the American cars but after seeing the pictures I'm not sure if i'll get any. I know there's only so much one can do with LEGO, but they just look off to me. Kind of glad there's no Mopar in this wave. Will have to see in person before I make my final decision. Only thing I want right now is the instructions to the hot rod so I can build my own version to go with the  6561 hot rod club, and 10200 custom car garage.

The Raptor and hot rod is definitely my favourite. The mechanic in me loves to see any sort of shop-based set.

Not or a fan of the Mustang at all. The headlights on the side, and overall very plain looking.

I agree with that and already know how I am going to mod the front end.  I'll replace the slopes w/stickers out for clear and blue cheese wedge elements.  I did kinda the same thing on #75910.  Ill also mod the trunk lid (boot) cause its not rounded on the edges.

This 2nd wave of cars doesn't look as nice as how the 1st wave ended up. The Audi R8 looks nothing in shape like the real deal. And for the duo set, what does that trailer (?) or garage thing look like when it's closed?

Agree, really glad to see this line continue. Really like the Raptor/Hot Rod set. Glad to see them trying new varieties of cars. I will probably end up with all of these.

Also this. It has the black middle section, and that's it. The front sticker is really... optimistic. It doesn't help all that well in making the car look right.

But as I did with the previous line of cars, instead of applying stickers I swap in some bricks as headlights. Makes the cars more generic looking, but that just better fits in my Lego city.

Yeah I agree, making the Shell variant makes sense given their relationship with LEGO. While the Gulf colors are more iconic, it probably would have required another license agreement. Colors aside, I'm just happy this theme got a 2nd wave.

I don't think its meant to close.  Its the front and back of a pit lane and a spotters stand.  The back side of the pic shows the side facing the track with the refueling line.

It definitely closes, as you can see by the hinges near the garage entrance, and by the shape of the floor (designed to line up nicely when closed). But the most of the walls are large panel pieces, so I imagine the outside is very plain. Likely just closes up to look like a pit stall/easy storage.

I would say that if the first wave was more european oriented this one is definetely more american. Love the big Porsche set and yes, instead of the 919 they could have made a second 917 with the original azure-orange scheme maybe adapting the whole set to a full '70 Le Mans galore. At least this could be a nice idea for a future flagship set of 2000+ pieces, which I think this theme would fully deserve. Being it mainly focused on american racing, I would have liked to see also a couple of nascar cars, but okay maybe I'm asking too much. Hope Lego will update soon Lego Digital Designer with all the last pieces from this line, cause they can inspire infinite number of new cars mocs.

I'm torn with this line.  Both first and second waves only look OK to me and the fact that they rely on so many stickers to make them resemble the actual cars is a pretty big turnoff for me.  I've been hoping on good sales for these before I start jumping in.

It is hinged!  That may be even better for me so I can buy a few and make a pit lane with them side by side closed!  Really hope that set is around $49.

It would be nice if the Audi E-tron set comes with 1, 2, and 3 stickers as they race 3 of these in FIA WEC.  Otherwise I will need to find a way to make 2, and 3 stickers.  Same with the Porsche 919.  They should make a 14, 18, and 20 sticker as they race 4 of this car in the LMP1 class at Le Mans.  Given my MOCs are stickerless I can make them my LMP2 and Daytona prototype (IMSA Tudor USCC) classes.

Hi Crazycarl, if you are interested like me in custom Lego stickers to customize speed champions look alike mocs, I can inform you that I've just finished a complete series of all F1 2015 cars (I've already posted some pics on this forum and soon I may put them on sales) and that next thing I would like to work on are sports cars like WEC and all the most iconic racing sport cars. At this purpose I hope Lego will release soon an update for LDD with all the new moulded pieces.

This is one of those themes that yeah I'd enjoy and wouldn't mind displaying; but ultimately can't legitimize spending the $$$ on and expanding my LEGO collection to yet ANOTHER theme.  But to those that do, enjoy!

I was unimpressed with the Porsche 918 speed champion. It's the slowest car I own and a boring build. For $15 I wasnt expecting a lot but for a car thats called a speed champion you'd think it would roll on a wood floor.
Overall I enjoying having a Porsche in my LEGO cars. I would buy it again, only because it's a Porsche.
Anyone else have a different experience with these?

^Perhaps it will be exclusive to a particular store? I think those tend not to be in the retailer catalogs where the leaks come from. Hopefully that will mean this line will get added to stores other than TRU in the US.

Unfortunately all of the Speed Champions set don't roll well. I think there's just to much friction on the technic pins holding the wheels on. LEGO really needed to use an axle to connect each side. Even the Mystery Machine rolls better. That said, I was just happy to see LEGO get the Porsche license.

^^^^ Agree with all of that.  I However dont really play with them so i prefer them not to roll.  I only use them to display on a MOC racetrack.  I think my next undertaking will be to MOC the Le Mans pit row and starting line.  Going to need alot more road baseplates though!!!

Got my first one of wave 2.  Had to make some changes to make it look closer to the real prototype.  Changed the front splitter, the engine intake above the cockpit, and changed the rear wing.

I was unimpressed by the rolling ability as well.  I thought Lego would have done a better job considering kids would want to race them by pushing them.  Any ideas if alternate pins would work any better?  Any suggestions for a fix?

I've got a few of these now, and my opinion of them is influenced largely by my car interests. I like most Lamborghinis, a few Ferraris, the Porsche 911, and a few other specific cars. I like motorsports, but I'm not too fussed about them (certainly not F1). With all that being said:

    From the first wave:

    75899: LaFerrari & 75908: 458 Italia GT2 - not the Ferraris I'm interested in. I want a Testarossa, F40 or 488.

75910: Porsche 918 Spyder - I don't like convertibles and there's too many studs at the back.

75912: Porsche 911 GT Finish Line - I like this, not built it yet. Would've preferred a road car to a race car, but beggars can't be choosers. Also, I don't need two of them. Or the 'finish line' - but my children will enjoy playing with that.

75870: Chevrolet Corvette Z06 - I like corvettes, but the shape of this is just a little 'off'.

75871: Ford Mustang GT - I used to work for Ford, and really like this Mustang. The mod done by crazycarl looks even better though!

75873: Audi R8 LMS ultra - again, would've preferred the road car, but this will do. built it without stickers and it really didn't look right. with the stickers it's a lot better.

Anything else is either too much 'motorsports', or not a make/model I really like.

What I would love to see in the future is some Lamborghinis - if the licence is available.

Right now I only have this:

"75870: Chevrolet Corvette Z06 - I like corvettes, but the shape of this is just a little 'off' ".   I have to agree.  Its because it is too tall and narrow for its height.  But its Lego and not a plastic or die cast model.  Theres only so much they can do.  I also think the R18 sits way too high.  Prototypes are always smaller than GT class cars, but again, its Lego.

I personally can't wait to get my hands on the Audi R18.

I may also get the Porsche 919 and 917 set.

I only have one set from the first wave that I really need to get around to building, and that's the Ferrari 458.

I wish there weren't so many stickers because I'm terrible at applying them, but I also understand it would cost a lot to do this much printing.

I hear ya....I have 8214 and am not that in love with it.  8169 is MUCH much better.

Maybe next wave they'll get the license back?  It would be nice to get a diverse collection, and some Japanese cars would be nice.  Mazda RX-7, Nissan GT-R, Toyota MR2.

I cannot agree more with these 2 statements. I have both Lambos and #8169 is the better one with the functional top folding into the trunk. A beautiful mechanism that has not been replicated since.

And 90's Import Racers go straight to my heart, with the beloved MR2 Turbo on top of the list. I had 2 of those back in the days, a lightly modified 91' Turbo in red and heavily modified >400hp 93' Turbo in silver. I would kill to have one released by Lego.

Another notable one that would look stellar in brick form is the legendary NSX. Plus some 911 Porsches of any era would be nice.
