Shell Sets

LeeLee Member Posts: 138
Is it quite rare to find the Shell petrol station sets? I found this photo online of the one I am talking about. Its just I know a petrol station that has 2 of these, one like the photo and another one that's different that I cant quite see. Thinking of offering to buy them. Thanks

I think that the sets themselves are not super rare - the were promotions sold at she'll stations in Europe (one series in 2012 and another series in 2014).  What makes the items in your pic a bit more rare are the retail displays - I don't remember seeing them crop up very often (but I have seen them before).

See set 30190 - 30196 for the seven 2012 sets and set 40190 - 40196 for the seven 2014 sets. I have all 14 for sale, but I do not have the retail displays to go along with them.

Yeah, would be sweet if I could get them both. Ive been told to talk with the owner of the petrol station but I've not yet had the chance. The two people I did asked said no to my offer but they were just employees I believe. Next time I go I'll be sure to take some cash with me and have a lovely chat with the owner!

I think that these promotional sets might become quite desirable given that they were the last ones before Lego and Shell split up their partnership. Like Todd says - they're not rare, but definitely nowhere near as common as the polybags given away with newspapers.

I had a chance to acquire one of those, the manager was being difficult though. The same Shell had a whole box of PBs left, he was also being cagey about selling them even though promo has been over for aaaaaages.
When I went back, he told me he sold them all to one person. LIES!

I'm thinking that I'm going to have the same problem.

How do you know? Someone may have come in and made him a good offer. Cash often talks. There is a big difference between "Are you willing to sell them?" and "I'll give you £200 for the lot".

It's was the cagey behaviour to start with and, I did offer him money, he was playing a game though. He knew about a certain internet auction site and I'm sure that's where it all ended up.
There was the may the 4th TRU promo over here and you could build and keep a micro scale Wookie Gunship. I told a friend to go and check his TRU, he told me that the manager said there was no event nor any BaK event. I think some store staff make a killing when their business has free or very cheap bricks @ their fingertips.

I would agree 100% on that! People get all funny when there is lego to give away.

Were the 2014 Shell sets the last of the line?  I read that LEGO and Shell will not be continuing with their promotional sets... but that was after the current long term agreement ends.  They were vague about that in the articles I read.

Also, I don't see these last Shell sets becoming suddenly highly sought after, unless LEGO investors/resellers start cornering the market.  Unlike some of the more desireable licensed LEGO products, I don't see Shell as following suit.

That display stand however is a very nice item.   Like all LEGO promotion display items, I'm sure it would fetch a pretty penny.

TLG and Shell have a relationship since the mid 1950s.   Among the earliest Shell branded LEGO items, was this large wooden gas pump....

    ... and these 1:43 scale Shell Chevrolet Tanker Trucks... ( #908 and #918 )...

The first regular Shell set was the 1966 introduced 325 Shell Station Set of continental Europe, Britain/Ireland and Australia (not USA/Canada).

This 325 set came in 3 box variations... two for continental Europe and one for Britain/Ireland/Australia (bottom)...

Thanks. I've got one of those little yellow pumps someplace.

Is it possible that Shel supplies or, is connected to the supplier of TLGs plastic?
If TLG is changing supplier, their Shell partnership will end as a result.

Yeah, they could be? They have been doing business with one another for many years.

Here are the world's leading producers of ABS plastic....

    http://www.linncn.com/en/news_info.asp?id=421

Shell is not on the list.   And I doubt that being a 3rd party supplier to any of these Chemical giants would negate an agreement to supply TLG with raw ABS.

Some of these Chemical giants are so large, they probably get the source petroleum for their ABS production from multiple sources... one of which could be Royal Dutch Shell.
