Found in the coming US-Store Calendar .. see details

It looks really nice and I would prefer a bigger version of it, but anyway it's a must-have for my collection!

Cheers, Michael

That's beautiful. I wonder if the 2nd Xmas set will be a station or something unrelated?

It's rumoured to be a Gingerbread House I think.

I don't really like it but its much bigger than I thought for a giveaway. I am sad that this does seem to be the end of the line for the nice little Christmas scenes.

Wow, first PaB boxes were gone last year, now it appears no special holiday set? If this really turns out to be the case I guess LEGO really does not want my cash after all.

Cute set, but not only is the holiday freebie set not starting on Brick Friday this year, but also not overlapping either.  Last year we had 2x VIP points that stacked with the first holiday set.

I also see this isn't overlapping with the Oct 1-4 2x VIP points either.

    Boo.

Nothing is cohesive with anything anymore at TLG.  Each year it seems more and more gets taken away.  I guess it would make sense that their profits continue to rise year after year.

I think this actually looks kinda nice. I would've liked them to continue with one of those holiday scenes sets, though.

It's a freebie.  And a fairly recycled looking set that anyone collecting Lego probably has the spare parts for.

Nice!  Too bad it doesn't overlap with double points, but I'm just happy to know that Double Points is coming up. I think I'll pick up everything I've been holding out for at that point. Ferris Wheel, Millennium Falcon, Toy Shop... Should be a solid October!

That is a great set :) I have the original Holiday train and for a freebie that is actually really nice :) I really hope Lego have a lot in storage as that will be snapped up very quickly. Just as msanders says 'what to buy' ;)

No minifigure? Or 2x VIP points? Quite disappointing but I will still probably get it when I buy the Winter Village Toy Shop.

^100% agree.  My only disappointment was that I thought the Holiday Train (ala #10173) was being resurrected after I read the thread title.

No news on an Autumn release Lego SW UCS set yet? I usually buy one around Oct to get the freebie.

    Boy, that is a beauty!

I'm "meh" on the Lego offering. Probably because I've been following the hobby for so long that it isn't anything new or special. It's not that much different then #40034 (Christmas train poly),  or even #31015  (Emerald Express).

I will not have any problem selling this to someone for $20.00 to bring down the cost of sets that I would like to get.

I am trying to figure out what that upside-down stocking/boot is sticking out of the back of the tender.

This set is free? I dunno. To me, it is not. It is gotten unless you pay 99.99 USD for a purchase. 99.99 USD for a very tiny, non-minifig scale set.

I think that is what many could be taking exception with, that and it seems like LEGO is trying to get cheaper with their giveaways around the holidays. For a rather large purchase you do not get a minifig scale holiday bonus set (which also have gone fantastic with the WV sets that are out at the time), but something that appears like it took all of 5 dollars to make. If I want mini scale models, I'd rather see them at Target as a 4.99 USD poly bag. Or LEGO making this a gift to the consumer at a substantially lower rate, like $35 USD or more and you get the set, like they did with the Moon buggy (which you can get now at Target for 3.99 USD by the way).

You're kidding yourself if you think a mini train this size with two cars plus a bit of scenery would cost just $5. Maybe $5 for the engine alone, but this easily seems to me like a $12 to $15 set, even without knowing its piece count. The fact that it's not minifigure scale may be a deal-breaker for you, but it easily has just as much value in bricks as any of the limited edition winter scene sets from the past three years.

I imagine one motivating factor behind not doing a minifigure-scale scene might be so that it would not feel like just yet another of the vignette-style seasonal sets they've been doing all throughout this year. Alternatively, it might just be that they wanted to do a train, and there's no way to do a classy-looking minifigure-scale train in a set this small.

That's what I was thinking as well! Some sort of small track set up next to the market could look pretty cool!

I'm baffled by some of the lukewarm responses on this thread. It's a cute set, it's in keeping with the holiday theme, and it's free.

The lukewarm resoinse... I can explain on my side of things...

In the last yea or two, I have bought the new holiday set, received double points and got the first holiday promo, which goes nicely with my new Holliday set.

This year, I will not receive double points with the purchase of the holiday set. In fact, I already have the holiday set, so I would need to find something else worth $100 to spend to even get this set. Then if I finally get it, set 40034 was just out in the past year or two. I have at least 3 of those that I bought, and already MOCed into a 3 piece kid train for my winter village.

Basically, with all of the above, while, the train is cute, it is a dud for me and not necessary, and I will not be getting it.
    Cue lukewarm response.

I suspect part part of the above is partly why others have had a lukewarm response as well.

Yeah the lukewarm response is from people who have enjoyed the winter village line with the promos of the last 3 years that went alongside the bigger sets.

@tamamahm Completely agree. While I acknowledge its a free set, the previous years free sets have always greatly encouraged me to spend over 100$ to qualify. This years promotions in general do not encourage me in anyway to purchase from LEGO directly. I'll be searching amazon and other retailers for discounted items this year.

Yes, you're right, I was thinking of the second set.  But the first set did enjoy the 2x October points.  Here's hoping that the second set (assuming there is a second set), does overlap with X points factor also.

This sounds a little snippy but, obviously Lego does NOT want to do trains. No new Creator set and a lack-luster Christmas offering.

Maybe the lack of a Winter Village add on sort of us leans toward the argument that Lego intended for the Winter Village theme to end last year with Santa's Workshop and had nothing planned.

^ good point.  But it makes me wonder what TLG really was thinking.  They rerelease a WV set and a lackluster promo all in the same year?  It's like a complete 180 from what it's been.  I wonder specifically how the back office works there and what the decision making process looks like.

Sounds to me that LEGO wanted to see how cheap and lazy they could be and how many people would still buy what they are 'selling'. Starting with no PaB box last season, a rehash of the toy shop this year, and now this removal of the minifig scale holiday bonus sets. It is like LEGO is trying to see how much they can 'phone it in' and still make their money. Heck, I'm starting to actually miss their mediocre calendar 'gift' from last year at this point.

Combine this with the increase prices of sets, and the seeming lack of good set design for the past year (specifically with Castle and Pirates and the price gouging by LEGO on SW and now apparently the bigger City sets) and this is looking bad for LEGO IMO.

It bothers us as collectors but the average consumer wanting a Christmas themed set will like what they see, it's a great set.
With the current volume of sets, I'd guess that something has to be put aside once in a a while and at the moment it's the winter sets.
There is every chance that something new was designed a while back but that they'd have to stretch themselves to get it out there.

I like the little train myself, think it's a cool little set and can appreciate it for what it is. Plus the added bonus of it being free helps!

Hey, I should like this too. Between the Toy shop remake, no promo minifig scale gifts for 99 USD purchase, no PaB boxes, overpriced advent calendars, and finally this silly 99 USD 'gift' I am going to save a ton of money not buying LEGO this season. I'm guessing that is not what LEGO wants to hear though.

Again: There's nothing about this holiday train set that "phones it in". It is more or less the same size as any of the other holiday gift sets from the past three years, and very detailed for a set its size. A lot of people have compared it to #31015 Emerald Express, a $5 set. But it's easily at least three times the size of that set and has much more realistic-looking proportions, without such an exaggeratedly large smokestack or wheels. Not to mention great details like the railings on each side of the smoke box, the decorative columns on the cab and caboose, and the plume of smoke.

There's no doubt it took every bit as much effort and expense to design this set as any of the previous holiday gift sets. The fact that you can't appreciate it just because it's at a different scale than you're used to says more about you than it does about the designers.

When you accuse the designers of "phoning it in" just because they decided to do something new and different instead of catering to picky, minifig-obsessed buyers like you who insist on more of the same, you are insulting those designers and anybody who appreciates creative design. Comments like yours are petty, shameful, and a disgrace to the AFOL community. It's probably for the best if LEGO quits pandering to people like you.

It's interesting to see how different people have reacted to this bonus item.

What I've picked up from this thread is that TLG has made a rod for its own back by offering bonus items since there's always going to be a group out there who will look to compare an item with a preferred one from a previous year rather than look at it for what it is.

    A few things here:
First, sorry, while you are fixated on the train set (where I said that I think it only costs LEGO about 5 dollars to make (not sell for) and I would only pay 4-5 dollars such a miniscale set), I was opining that coupled with the rehash of the toy shop it seems like LEGO was not trying hard. Last I checked- at least in the US- I am entitled to my opinion, or is this not acceptable to you?

Second, While I disagree, sometimes passionately, with those on this forum, I do not believe that I ever said anyone is being a 'disgrace' to the community. That is troll-ish behavior IMO.

Third, As for people 'like me'. You mean those like me who are very passionate about LEGO and want them to do well and spend 100's of dollars on LEGO product every year, for myself, my family, and friends.. you mean those people?

I did not realize you are the Lord of the LEGO forums and everyone must have sunshine coming out of every orifice for everything LEGO does or face your wrath.

I'll make a deal with you, how about you do not assume things about people and I will not assume you are an angry person that is still simmering over other opinions I have made in the past (such as my opinion that the pirate sets were also lacking in creativity and value) and just looks for any excuse to jump on my comments? Deal?

Again, I do not think people are simply reacting to this set itself, but the combination of multiple items that have happened at once for this year, that shows Lego once again diminishing promos, discounts, etc.
I think people are also reacting to the fact that over the last few years the holiday promo sets have been ones that people have seen as essentially to the holiday line, thus these sets were definitely Lego store draws for many.
The train is well done, but it is not as big of a draw for me personally,  For my case, 40034, not the Emerald Express, is too similar for the upcoming set, since I MOCed mine to be an engine and two cars already.

I do not think some being frustrated by these items at all equates to obsessed picky buyers, it has more to do with folks frustrated at lost creative opportunities Lego had for this line and the continued erosion of discounts.

I suspect the reason for the train instead of a set to go with the holiday toy shop is because they are releasing vignettes for all the holidays this year, We have seen the October and November vignettes, but not the Christmas one yet. Because of that, it makes sense for me that they have the train, but I also acknowledge it is not an item that will make me come in and spend money.

It works for me in that I will skip buying anything holiday for me, and I will wait for the Thanksgiving and holiday vignettes. I may do double points, but only because there is one item I want.

^- Yeah, I think Ill be only buying the Thanksgiving set, which is nice looking, and the other Christmas vignette this season. I had some other sets I was on the fence about, but not sure if I want to buy them now seeing as there are no promos I am interested in. As for double points, I am waiting for the Halloween set to appear on shop.lego.com to buy that and maybe something else to get the free shipping as I cannot make it to my local LEGO store right now.

You are entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't mean your opinion is not superficial and selfish, or that the way you phrase it (like calling any designs you don't like "phoned-in" regardless of their complexity or uniqueness) is not insulting. Insults to designers, especially those that imply they don't care about or put effort into their designs, have long been a pet peeve of mine and apparently a habit of yours.

You have every right to dislike certain sets; just try a little harder not to be a jerk about it and act as if anything you don't like means LEGO isn't trying. Sometimes LEGO has to make decisions on behalf of people other than you. Re-releasing a widely beloved set that many fans missed out on seems like one of those kinds of decisions. So is making their holiday gift set a charming mini-model instead of a minifig-scale seasonal vignette exactly like the ones they've been releasing all year.

In fact, if you weren't so committed to the narrative that LEGO cares less and less each year, instead of seeing it as "LEGO is cheating us out of the minifig-scale vignettes we've loved getting each year", you could easily see it as "LEGO knows how much we love minifig-scale vignettes, so this year they're doing them as regular $10 seasonal sets year-round instead of super-limited 'gifts' you have to pay huge sums of money on specific dates to get."

And no, I'm not just looking for an excuse to jump on your comments. It didn't even register with me that so many of the posts like that I read here are even by the same person, though it makes sense hearing it now. To be honest, it's a relief to realize that so much of the negativity I encounter on the Brickset forums is actually just the work of one person!

You make some good points; I could be less critical. I also think you knew very well who you were responding to.
I am also not the only one that has been less than positive toward recent LEGO decisions. However, I do not see you quoting and responding to anyone else's negative comments in the forum as being as' petty, shameful, and disgrace to the AFOL community'. So I presume that ire, and personal attack, is aimed at me. That also appears to be some nasty comments from someone that ironically is trying to get me and others to look at what LEGO is doing in a more positive light instead of what else it could appear as.

Finally, I can agree to disagree here, as it is what it is, and let things lay. Different people see things differently. However, when someone starts saying I or others comments are 'petty, shameful, and disgrace to the AFOL community', I take exception to that. Who are you to question someone else's value to a discussion, their opinion or how they voice it?
Mean spirited is mean spirited even if trying to 'right a wrong' that you see.
If you think I'm wrong, then fine I can live with that, tell me I'm wrong, tell me you think I'm totally off base and why I am, fine. However, I think the general implication that I must be a disgrace to a community because you do not like my comment is flat out wrong and irresponsible.

I really like this set, it's really cute! I do feel like $99 is a little high, but that's only because I'm used to spending less to get a free set. I will definitely be purchasing the new Christmas set, so I will wait and get this with it! :)
